Down in Des Moines, in one of those "location might suck" kind of corners (everyone coming into the town can see the place, but figuring out how to get there, around triangles, traffic islands and even a roundabout, can be tricky) is an inconspicuous little place called the Thai Bistro. From this unassuming name with an unassuming front, youd assume it was one of those gazillion or so Thai restaurants that dot the Puget Sound landscape. Youd be half-right. Inside, you quickly come into something different: a home that has been converted into a restaurant, but with the architecture intact. It feels nothing like a restaurant. Then the other details hit you: every table has a unique and beautiful tablecloth, and where there arent 19th century wooden dining chairs, the ordinary black four-footed chairs that would have served you in any diner have been clothed in hand-sewn silk covers that not only hide their ordinariness but give the place a bright, cheerful sheen that will make you smile. Each placing is equally carefully chosen and assembled with exquisite care, ending with a seven-inch decorative... thing... of wrought iron that holds it all down while looking like a cross between godzillas letter opener and the Kaisers war helmet. My wife ordered the Ocean Surprise, with a Mango Lhassi that she later said was completely up to her standards. I ordered something called the Basket of the Sea. (Des Moines is an old fishing boat harbor, now turned over to wealthy people with enough money to buy yachts, but not enough intelligence to live with them sanely.) The Ocean Surprise consisted of scallops, shrimp, wontons, leechee, avocado and mango in a green curry that was utterly delicious. Everything was cooked perfectly. The Basket of the Sea was a surprise: on oven-baked husk of aluminum foil, inside of which I found mussels, shrimp, scallops, squid, with basil leaves and spinach in a red curry paste so thick it was almost grainy, and so soft it melted to satin when it touched my tongue. With a side of jasmine rice, both meals were delightful. I havent had red curry like that before, and I will definitely have it again. There is a family altar along one wall, typical in Thai restaurants, and the kitschiness of it (plastic pumpkins from the recently passed Halloween flickered with LEDs next to hand-blown glass vases with flowers) made the rest of the place seem elegant and delightful. The food was fabulous and the ambience extraordinary. It was a momentary transport to another world, and I recommend it.

This place used to be fantastic. The ingredients used to be fresh, prices used to be reasonable, and portions used to be plentiful. This was a place my wife and I frequented largely because my wife has a gluten intolerance and this was one of the few places in town where she didnt have to worry about what she was eating. Then in late February, they changed management. Half of their pleasant staff disappeared, the quality of the ingredients sharply decreased and portion sizes were halved, while prices and salt content increased, and the past few times weve gone back, my wife has had gluten reactions from dishes that are supposed to be gluten free. Ive also found myself feeling sluggish and tired after eating here, much like I do after eating Chinese food. It never used to be that way. I used to recommend Phra Khun Thai Bistro to everyone locally because there arent any stellar Chinese restaurants in the area but now Im telling those same people the same things Ive said here. Many of them have said that theyve noticed the decline also. Im sorry to say that 1 star is all this restaurant is worth anymore.

Ate at this place for the first time on Sunday and enjoyed it so much that I had to come back on Thursday to share it with a couple friends. Im really impressed with the quality of service at this restaurant - the waitress is very attentive and the chef checked in with us several times to make sure the dishes were to our liking (he even recommended a couple off-menu dishes for my spice-loving friend to try!) The atmosphere is very sweet: lots of little decorative details that make the place seem classy enough for a romantic date without breaking the bank. The food is seasoned well and is in good portions (I had leftovers from both visits and they tasted great when heated up for lunch the next day!) Personally, I prefer very little spice, but my friend who enjoys the heat was impressed with the amount of spice and flavor in her 4-star dish. Overall, Id highly recommend this restaurant!

I made reservations for a special luncheon for seven at this wonderful restaurant, though I had only read the reviews online. I could tell, when speaking on the phone to Tanya that this was going to be an adventure. Entering the restaurant, everyone let out a surprised "Oh" as we saw the beautifully set tables and noted the shiny ebony grand piano in the center of the space. Lunch was served on fine china, and was not only beautifully prepared, tasty and fresh, but the elegance of the whole experience was capped by Tanyas agreeing to sit at that piano and play some lovely songs in her graceful and gentle style. The prices were reasonable, and we felt as though we had truly "been" somewhere. I strongly recommend Suthanya Thai Renaissance Bistro!

Glad to see a Thai restaurant in downtown Des Moines! Based on my three times eating at Suthanya the quality of the food has varied. The "Pad Thai" has ranged from tasting too ketchupy to too fishy, while the "Swimmingly Rama Chicken" was way too sweet. What I like -- friendly service, they use organic veggies, have a choice of brown rice, and they dont package their takeout in styrofoam containers. What could improve -- refinement of the dishes -- take a stab at emulating the flavors of some of Seattles great Thai restaurants such as Thaiku, Buddha Ruksa and Mae Phim. I want this restaurant to be successful!

This is the best Thai food I ever had in my life!! Very friendly, rich and luxurious ambience. The waitress played the piano between her service, she always had a beautiful smile and very friendly. The food tasted so good, cooked with fresh ingredients every course of the meal from apetizer to desert was very fresh, cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. I have been to many Thai restaurants in and around seattle and even in different parts of the US, but this tops my list among all the restaurants. A place I would love to go again and again!! They made this a memorable Christmas lunch!!

We tried their delivery service once and it arrived late and cold and they didnt get the order right, but since most restaurants dont even offer delivery, I dont hold that against them. We have been to Thailand and, unlike another reviewer, find most Thai restaurants mediocre to poor. Suthanyas food is as good as the best we had in Thailand and better than Biatong in Southcenter. The restaurant itself is a bit kitschy, but since we usually do take-out, I also dont hold that against them. They could do with a better internet presence and make them and their menu easier to find.

The real deal! Authentic Thai in a quaint, grandmas parlor type atmosphere at reasonable prices. Service was great and food was so good! I will definitely come back. My appetizer was the fresh summer rolls with shrimp...yum! My dinner was the avocado curry with chicken served over brown rice...amazing! And my dessert was the mango passion...best and most unique mango sticky rice Ive had. The only negative was I ate so much that I had nothing to take home. Dont let the old sign on the building fool you, they havent put up their new sign yet, but its them. Enjoy!
