Georgetown, if only you werent so difficult to get to. Despite having lived in DC for over a year, my husband and I had only visited once (and it was a whole summer ago!). We knew we had to return for our last date night in the city and end on the most amazing meal one can find - 1789 was the perfect choice. The restaurant/dining room was tastefully kept/decorated and beyond gorgeous. husband and I were welcomed by their customized menu (appropriately titled "Happy Anniversary") and best table in the house. Almost every table was celebrating some type of special occasions and every one was dressed in his/her finest, fancy suit/gown. The clienteles were definitely a bit older than my husband and me - nevertheless we didnt feel treated any differently. Best kept secret: While most restaurants in DC are preparing for another round of restaurant week, 1789 is currently offering a summer special (Not listed on the menu or mentioned by our server) - $48 for three courses (any item off the menu - surcharge for rack of lamb). The options were endless. All descriptions were drool inducing. By simply tasting their complimentary house made bread basket, we knew we couldnt go wrong with any item off the menu. Squid ink pasta, red snapper, berries and cream - I was pleasantly surprised by the generous serving of my first course. Im a big eater but was already full from the pasta alone (maybe I went too hard on the bread). This bowl of pasta was pure perfection - every component was beyond lick the bowl worthy. Not only was the fish beautifully pan seared and cooked, it was genius-ly paired with smokey bacon and fresh steamed clams - every bite was a pure bliss moment of its own. Berries and cream was a deconstructed version of lemon ricotta cheesecake. Light and zesty - the perfect ending treat. Pork belly + octopus, Icelandic cod, almond cream brûlée - my husband ate every bits of his three courses... and he claimed that he wasnt hungry coming in. He wanted me to make sure to let everyone know that his cream brûlée was the best dessert hes had to date. 30 years of desserts - 1789s wins. Overall - the finest food, the finest service - Would be more than happy to return even without the summer special!

This review is for bar downstairs The tombs, not the dinning room 1789. This is a great place. Its full of Georgetown college kids, so make sure youre wearing your "Father son and Hoya spirit" tee-shirt, or have a your Georgetown chaperone with you. Trivia night there is amazing, look for Georgetown caliber questions like: "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?" If you have a bunch of extended friends and want a good place to get drunk together then this is the place. You have the added benefit of getting really loud and making all those crusty old republicans angry in 1789, the five star dining room upstairs. Truth be told there is nothing like a good college bar, and this is among the best. Dont be surprised to see future members of congress here, and current members of congress upstairs. A note for those under 21. Tombs does not need your business; that being said dont try to pass a fake ID there. They are always full with people who are of age and wont hesitate to confiscate your ID if your not. This is also a good place to see the Georgetown basketball team after a game. I am always impressed by the students, and how they leave their players alone and dont pester them with questions for pictures and autographs.

Situated in a rowhouse in Georgetown, 1789 serves amazingly well-prepared and Washingtonian-like elegant food. Foie gras torchon brûlée is served with barrel-aged maple syrup and kumquat marmalade. Lamb shoulder, squab, and a pork duo are some of the favorite entrees. The lamb is slow roasted in herb butter and the squab is roasted with hazelnut brioche stuffing. Both the lamb and pork are from local farms. The restaurant also offers a "taste of white truffle" over hand-cut tagliatelle in truffled butter sauce as well as beef carpaccio with hazelnuts. 1789 also has its share of seafood, such as cod, snapper, salmon, and scallops. Classy and upscale, 1789 is one of the best restaurants in DC. High-quality food from local farms, this Georgetown institution gives off an Old World ambiance and vibe. If you are ever in Georgetown, I highly recommend this restaurant.

As a DC staple its hard to put down the atmosphere, as DC is generally an overly conservative city as it is. Other than the atmosphere, that really only my late grandfather, would enjoy, theres nothing thats just average about the place. Service is some of the best. The wait staff know what theyre talking about without ( and without the pretentiousness ). The food is always of the utmost, best quality. I heard that the chef from Restaurant Eve, Beauchamp took this place over and I was worried what it might do, but hes only made the place better than it already was. I think about the Lamb that they make there almost monthly... its been hard to say that Ive had the best of something anywhere in DC, but 1789 has the best lamb that Ive ever had the pleasure of eating. (and Ive tried a lot of places).

The food was OK at best, certainly not worth the price. The waitstaff tried, but failed (nice enough guy but forgot our wine and was inattentive). They try to make the atmosphere intimate but really we felt like we were sitting on top of the other dinners. Someone was photographing the food at a nearby table during our anniversary meal; so there was a spotlight shinning in our faces during our entire dinner. When they finally finished and started packing up their equipment, one of the workers was bent over putting away the camera, etc. and stuck her butt right in our faces for at least five minutes. For the price I expect much more.

I wronged the staff of this restaurant terribly one day. The dining room manager, Abdul, chased my friends and I several blocks down the street in a VERY expensive suit on a hot day in order to right a wrong that his staff didnt even commit. Ive since called the restaurant to apologize and to own up to what Ive done, but Abduls kindness, professionalism, pride, and devotion to his duties as a manager at 1789 have left an impression on me that will likely last forever. Thank you for your kindness, and know that the actions youve taken not only ensure the future of your business, but also reflect decency and humanity at their best.

The atmosphere and staff are wonderful but this was a relatively underwhelming dining experience. Granted we have a pretty high level of expectation given the amount of incredible places we have been in Chicago, the food was disappointingly our least favorite part. I ordered the steak, which was cooked very well and compared to say Mortons, Smith & Wollenksys, or The Palm you pretty much get a good steak. However my gf ordered the salmon, which was dry and pretty plain. I would definitely revisit this historical and charming restaurant but would not reccomend the cuisine at such an extravangant cost.

Service began attentive but deteriorated badly toward the end of the meal. A meal that took 2 hours to finish an appetizer, entree and dessert. Entree portion sizes are tiny and take 1 hour to arrive at the table, but were very tasty. The atmosphere is cozy but stuffy (both in the temperature sense, and snobby sense). Only 1 small bathroom shared with the restaurant next door (and nearly requires a map to find). Valet parking was quick and free. There are better dining options in or near Georgetown.
