I went to this place twice and ordered the filter coffee both times. My friend broke her commitment to give up coffee just for the filter coffee because she absolutely loves filter coffee. However, I realized that the filter coffee they served us was actually just instant coffee!!! I was shocked because filter coffee is really not about simply mixing instant coffee powder and milk. It almost feels like cheating because I might want to suggest my friends who are not from India or have never tried the traditional filter coffee and all they get is instant coffee in the name of filter. I asked the server about it and he confirmed that they have been using instant coffee in the name of filter coffee lately because the owner wanted them to. I understand that preparing filter coffee takes time and energy but people really order that type of coffee and expect to get that you know! In my opinion, If they cant invest the time and resources involved in preparing filter coffee then they should simply say that they are serving instant coffee on the menu. The food is agreeable.

Where to begin... Ive only had the pleasure of Udupi once, but my was it spectacular. Heres what we got: South Indian Thali (exquisite), Special Vegetable Curry (wonderful), and Aloo Paratha (joyous). All of these dishes were recommended by our stupendous waiter, Crew. Really, Crew was the best part of the entire excursion. Just cute as a button, and extremely helpful, he made the entire meal a positively delightful experience. If you eat here, make sure to ask for him specifically, and tip him generously - we dont want to lose this wonderful young man!! AND WE DID NOT GET FOOD POISONING!!!!

This place has some great South Indian food at amazing prices, but the downside is there is usually a long wait to get a table here. I would try the Rasa vada, which is amazing (two fried lnetil donuts with tamarind juice and tomatoes) it has great spices and ingredients and the texture is perfect when compared to actual South Indian cities. The one thing I did not like was that the wait staff seemed a bit too attentive, to the point of just trying to get you in and out and seem to be watching you like a hawk (made me feel a bit uncomfortable).

Hardly Authentic. No disrespect to the staff operating the restaurant, but there was nothing Udipi or South Indian about the food, decor or service. The coconut chutney was sweet, with hardly any traces of spice. The sambar was just OK. The potato filling in the masala dosa was too bland. Idli seemed to have been made from unfermented batter. Overall not much value for money. And yes, try and cab it to the place. Parking is difficult to find and expensive.

Udupi has, hands-down, the best Indian food Ive had in the Bay Area. I love their chai tea, the palak paneer, and the dosas. Oh, and the mango lhassi...its really all so good! I always get an extra order of paratha to take home. The staff can be a bit slow, but theyre very kind and helpful. Also, they do not accept credit cards, so remember to bring cash.

This place is excellent. Ive taken 3 groups of people here and every time everyone has loved it. Its all vegetarian, and the spices are amazing. They used to serve free chai, but Im not sure if they still do. Either way, this place is so good, its definitely worth the walk or the short bus ride for students living on North or Southside

Traditional food in an interesting presentation. Their fried Idlis are a total must! The dosas are pretty huge and come with tasty stuffing. So if you eat lite, you will end up with half the dosa in a to go box. Salt lassi and mango lassi were pretty good. Good place for lunch during weekdays with colleagues.

The food is authentic and with great flavors. The delight for Vegi lovers. I suggest to all vegi and non vegi lovers to try this place. Price is reasonable, quality is consistent, service may be off, parking always an issue but restaurant is one of my favorites. Must try, wont be dissapointed.

I have eaten at Udupi several times. The food is OK, the service is terrible. The deal breaker for me: got FOOD POISONING on two different occasions of eating there. I made the connection only after the second time, unfortunately, since the friend I ate with got it too. I wont eat there again.

I went to this place looking for South Indian food based on the raving reviews posted. If you have ever eaten South Indian Vegetarian you would not want to step in here. Perhaps their Masala dosa is the only item that tastes good (based on my observation of the # of guests ordering it).

The Indian food here is very flavorful and made with care. The staff are very friendly and communicative. The restaurant itself is clean and comfortable. Ive made this a regular stop for decent Indian fare, not many really good Indian places in the East Bay.

Excellent dosas and South Indian style food. Atmosphere and service are OK but the top-notch food quality makes it worth repeat trips. I am saag dish aficionado and the dishes at Udipi really stand out. A must-visit for vegetarians and Indian food lovers.

This restaurant has more ways to make delicious vegetable dishes. Ive had several occasions to dine here. I recommemd it. This is a humble, neighborhood favorite that delivers five star appetizers and meals. This is absolutely flavor-full ethnic food.

The food was great! I had a spinach dosa and it was the best dosa I ever tasted. The employees were nice and replenished our condiments and water promptly. And the atmosphere was warm and cozy. Definitely will come back when in the bay area again.

Hearty vegetarian fare. Priced affordably. The venue is dated and the room requires a lot of TLC. Good stop for folks nostalgic for authentic South Indian food but not a good option for a nice date night or something similar.

Went with my husband and sister. Between the three of us, we shared vegetable samosas, spring dosa, and a combo paratha plate. The portions were big and everything was nice and spicy. Service was quick and good.

I love Udupi palace. I havent tried all the food yet but my favorite is the Rasam soup. You can get Rasap with some lentil doughnuts for like $5, which will fill you up for sure. Check it out!

Dosas are great, service is friendly, prices are quite fair, considering the portions. Perfect for a good, filling meal. I usually have leftovers. Dosas are big enough to share for lunch, IMO.
