The short and sweet: Ambiance: 2 stars Service: 3 stars Food: 0 stars The Cricket is one of those independent restaurants that established themselves in the neighborhood at least two generations ago, and they pretty much seem to be resting on their laurels ever since. When you first enter the building located on Auburn Blvd just past Myrtle, the first thing that hits you is the sheer volume of bric-a-brac lining the walls throughout the place. There is a large Lon Chaney type of character by the register, a mannequin wearing a prom dress, there are random license plates, weird lumber tools, a working toy train chugging along the elevated track, dolls heads, random bible quotes, etc. There is so much stuff lying around the place that Im sure the producers of "Hoarders" is soon going to make contact. But, whatever, thats their thing. Its cool. The wait staff is very friendly. They like to talk to you and call you darlin and sweetheart. They really project the down-home country demeanor. Thats fine. The truth is, I dont think that I am the normal demographic for a place like this. I dont care about all the curiosities hanging from the walls and ceiling, I dont have any interest in the "Sweeties" and "Dear Hearts." I dont mind, but I dont care, if you get my drift. What I care about when I enter a place such as this is the food. I want great-tasting, totally-off-the-diet, youre-going-to-have-to-take-a-five-mile-jog-to-work-this-meal-off, kind of food. Well, I suppose it was half of what I wanted. The caloric count was definitely high, no doubt. I ordered the "Special K," which is primarily scrambled eggs, ham, and fried potatoes covered in gravy. I admit I read the description incorrectly, and I didnt realize what it was. My bad. Nonetheless, the gravy (the most prominent thing on the plate) was quite obviously prepared hours before, if not the day before. It was not fresh, nor was it hot. It was tepid and tasted slightly of Elmers Glue. My eldest son ordered "Grandmas Old Fashioned French Toast." My youngest son ordered a Belgian waffle breakfast combo with sunny-side-up eggs and bacon. I tasted the eldest sons French toast that consisted of three thick slices of raisin bread, heavily coated in so much egg wash that there were floppy bits of egg stuck to the edges of the toast. The bread was stale, pure and simple. The syrup reminded me of the cheap "welfare syrup" my mother used to make with a pot of hot sugar water and a tablespoon of imitation maple extract. It was thin, and virtuously flavorless, aside from the sugar. YUCK! I didnt sample the other sons food, as it looked pretty standard. I suppose I should have tasted the bacon, but Id had enough. Maybe I came on a bad day, but I rather doubt it. Perhaps this is just the wrong atmosphere for me. The place is constantly packed with locals and regular patrons, so they obviously offer something that people want. I would assume that the commercial success has to do with the sheer volume of food piled on your plate when it reaches the table. However, I personally prefer a meal of quality versus quantity and, in this facet, Crickets does not deliver. Oh, and by the way, they are not cheap. Easily $10 per person.

Breakfast is definitely decent. Nothing that jumps out at me but the sausage links they use are better than most. Lunch wasnt worth the trip. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich on sourdough with garlic fries (upgrade). It was a very bland sandwich with over greased bread, the garlic fries were regular fries with a little bit of sauteed garlic dumped on top...not worth the upgrade. My lunch partner got a very large salad with chicken. She complained the chicken was dry. Quaint diner atmosphere with a mldel train that does laps over head. Id go back for breakfast if I didnt feel like driving to Auburn Folsom or the Delta.

A group of us from a former job at Senior Gleaners, a food bank distribution center in Sacramento which after 35+ years was taken over and shut down (by another large Food Bank in Sacramento), get together every other month here for lunch. They have ALWAYS been very gracious and welcoming to us here. And the food is superb for the value. Hint, try the Reuben and/or any of the various specials they have going on. And you cant beat the kitsch of the place. I mean come on, they have an overhead Railroad going around the room & wall of Clowns!

Friendly waitresses, always feel welcome the food has always been hot when it came to the table. Even my first visit was nice it did take me back by surprise at how small it looked outside but it didnt feel to small once I went in. I simply love the biscuits and gravy which is saying a lot because Im not a gravy person at all. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak with the biscuits and gravy I tried it out of curiosity and I really liked it. This is a great breakfast place and lunch Im just sad it closes at 3pm.

This is good old-fashioned Americana. The chicken-fried steak sandwich is great. They make the best sausage gravy on this side of town. The decor is early-american junkyard. They have a model train that runs on a track suspended from the ceiling. If youre over 510" youll have to duck to walk in the front door. And all the wait staff will call you "Hon." If youre looking for haute cuisine, this is definitely not your place. If you want good home-cooked food, youll love Crickets!

I came here because a lot of the reviews said the biscuits and gravy were the best. I ordered the fajita omelette and biscuit and gravy. I expected the gravy to be piping hot but it came out lukewarm. Also my fajita omlette had chunks of chicken, onion, and bell pepper. Im talking about huge chunks. The chicken was very good, tender and seasoned nicely, but other then that, nothing special. First time and I most likely wont be going back.

I knew it was going to be a great experience when I opened the front door and saw the place almost packed at 9am on a Saturday! It was such a nice place to eat. The service was fast friendly and the food was fantastic! Ask for Fanky... She was terrific and as we ordered the BFF CFS (Best Friends Forever Chicken Fried Steak) my brother and I have a new BFF! Great place for Families with kids! Highly Recommended.

Go for the kitsch (and the story behind it that takes up a whole page of the menu), stay for the delish food. The country gravy is amazing and can smother almost any dish, the pancakes were light and fluffy, the potatoes soft but not greasy. Gonna hafta make this a regular breakfast spot!

I have eaten here twice and while the first time was decent the second time was pretty terrible. On my first visit I had the hash which was average. On my second visit I ordered the chicken fried steak. It was pre-made, not in house, and was tiny. It was covered in a flavorless gravy.

If you see a full parking lot... good sign. Popular place with mostly positive reviews. Fresh tasty breakfast, brunch and lunch combinations give you a variety of options. Early Sundays is busy but after 10 can be crowded. Banana pancakes with sausage and eggs were just delicious.
