Ive walked by Southpaw at least a few hundred times, but I think Ive only been there once before. I recently went back again with a few friends, and I was amazed at the service and food. Wish I had thrown Southpaw into my regular rotation earlier! Pretty full on a Saturday night, but we were lucky to get seats at the packed bar and then eventually seated at a table. We ordered a few drinks while we waited. The Southpaw iced tea was really good - sweet but strong. The What What was also good and well balanced with a spicy hint of jalapeno, but didnt taste as strong. Lots of great options for paleo, primal, & gluten-free foodies. I really enjoyed the smoked beef brisket (they offer lean, medium fatty, and fatty cuts) with sweet potatoes (no molasses/sugar added). Also tried the fried pickles with aoli, which were good, but a little too breaded for my taste. The hush puppies were also really good! Service was super friendly and atmosphere was casual and bustling. I cant wait to come back and try their other BBQ dishes!

Went here on a Saturday night on somewhat short notice with another couple. The four of us got some beers they brew here, some cocktails, got a table, got some food (I had the brisket), they brought out the sauces, we got more beers, we tried the fried pickles, and we had a great time. And the food was excellent, and filling, and just how I want barbeque to be, and the beer list is awesome as well, and the beers they brewed there were a little weird, maybe? But it could have been a weird batch, or maybe they just arent entirely to my liking, but this place we definitely to my liking. I think the waitress was a little slammed, so Im giving them a "very good", but if I go back and its better, Id totally change that. Im really glad we went to this place, is all Im saying.

Being a Southerner who deeply cares for the quality of my BBQ, whether Cajun, Texas, Carolina or any other style, I was surprised to find this place nestled in the middle of the Mission District. My hopes werent TOO high but it was a delightful and warm atmosphere. The meal was filling even with a decent human-sized portion and incredibly flavorful. They do a proper Carolina BBQ Brisket Sandwich with the slaw served on top of your heaping pile of Brisket and a healthy pile of pickles on the side (be sure to add them to your coleslaw for maximum Carolina BBQ effect). The service was friendly and warm and really helpful in deciding which one of their BBQ delicacies to enjoy!

They have a good range of whiskey and have some interesting names for cocktails. I liked the Prohibition Sweet Tea. Not too sweet and light on the booze so I could enjoy my hearty ribs meal. The ribs were good and are a sizeable portion that you can easily share with another friend. You can try them with different sauces that are on the table. My favorite was the Baton Rouge Gumbo, which was really, really good and plated to us first. Be sure to finish your gumbo quickly to make space for the ribs though. I think we kept our friends waiting since we were taking our time with the gumbo.

Outstanding food. I sampled all the following and were all delicious: goat, pulled pork, ribs, chicken, fried pickles, Mac and cheese, potato salad and grits. Everything was cooked perfect and extremely flavorful. Good sauces too. I have had pulled pork from countless places and this ranked towards the top with the best. Loved their potato salad too which was not like most mayo-based and was great. I will go back and is my BBQ recommendation spot in The City from here on out. Cool and great signature cocktails too. Great atmosphere, great staff and great BBQ ... How can you go wrong?

Great options for meat eater and veggie/vegan folks. The smoked jackfruit sandwich and mustard potato salad were my favorites. The saddest part of the whole experience was what they call cornbread. Ive never had such a poor excuse for such. Light, fluffy, practically all wheat flour (seriously couldt tell if there was cornmeal in it) and super bland. All the other options are so great how could a southern restaurant fall down when it comes to cornbread!?!? Big letdown on that note but great otherwise.

Had a pretty good time here tonight with friends. Most of us just had drinks but one friend got the heir loom tomatoes which came with apple smoked bacon, greens and bread - kinda like a deconstructed BLT as the bartender accurately described it. The wines were good and the beer selection worked. A bummer was that one of my friends couldnt get the sour ale that we had when we celebrated the fact that I got my first legit job after I got to the bay. Yay!

Went here at just about 5, when they open. The decor is similar to a lot of hip new restaurants in SF, unfinished wood and metal. Also noticeable, a large beer brewing setup. I got a Tom Haverford cocktail, which tasted like a root beer with sangria; strange enough mix that Im not sure how I feel about it yet. The whiskey brined chicken is great; definitely eat it with the sauce. They have a variety of other sauces on the table; the "hot" one was the best.

Food was just awful. The chef looked like a mix of Homer Simpson and that guy from mythbusters. I watched him berate the kitchen whilst they put out plates that were undercooked, over salted and just nasty. The owner was this horrible excuse for a southern belle as she was just negative, mean, and just money oriented, no wonder I didnt notice a wedding band, I mean... Who would choose to spend time with that?! =never go here

Had little expectations, but was blown away. Amazing bbq experience . Everything was delicious, the server was super good and exceeded all expectations and there was zero Sf snooty asshattery some of these other places have. The brisket was out of control and we had to order 2 of the grit cakes after our meal. Pro tip: skip the date nite appetizer and focus on the mains. Thats where the magic happens.

This place is awesome! Stellar BBQ that fulfilled my craving immediately. I would recommend the "dinosaur" bone if youre ready for a ton of meat. It was delicious and enormous. I wasnt thrilled with their selection of sides but with that much meat I was ok without them. Our server was nice but she seemed a little distracted. I would definitely go back. Great location in the mission.

This has become so frequent in our rotation that when my usual dining partner #michaelbrown goes on his own, they ask what Im up to. They make the best mason-jar sized cocktails and the sauces are perfection! Ive not had anything there that I would not recommend. They have a killer happy hour as well, and you can catch local sports on the TVs at the bar.

Cannot rate this place highly enough. Service was incredible (friendly, efficient and funny), drinks were spot on (and plentiful), BBQ food was truly amazing (and I am a BBQ food snob). Zack and Benjamin were legends and clearly love what they do. My first dining experience in San Francisco will probably not be beaten. I will be back (maybe this week).

I love a hush puppy! so rare to come by. My ribs were excellent and so was the brie mac n cheese. Theres several different sauces to coat your meat in. The collard greens were a bit too salty/vinegary. I would not recommend it. but for $20 you can get a decent size rack of ribs, two hush puppies, and 2 sides of your choice. The full bar is great too!
