Neighborhood mom-and-pop Hunan Chinese food restaurant filled with Chinese speaking Mandarin. Came here for lunch on a Friday and this small place was packed. You dont come here for the atmosphere, but for the generous portions of Hunan home-style cooking. Service was really friendly and prompt. Had two of the lunch specials served in bamboo dim sum baskets ($7.50/ea) that start with egg drop soup, an egg roll with the meal and end with slices of fresh fruit (orange and watermelon) for dessert: Shredded Pork with lots of Bell Peppers in Garlic Sauce on white rice and big meaty Hunan Prawns with lots of broccoli flowerettes on white rice. Both had enough spice to give it a nice kick, but not overwhelmingly spicy hot. Really like the fresh, crunchy (not from a can) bamboo. We also ordered the Hunan Special Combination Chow Mein and the 8 piece Xiao Long Bao dumplings ($5.95). Egg rolls were okay, not crispy skin, but a little soggy. The thickness of the XLB was a little thick for me, but overall flavorful taste, broth in dumpling, and the quantity make up for the dumpling skins thickness. It was good, just not earth shattering great! Noodles were thick, wheat, like the size of udon noodles. There wasnt much of a combination. Two shrimp, some slices of chicken, some fish, no meat, no veggie, a slice or two of green onions. A little oily, not spicy at all. Wouldnt order it again. Couldnt finish our "basket" meals so we did bring home leftovers for lunch the next day (which the Hunan flavors permeated over night and tasted even better the next day). Closed on Tuesdays. Street parking is 2 hrs and free. Would return and try out the 3 dishes for $23 Special next time.

Outstanding chef who has mastered an extensive repetoire of Cantonese, Hunan, Mandarin and Sechwan dishes. Crowded and small venue that is absolutely worth suffering for the delights of his culinary genius! Take out is a fine option. The portions are huge, so dont over order. Finest chef in central part of San Francisco peninsula by any measure. Outstanding: mongolian beef, eggplant, hot and sour soup with wanton, Walnut prawns, sizzling rice soup, salt and pepper fried fish, etc. Have never had a dish that was less than 4 stars and almost all are 5 .. Amazing bargain to boot—prices are at the low end for the peninsula. He deserves a better venue in which to serve his miraculous fare!!.

Real Chinese food that tastes great and at a reasonable price. Menu items listed in Chinese first and then followed by English descriptions. Lunch specials are a great bargain. Pot of tea served as soon as you are seated. I was served way too much food but I managed to eat it all. Free 2 hour parking on the street in front of restaurant. Eat in, take out or delivery available.

This place is amazing ! Very fast and friendly service, and the food are both flavorful and big portion, really good value for money. Im a Szechuanese and really enjoyed the Hunan twist that the restaurant put to some Szechuanese classics. The only downside is that theyre too popular, there always seem to be a wait. Ill be back to try the noodles and buns.

Best string beans with chicken. While most restaurants use tasty but chewy, fatty thigh meat, this kitchen stir fries thinly sliced marinated breast meat for great flavor. Very generous portions. Dont order the Cantonese noodles. Mandarin is the specialty here.

Small mom & pop style restaurant, decor and ambience are very down to earth and the food is oh-so-good. We were here with a party of six and had a lot of different dishes that were all served quickly, and everything tasted great.

The place serves up many of Maos favourite dishes. Tried the house peanut butter and pork spicy noodle soup and the spicy Mao special noodle soup, both were good. Would come back.

Great authentic hole in the wall for Chinese, numbing chilis, Shanghai noodles, pork belly, pan fried dumplings, and garlic pea sprouts are some favorites. Cash and card friendly.

Decent traditional Chinese. I didnt love the soup, but the preserved cabbage with pork and rice cakes is worth the trip, a wonderfully balanced dish thats not spicy.

Great neighborhood restaurant for classic Chinese dishes. I love the food and atmosphere. Some of the dishes are a bit too salty, but the flavors are excellent.
