20160628 visit. The food did not disappoint! We ordered $50 worth of take out. Two plates (1 half chicken, and 3 pieces), a kids meal 2 tenders, all the sides, plus jalapenos. They call it spicy chicken, but think of it as flavorful. Never had fried chicken this good. The crispy skin was very flavorful with even the breast being moist. It held up surprisingly well all the way home, and our family enjoyed all that was offered to us. We feel the default sides that come with the plate (baked beans and coleslaw) are the two best sides with potato salad closely behind. mac n cheese, fried okra, greens, and fries were good standard fare. They may have tasted better dine-in instead of carry out. Know that baked beans and greens have pork so it is not halal friendly. The staff is very friendly. Multiple staff interacted and played with my 3-year old, gave him Crayola crayons to color a chicken with. The order taker shared their favorite dishes and let me take my time to order. Once I ordered, she read the order back to me to confirm everything was correct. 15 minutes later, I got my food for carry-out. Everything was correctly placed with sides matched with the correct plate. Parking is limited, only for carry out, and you can only enter from the Crenshaw northbound side just past Pico. It is one lane and tight, so navigate carefully. If you plan to dine in, Bronson may be a good street to look for public parking. I think they should work with Fumis Tropical Fish & Pets which is on the other side of Pico and see if it can be used for evening diners. Im sure some free plates of chicken can grease the wheel!

Great fried chicken with a little kick! Louisiana hot sauce at the tables also, and honey too if you like to put some on your chicken (I know I do!) The taste of the chicken deserves 5 stars, but Im only going to give Guss 4 because I wasnt very impressed with the baked beans (a bit too sweet, sweet is good but not this much) and the mac & cheese (a bit on the clumpy side, not too creamy). I would have LOVED it if they would have had some corn bread, but nope, just slices of white sandwich bread (rolls would be much better if youre not going to be a fried chicken place that offers corn bread as a side). Man, warm rolls with butter would have hit the spot. Sandwich bread for this level of good chicken? Thats a disservice, frankly. I have no problem with the plastic silverware they bring you, but Styrofoam plates? We can do better (the chicken comes in pretty hot, I hate to think Im eating some of that Styrofoam as well!) I know it helps to keep the costs down, but I bet they can do cheap paper plates for about the same cost. Parking with about 10 spots for take-out only (though I only saw 2 people picking up orders when I left, so not sure whats up there). Recommend park on Crenshaw (no meters), Pico has meters. Youre probably wondered why I didnt give Guss less stars after reading the above - its the chicken man, its THAT good (everything around that chicken isnt all that great).

Everything is FROZEN far from FRESH. Not worth the price they charge. Mac & Cheese comes out of a frozen bag (ask the manager), so it is frozen literally 45 minutes before it gets to the table. Hence the bland taste they try to hide with paprika and a little cheese. Beans come in a can and are far from being fresh since staff is lax with first-in first-out standards. Sometimes they are extra thick, means they have likely been sitting in the oven for quite a while. Dont recommend getting beans in the morning for this reason, same goes for greens which also come frozen in a box. Fried Okra is usually very hard to chew, because of the product itself comes previously frozen. But also to add insult to injury they prep a lot of it before and simply re-drop it in the fryer. Chicken is ok, tenders are good. It would be better if oil was changed daily not weekly and the fryers were kept clean. Go to Howlin Rays or Kettle Corn for better chicken and better sides. If you want to eat fast food of fried chicken go to KFC or Popeyes, or since you are in koreatown find a nice korean fried chicken spot (KFC). At least they wont gauge your eyes out on cost for an entire menu that is far from fresh. F.o.r.m.e.r. E.m.p.l.o.y.e.e.

The fried chicken itself wasnt bad...spicy, crispy skin, juicy chicken inside. Skin was thin and crunchy, not a lot of flour coating with the texture most of us would be looking for when thinking fried chicken. The fried okra and macaroni was bland, needed salt. The part that was disappointing was our server. She was annoyed we asked for help when our drink spilled. Yes, it was our fault, but we needed assistance, and she couldnt be bothered. Then all the adults received their food, but our kids sat there waiting for theirs. All parents must agree that we need the kids taken care of before we could even begin to actually enjoy our food. Finally we needed containers to take the extras home. She gave us boxes that had a live fly in it. Wha??

Excellent food and the staff was super friendly. I live in Mid City and am happy to see a new restaurant in the area for casual dining. Guss has a little bit of everything and is the perfect place for a cheat meal! The chicken is tender and juicy with just enough spice and flavor. It wasnt too greasy and slimy like other fried chicken Ive had. The sides go perfectly with the chicken and there are plenty of items to choose from. And the pie! Homemade pies make me happy. The chocolate chess pie is a must. It was great to see the southern staples on the menu...sweet tea...greens....and fried okra. Yummy! Parking can take a minute so head west of Pico Blvd. at Crenshaw. Lots of metered parking on the north side of Pico.

The chicken is downright amazing here. The breasts are juicy, the wings, crispy. and the two piece combo is all served with white bread, baked beans and mac & cheese (default side is cole slaw & baked beans). The service was super great as well. As it is a new location, our waitress gave us a little history on Guss and where it originated. Drinks were always filled, and service was extra friendly. The only reason I didnt give 5 stars, is because this isnt the best fried chicken that Ive ever had. That crown goes to this little fried chicken spot that Ive found in Napa Valley. Dont get me wrong, Gus offers great food. You wont be disappointed.

Yes to fried chicken! I went here on a Tuesday and our group of 3 got a table right away. I saw lots of people getting takeout so maybe they do a lot more takeout business than dine in. I got the three piece dark and it came with two thighs and a leg. Tasty moist chicken with a tiny bit of kick to give the crispy outside something extra. Chicken was moist and tender. The default sides were beans and cole slaw. You can change the sides for a small charge. The service was fast and focused. My drink was always kept filled. The only thing I didnt particularly like was the chess pie. Ive found out that its not my favorite dessert.
