If you like a quiet meal, which granted, is hard to find these days, Black Bear is not for you! Our visit (four seniors) was around 4:30 pm on a Wednesday evening, so our miserable experience wasnt due to the bears being too busy. We were given their strange "newspaper" menus fairly promptly, but from then on it was poke, poke, poke. I was about to go ask someone where our dinners were after a ridiculously long wait of about twenty minutes. The music inflicted upon us was outrageous! We asked that they turn it down, and although they claimed that they did, I doubted it. The $%#A@&!! music was awful and ruined our dining experience. I told who I thought was the shift manager that they should advertise that they are a concert as much as a restaurant so that people would know. He told me that it was turned down as low as they were allowed. I told him that they play that din for the help, certainly not the customers. He didnt care. Finally, my fried chicken dinner was served. It was overcooked, over breaded, and hard as could be. The mashed potatoes and gravy tasted Ok, but the texture of the stuff told me that they sat on the plate for a long time waiting for the chicken to be done. I was told that Black Bear was a noisy place to eat and have avoided it for years - this was my first visit ever. And it was definitely my last and only meal at Black Bear. Never again!

First time ever going here. I got a little confused with the turn into this place so I ended up making a U-turn. Two left turning lanes looked like they were to join 99 North. In reality the left lane furthest from the median allows you to turn on to the road parallel to the highway. My inability to read road signs aside. This place is great, a little dim on the inside even at lunch time. But the food is decently priced, the portions are modest, and its really good comfort food. I got a reuben with their parmesan kettle chips, and was a little disappointed in the limited amount of sauerkraut. The acidity of which normally heightens the flavors of the corned beef. However, the kettle chips were amazing, not too salty, great amount of shredded cheese. My only critique on these would be that some of them were still raw, almost as if they were blanched and never fried. What stops me from giving this place three stars is that there chocolate creme pie is amazing. The crust is solid, not soggy. The filing is dense, chocolatey but not overwhelmingly so, and the whipped topping is really nice and airy.

I went there for a simple spinach eggs benedict & when they brought it to me, it was completely a soggy mess (gross). So I asked if they could just bring me a non buttered english muffin, I mean this is no joke 3 times they brought it over flooded with butter & bread soggy. So finally after waiting 3D minutes for toast I asked for a manager told her what happened gave her one more opportunity to redeem themselves & said I just want an English muffin without butter shes says ok, when it comes its saturated with butter my spinach, eggs & my husbands been done by this time with his food. I just cant believe they cant get something so simple as toast without butter right & they just didnt care. I WILL NEVER GIVE THEM ANOTHER CHANCE ON TOP OF EVERYTHING THE MANAGER COULDNT EVEN GET IT RIGHT WAITING FOR AN HOUR FOR TOAST IS RIDICULOUS!!

There were no motel or hotel rooms available in Modesto, Soccer Tournament had swamped the town. Had to stay over night in Manteca. Upon waking we tried the Black Bear Dinner, it was an early September Saturday, and the parking lot was almost full. The wait time was excessive, but once seated we had good hot coffee served almost immediately. It was my first time in a Black Bear Restaurant, and I was impressed with how busy they were and our waiter was good. Took orders, explained several of the meals that were new to our group. Food was as waiter described, and the kitchen had done a decent job, preparing our meals. Very busy location, all tables were full, and the conversation level was loud, to me it was normal for a crowded busy restaurant.

We eat all over this great country. Black bear is by far one of the best places to eat. They are economiceconomically great. Atmosphere and attitudes of staff are enjoyable and pleasant. The manager at Manteca, CA location was absolutely so nice and informative. She spoke to us and made us feel like we were the only people there.knowing they were full to capacity..Noone made you feel rushed or like you were a problem. ..I hope they expand Black Bear to the east coast. I would love to manage one for the company.....AWESOME PLACE TO JUST ENJOY PEOPLE AND FOOD...

Prepare to wait. We were told 20 minutes.. then 25 minutes later we inquired to our table and were told 20 minutes more. Why didnt they originally say 45 minutes you ask? The hostess told us shes unable to tell when people are going to leave. As our 45 minute wait is approaching what we would hope was the end. A different hostess asked us if we could split our party of 10 to 6 and 4 to be seated right away, otherwise it would be ANOTHER 20 minutes. Needless to say, we wasted our time waiting & never got to eat there. We left and well not be going back.

The prime rib was absolutely horrible. It was way over cooked and cut very very thin (about an 1/8"). I decided to give it a second chance and ordered a avocado burger this time I went there. When I got my burger , there was one thin slice of avacado. It was so skimpy that I started laughing out loud. The waitress asked me if things were ok. I showed her the tiny slice of avocado and said you got to be kidding me.... I will never go there again period! Stay away.

When I went to blackbear diner it was insanely busy and I opted to not wait forever for a table. Instead I snagged a pie and ate at home. Since then I have come back and have tried the blackberry and peach pie as well as the chocolate lava cake. Overall I am a decently big fan of the pies here though I do dislike not having a full crust on the dishes and just a pie crust top I still give them a solid recommendation.

Wonderful find on our way into Yosemite. The California cheeseburger I had was superb - one of the best burgers Ive ever had. Wife had a burger as well and liked hers. Shes gluten free and the gf bun she had was very good she reported. All around good attentive service. Will definitely be back when Im next in the area! The music was jukebox 50s and 60s - just fine for the place.

Unfortunately we hit the bathroom on the way out. Filthy restaurant, filthy bathroom. No paper towels, inside bathroom door handle was Sooooo dirty like they never clean it, hate to see what the kitchen looks like! Gross. Food was ok, service was unprofessional but ok. We have visited 4 different Black Bear diners in California, this one is the worst.
