GREAT place. food 3.5 stars, service and local feeling 5 stars. Im from socal. And unfortunately, for any smaller city dining, usually the food is just a little less than what you expect in smaller towns. Nearly any 3 star place in SoCal will have similar taste. But, this place is one of the few good ones here in Grover Beach. Owners are gregarious and try to give you a nice experience. Waiters and waitresses are attentive. $1.99 hot sake special if you get a beer. I had the alaskan roll, and the ursla. Fish was decently fresh, but not tokyo fish market quality. I loved that this was the only packed sushi place we saw on a fri night. We went to a few recommended places around the area, saw no one inside, and so we ended up at this one. parking is easy, right out front, and we arrived at 8:30pm. people were still streaming in and saying hi to the owner.

Very good sushi, but the shape of the cut fish is a bit hard to handle and eat in one bite. I felt the fish was a bit over-sauced, like they either felt customers dont really like raw fish or they didnt trust the taste of their fish. Next time Ill stop them from saucing my sushi, didnt need it. Salmon skin hand roll (maybe not on menu?) the salmon was rather over-cooked. Had a blue fin toro roll (naked) that was one of the best sushi I have ever had. Tea was a bit weird, like honey had been added?

Steve is hands down the best sushi chef on the central coast. My motto when it comes to sushi is go big. Yamatos definitely delivers a consistent product that surpasses the quality and overall taste. Pro tip, I recommend you buy a bottle of soju, sit at the bar and offer Steve (the owner/sushi chef) shots (notice the plural) he will love you forever. I feel at home at yamatos.

Food is decent, service was not good and not what it used to be and over priced for what you get. We ordered appetizers and our rolls and beef/chicken Teriyaki Bowls came out first. So we cancelled the appetizer. Service was not friendly but not rude just blah. Ill stick to Yanagis where they are friendly, with great food and affordable.

For a sushi place, this is pretty meh. The prices are cheap, which is nice, but you get what you pay for. The sashimi is cut in a way that its difficult to bite into, so many of the rolls are fried, and there isnt too much variety. The place is pretty small inside but there is always a lively atmosphere.

This is my favorite Sushi bar on the central coast. The food is delicious, affordable, and very large proportions compared to others. The owner (Steve) is a cool dude and always remembers me when I come in. Give this place a try!

Ask for very little or sauce on the side. Last time I was there it was really disgusting when the rolls were floating in sauce. In the past the food was pretty good though. I would say its worth trying :) *brown rice available*

Just walked in and felt very welcomed. Sushi and saki were fantastic. Chicken Teriyaki had great flavor but too much rice and too little chicken. Expensive as any good sushi restaurant is but worth it. Ill return for sure.

Best sushi in Grover Beach! Small, but great atmosphere! Friendly staff and specialty rolls to die for:) The only reason Im not giving 5 stars is that they are a little slow and have a lot of turn around with servers.
