Relive your school lunch room experiences from the 70s. Stick with the specials, they at least taste somewhat like they should. The servings are tiny, but the taste is about right. The salsa that comes with the chips and salsa has an orange colored pizza sauce base. Its very reminiscent of the pizza sauce that came in the tiny cans used by kids to make their own pizzas. The carne asada burrito was, well, carne. The burrito comes with no sauce on top which might lead you to expect that the meat inside is delicious, and shouldnt be smothered in a sauce. The meat inside is not marinated as carne asada should be. Its simply browned steak meat. The final indignity lies in the canned black olives that lay on top of the guacamole that tops the burrito. The spainsh rice inside the burrito is the consistency your school nutritionist might have slapped onto your tray in the 4th grade. Finally, the top it all off, our particular waiter was surly in the extreme. Youd be best advised to save your money for something better.

Are you kidding me, this is the go-to spot whenever I want a yummy, greasy Mexican food fix! The decor is CRAZY, my male friends love to go in and see the gorgeous young/old? actresses from the 20s and 30s on the wall there and all of the other colorful stuff. The seats have names on them! (Unfortunately, I couldnt find mine). The food is AMAZING! I always order a cheese enchilada (Their spinach enchiladas are good, too) with extra tortillas on the side. Waitstaff is always friendly and sweet, service usually good, but sometimes can be a bit iffy (Once I asked for the tortillas on the side and they never came!) But besides that one time everything has been fantastic! Much cheaper than Fresca a few doors down, less high class, but more comfort. I adore El Toreador! (Hey, that rhymes! Well, kinda.)

No one looking for authentic mexican should go here. Unless you need bland mexican food, go elsewhere. Ive been here a number of times and have given them chance after chance when the food wasnt that great. Thats over now. Went and had lunch with my husband this weekend; we both ordered the taco/tosada plate, a margarita, and guacamole. the only good thing was the guac. the margarita was WEAK and small. the food was entirely flavorless; no seasoning to the chicken on the tostada to differentiate it in any way from the other flavorless ingredients. it was all bland. I grew up mexican in san antonio and this place shouldnt call itself mexican food. good if all you want is bottled beer and guacamole. eat elsewhere i recommend celias by the beach on judah

I love Mexican food! For West Portal...this is really good Mexican food. For California...its alright. I had the Chile Colorado from here and it was really tasty. The next time I came I had the nachos...they were just alright. I love nachos. I think Im obsessed with nachos. Everywhere I go, if there are nachos on the menu, I want to eat them. I should just review nachos. I just might... Back to the restaurant. The decor is awesome and the staff are super friendly. I typically get my food to go and eat it next door at McCarthys (used to be Joxey Dalys) to get beer on draft and watch sports. I need to try more items but as for now Im still sad about the nachos. I cant help it. #GoogleCityExpert #SFCityExpert

I was really excited about how festive this place looked and their affordable margaritas, so when my family came in to town I decided to take them here. However, I was entirely offended by the masogynistic owner and staff who made rude, impatient remarks while we ordered and even made inappropriate jokes to the women at the table. This theme continued when I went to the bathroom and was apaulled by the numerous sexist posters hanging in the unisex bathroom. I wish I could say I enjoyed the food but it was average and after being forced to pay a $6.00 sharing fee and 11.00 for a taco, I somehow lost my appetite. Sucks to suck.

I say go for the Rositas soft tacos with avocado (my favorite) unless you think its not enough to satisfy your cravings. Or try the burritos; theyre big and tasty. Though, I wish the steak was shredded like they do in them fast food burrito places in the Mission (how dare I said that! lol). However, the meat quality is very good here so why bother shredding it. The decor is very vibrant and colorful, and it works! It doesnt look tacky, and thank goodness theres no voodoo doll hanging from the ceiling (imagine that lol). Try their horchata drink. Its so good!

Vegans steer clear! I typed in google, vegan restaurants near me and El Toreador popped up. My girlfriend and I were excited to try a new vegan restaurant while visiting San Francisco. When we sat down to look at the menu, they had only one vegan option which was a burrito which came with beans rice and mixed veggies, which was fine with us. It took almost 25 minutes to be served, the burrito was bland and had no seasonings whatsoever. When we wanted to get our check and leave, the staff was more concerned with being on their phones and watching tv.

Great cal-mex "mushy bean" restaurant, as my GF calls it. Very friendly service, great selections and fantastic sangria. Im not much of a sangria drinker, but do yourself a favor and order a pitcher of the red sangria. They dont take reservations and it can get a bit crowded at peak times; put your name on the list and note that youll be in the "bar" which is a sports bar next door. They will come and find you when your table is ready. Or just hang outside if the weather is nice. Love the West Portal laid-back vibe, too.
