Cottage bakery is amazing. Its not just the location, its not JUST the rum balls (although they are exquisite, and something you cannot find where I am from here in Vancouver,WA). It isnt just the coffee, cakes and pastries. The mile long display of them. Its the service that too rocks. I had a conversation there with a tall man with a mustache who I asked a million questions too before placing my order. Needless to say, he answered each and every one, with a slight smile on his face, and patience in his bright blue eyes. When I ordered my mocha and rumball, we had a small conversation pertaining about the bakery, its history, how the location was a bakery that opened in 1908. How the current owners bought it in 1974. I noticed at that point, how amazing all of the staff was. They were making conversations with their customers, the place was VERY busy. I too then realized that everyone was there not only for their rad pastries, seemingly rad sandwiches, but their service and staff and that warm "small town feel" you get walking into the place. I live a couple hours away from Long Beach, yet I have not been since I was 17 or 18..approximately 8 years back. I remembered the rum balls, a rum ball was the original reason I walked into the place. I recall having one years and years before on a youth group trip and my youth pastor telling me "they will wipe you out!!". Anyways, I am really glad I walked in there that day. People often think Long Beach is primarily for visiting Jake the alligator man, but stopping in Cottage Bakery, is a must see. This week, I will find myself back in the hustle and bustle of my life and job, and I think back on the little things of a good out of town trip and they make me smile knowing that ill make it back one day. I really wish I could thank the kind man personally for keeping the legacy of the bakery alive with conversation and great service. Five stars for food? Yes. Five stars for prime customer service? Absolutely.

My fiance and i came to long beach for christmas this year and the stay was really nice, untill the next morning when we were hungry and wanted some breakfast. we walked in, were looking at the menu that was all over the wall, and a lady said"what do you want", very rude like,i askes what do you have for the breakfast menu? she then pointed like we were stupid at the menu above her head. we ordered two breakfast sanwiches, and so she gets them together , and i notice she microwaved everything, not a good thing for a bakery that serves breakfast in my book! so we as tourist got very rood customer service and chewy microwaived breakfast sandwiches! we will never come to this so called cottage bakery again. by the way the ladys name that was talking and seriving to us, her name is "rocky".

The old bald guy Ill call moustache was very rude to my wife. After my teenage kids ordered my wife was waiting patiently for our order and to pay when moustache asks if she knows what she wants. She says we already ordered and just needed to pay. When my wife says that another gentleman took the order and he had it written down he started to yell at her and told her she should be smart enough to know what her order was. My kids are from 19 to 13 years old and some in between i think there old enough to order there own food. Since the order was written down she didnt think she needed to keep track of what each one got. He was a complete ass and when she left crying and he saw me walk in he went to the back. Food was ok but not worth the putting up with assholes like moustache.

Awful customer service. Got scolded by the older woman working there because I tried to order my coffee at the breakfast counter and not the till, which was five feet away. After waiting 25 minutes for an Americano I finally got it... I am not one to waste coffee but this was awful and undrinkable. They let the shots sit so it was bitter and tasted like burnt, watered-down coffee. When I tried to talk to the manager she was dismissive and refused to do anything to rectify the situation, even when I asked for a measly 10% reduction in my ticket. Ive been here several times before and never had a real positive experience, but Im for sure not giving them any more chances.

Im a local that came here every day. Then I started paying attention to where the employees hands are.... They have never washed hands in front of me, they handle cash all day while touching your food with no gloves. Ive given them more and more chances to prove their self. And every time I see them touching my food with bare hands. Trust me I want to eat here and not have my food touching germs. Try not to think of all the strip clubs that the money has been inside then in the hands of the person touching your food. Buy gloves for your employees!!!!!!!

Small bakery in a tourist town, but not touristy. I was afraid this would be one of those tourist trap bakeries that one often finds in tourist towns, but it was more like a very popular local bakery. Great selection of danishes, doughnuts and good coffee. My daughter was disappointed however that there were no savory pastries that e could see. Friendly atmosphere. E were there early on a Saturday and it wasnt too crowded, but I looked like it would be crowded soon.

The poor cook was working her butt off trying to get all the orders done in her absolutely miniscule area. She was friendly and her food was nice and greasy. The woman at the counter was extremely rude. Their whole set up is kind of a mess, and it took forever because the cook didnt have any help at the time. The cook was the only redeeming factor about this place, but not enough for me to ever go back.

I love the Strawberry Seapods, Maple bars, & Devil Dogs. They make a lot of delicious donuts from scratch everyday. They also have day old donuts you can buy as well. They make their own bread so sandwiches are good and so is their coffee and lattes. They make a good clam chowder as well. The only bad thing is you have to have cash (they do have an atm inside though).

Went there to get lunch with my kids. Ordered them hot dogs. Found out after ordering that they only take cash. I did not get any lunch and we all three shared one drink as that was all I had enough cash on me for. They seemed to be good quality hot dogs and buns, but the hot dogs were microwaved and poorly at that. Hot and cold spots all over. I will not be coming back.

Yes it may be a hassle that they only take cash - but there is an ATM in the bakery - JUST BRING CASH! its sooooo worth it everything they make is very very good! especially the applesauce doughnuts - call ahead and order them the day before because they dont make them all the time. I have never been treated rudely! and very reasonably priced.

Didnt know what to expect, pleasantly surprised. Wide variety of beautiful baked goods. Everything we tried was delicious. (Cant remember the names. Raspberry layered dessert, hoagie-sized cream puffs, and cookies). The young guy who helped us was super nice and made great recommendations. Expect to pay with cash or check. Worth stopping.
