Tonight I enjoyed what I can honestly say is the most pleasurable dining experience Ive ever had! We didnt know about Yama before tonight, but my husband got a gift certificate from a client as a tip. Our food arrived with an extra roll (a fancy one!), which they said was on the house. Everything was delicious! They had several combo options that came with Miso soup (best Ive had!) and a salad, and the rolls were bigger than at most sushi places, but the prices didnt seem to be any higher. The ingredients seemed to be of excellent quality. When we tried to order a cheesecake slice the waiter informed us he already had one on the way - on the house! Then, when he dropped off our bill he said he had a gift for us and gave us a framed picture! It was one of those 3D/holographic sorts of pictures, with three different scenes of adorable dogs frolicking amongst flowers. We dont know what inspired such generosity; our 6 month old -teething- son even broke one of their soy sauce plates! All we can think is that they were smitten with him, despite our little mishap. But who knows, maybe theyre just exceedingly generous people! Everyone else in the restaurant seemed to be having a great time, too. There were two birthday parties, which got a slice of cheesecake with a candle and a song. The singing was pleasantly understated, jovial but not raucous. The service was excellent (thanks David!), the food arrived promptly but not so soon we felt we were being rushed, and the atmosphere was chic, yet welcoming. We went in nice casual clothes, but got a better dining experience than if we had gone somewhere with a dress code! I HIGHLY recommend Yama the next time youre craving sushi!

I dont know what happened to this place, but I wont be going back. I used to go when it was a small hole in the wall. It was awesome then. Wonderful food and special items. They expanded and it was still good. And slowly its gone way down hill. Went a year ago or so and the tuna was a little on the not so fresh side. I figured off day. Went last weekend on a Sunday and I couldnt believe the menu. They only have 5 pieces of sushi to choose from (salmon/tuna/white fish/eel) - what kind of sushi bar has 5 items only? and maybe 10 special rolls. The rolls are almost all the same - (same 5 items listed in different order). Waitress said owner wanted to narrow down to customer favorites. Clearly owner wants to have a limited supply of fish to try and keep fresh. Ordered a few "different" rolls. They were awful. Way too much rice rolled sloppy. Not fresh. Too bad when this was once top of the line. I dont know how they are still in business seriously.

We came here to try the sushi since we live close by. The service was some of the BEST service we have ever had. Our server was helpful, checked on us regularly and was accommodating. The entire staff was very friendly and nice. We also had a free roll on the house. Before we came here, I looked at all the pics of the sushi and saw that they were all smothered in sauce. I do not care for the drenching of sauces on the sushi so I ordered all of our sushi without the sauces. Even without the sauces on top, their crab meat was mixed with other sauces that was not noted on the menu. This really overpowered the rest of the flavors of the rolls. My husband finished his rolls only because he was starving. We did not like any of the rolls we ordered. That crab mixture was in every roll, we just couldnt get away from it. If you like saucy sushi, this is the place for you.

Nice little gem tucked away in a corner strip mall. A little hard to find if you dont know where you are going, but worth the effort. Even non-sushi eaters will find something on the menu here, like my son who has the teriyaki chicken. Great variety of rolls to choose from, and plenty of combo options available as well. Not sure if they always do this, but the last two times we went they gave us an extra roll on the house. The one they picked I think was based on what we had ordered - similar ingredients and spice level. The only minor improvement I could see is a little less sauce on some of the rolls, at least the thick sauce that seems like mayo and makes the rolls a little heavier than I like. Very friendly staff, good prices, and fresh sushi.

I dont write a lot of reviews, but if I have an absolute favorite, I think that business deserves recognition. Yama is my favorite sushi restaurant and has been for years. I can see that Im not alone in that! Its a small restaurant with a lot of ambiance. Not overly formal -- comfortable, colorful, and attractive. The prices are reasonable, too. The servers will often come by with a free roll for everyone to try. In my experience, it has usually been the volcano roll or the candy cane roll. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the sushi is addictively, mouth-wateringly DELICIOUS. Last time I went with my friends, we finished, paid the check, sat there looking at each other for a minute and said.... "Do you want to split one more?"

Would give 0 stars if I could. Hot salad, hot fruit desert, cherry in the salad, hot rice in my cooked rolls, room temperature rice for my cold rolls, small fish portions for my rainbow roll, and roe on my rainbow roll. Slow service, high prices, and way too much sauce on the sushi. If youve ever been to japan, dont come here. Had the nerve to give me a free roll that I didnt ask for instead of comping my sushi that I had.. and then tried to force me to take it home. When I was already displeased with the taste of the sushi I actually ordered and wanted.

I feel the same as AF Ramsey. The fish tasted either not fresh or just not the best quality. I thought one of the rolls was made with tuna that tasted canned. The rolls were not as good as I remember a few years ago. Something is different about the fish. When this place had basic decor, the food was at its best. Now, the decor is gaudy and the food is barely above grocery store quality. I actually like Krogers sushi better than what we had last night. The server was great though.

My friend and I had an amazing experience here! The food was great, the service was superb, and we even received a roll and cheesecake on the house! The only slight problem with a lot of the sushi is that it can be really sweet, or perhaps it was the rolls I ordered. Either way, Yama Sushi is my favorite in the Hampton Roads so far! The prices are comparable to most restaurants. Lets face it, if you have a hearty appetite and go out for sushi -- its not going to be cheap.

Staff was both very attractive and courteous. Went there for lunch today and had the Yama roll and salmon sushi. Best part they showed up with a roll on the house called The Iron Man which was fantastic! Its just unfortunate that Im only here on business for a few weeks but I will definitely be going back before I leave. I highly recommend this place to anyone great atmosphere, great food; enjoy!
