*3.5 stars* Honestly, ANY other burger establishment wouldve been a welcome replacement to the horrific cesspool that was Burger Joint, so the bar was set pretty damn low for this restaurant space. Upon hearing that Umami Burger was coming in, I must admit that I did groan a little bit -- I tried the original Los Angeles location a few years ago and wasnt impressed at all. But still, much better than Burger Joint -- and since its so close to where I live, I decided to give it another shot. Im still disappointed with the size of the burgers here -- I mean, cmon, WHO gets full off of these?! Our table actually ordered extra burgers just so we could be full (resulting in a pretty steep final bill), so for the price, one burger is just way too tiny. Best of the bunch: The Manly Burger. Oh man, everything about this burger was excellent -- the crunch from the toasted bun, the tenderness of the meat, the gooey melted cheese, and the F**KING LARD!! I would get this again in a heartbeat... that is, if my heart doesnt stop beating after eating this calorie-stuffed monster. The rest of the burgers were just okay -- the Umami Burger was bland, the Truffle Burger just tasted like truffle oil (which I guess is accurate naming, but not really inventive or special in any way). The truffle fries were good; the fried pickles were meh. Finished off with a pecan pie, which tasted like it was bought in the bakery section of the Safeway next door. Service was awesome, though. Umami Burger is definitely a VAST improvement over the Burger Joint that was here before, but theres just so much more they can do to make it awesome. Since its a franchise, probably nothing will ever be done though. However, Ill surely be coming back for that Manly Burger (or two, since one is SO DAMN TINY).

I came here with a few friends to grab a bite to eat before catching the Caltrain Friday evening. My overall take is that the food was absolutely delicious as always but the service at this location was a little less than what I expected. When we first arrived, it took a bit of time to just get seated because the staff seemed pretty disorganized. There were a few mishaps along the way to order including a drink mixup and a long delay before got our menus, but we finally got our food. Once the food arrived, all of our misgivings were wiped away because the burgers were absolutely delicious. Well cooked, properly seasoned and with just the right amount of spice to make a completely amazing meal (the truffle fries were a great side!) What left a bad taste in our mouth was just the closing service was so slow. It took forever to close out our bill and we actually had to walk up to get it handled. By the time we had finally closed out, we had missed our train by a process that seemingly could have been accomplished much faster. It did seem busy but it still didnt feel quite right.

This spot used to be occupied by "The Burger Joint", a pretty conventional hamburger place. Usually busy, always pretty good. Today, we stopped by on our way from the train station to AT&T park, and it was totally dead despite the crowds surging past on the street. That should have been our sign to leave and try something else, but we foolishly stuck around. Its now a sit-down waiter service place, and the prices are jacked up accordingly. Service was pretty quick, but there was almost nobody else in there. Our "medium rare" burgers were closer to raw on the inside. They didnt have a printed kids menu, but the waiter offered a "kids burger" and a "grilled cheese". The latter turned out to be a hamburger bun turned inside out with about about a 1/2 cup of cheese sauce poured over the lower half. It had clearly never been in contact with a grill. Our grilled-cheese-loving toddler hardly touched it.

Ive been here when it was and was not busy. Both times, Ive received some really good and accommodating service. Last time, my friend had a dog with us. I asked for patio seating and they offered the dog water as well. I was definitely a fan when they were dog friendly. I ordered truffle fries to start and it was cheesy and delicious. I had the sunny side burger since I was craving eggs and wanted a brunch like burger. It came out beautifully and tasted good. My friend is a fan of the ahi tuna sandwich. Be sure to get the wasabi spread on the side if youre not if youre going to be a fan. Ive suggested that to her because it could be overwhelming. They checked on us often and the dog was happy napping on my foot under the table after his thirst was quench. Its a good eat spot if youre around att park for an event, game or sightseeing.

Unlike the other Umami Burger on Union St, this one actually has an adequate number of seats, which means there is less of a horrendously-long line. The shop is also a lot brighter lit and resembles more of a Smash Burger, but with premium burgers. Their burgers are quite pricey considering their tiny size. Eating just 1 will leave you hungry, while eating 2 might be a bit too much. I recommend splitting 3 between 2 people. Among their burgers, the Umami, with its delicious sweet teriyaki sauce, is my favorite. I actually didnt find anything particularly extraordinary about any of the other burgers, so its kind of a 1-hit wonder shop. Nonetheless, service was good, and I liked the cleanliness, which is a rarity in this city.

I love Umami Burger typically, but not this location. The staff, particularly the bartender, was extremely rude and disrespectful for no particukar reason. I went in and ordered takeout. I waited over 40mins while they placed other orders and served guests who came in after me. When I politely asked how much longer for my food, he walked away without letting me finish then returned with a bag. The food was overcooked and cold, i.e not edible after all that. I could also see orders being filled from where I sat at the bar. No one in the kitchen wore gloves (I assume this is required, but I could be wrong), and their hands were definitly all over every burger.

Ordering from this restaurant is very hard.
Heres my experience:
First time there were more waiters than customers, and we still waited some 15 minutes for them to bring the menu and the check. the waiters come to you without a menu first, and they have to go and get it later.
It took 29 minutes to get the burger. I clocked it.
Second time I called in to pre-order and save myself half an hour.
Ring ring ring ring... no answer.
Second call: ring ring ring ring Hi this is umami burger how can I help you?
- I want to order a burger please
- Ok ill put you on a brief hold.

Delicious burgers and good wine/beer selection for pairing! The throwback has two patties and was delicious. Simply done perfectly, juicy and tender. Onion rings are plenty and a great side to any burger. The truffle burger is really heavy on the truffle, as are the truffle fries, which are also a good side. Both of them are delicious, but I would highly suggest getting one or the other, and not both as the truffle gets to be overpowering. There is outside seating as well as a happy hour special on food and drinks that end at 6pm, which makes this a great place to meet friends before a Giants game.
