This is why I go to Chinatown. Sure, I like Dim Sum, and will on rare occasion end up at a "menu" place (although all of my old favorites have, sadly, closed), but the lure of the bakery items at Chiu Quon is always tempting me to hop the Red Line south to Cermak. I am particularly enamored of their BBQ Pork buns and the "sesame balls" with the red bean paste. These are favorites that I can barely stand to NOT buy if Im in the neighborhood. Ive had other "savory" buns as well (I have one Pork Sung bun waiting in the kitchen today for lunch - purchased because they were out of the BBQ when there the other evening), and theyve all been at least "good" (if sometimes not quite to this round-eyes palate). The sweet buns (with the singular exception of the VERY addictive sesame balls) are not things that Ive indulged much in over the past decade or so, but my kids tell me that theyre great ... and the cookies are always a treat. I dont believe weve ever tried their "fancy" (birthday/wedding) cakes, but they have these available by the slice in a number of variations. Also, theres a whole cafe behind the bakery storefront, which is a bit off-putting if youre not Chinese (its really not set up for ordering in English!), but weve eaten there at least once, and the experience was interesting and the food (I believe we had some sort of noodle soup) was tasty. However, for me, this is all about the pastries. I suppose its a good thing that it takes a bit of planning/time/effort for me to get there, or Id be bulking up on my favorite items many times a week, rather than every couple of months!

Chiu Quon is one of my favorite bakeries when I am making a breakfast run in Chinatown! They open at 7am which is just enough time to drop in and grab a few items on your way to work or school. Yeah, the place looks a bit dingy and raggedy, but hey, but sometimes those hole-in-the-wall places produce some of the best food and Chiu Quon is no exception. Theres a huge variety to choose from including buns to cakes to cookies to mooncake and even hot food that is served in the conjoining room to the bakery. Some of the items that I always get when I come and should not be missed are the Portuguese egg tart. Dont get these confused with the normal Chinese egg tarts - you can tell from the brûléed tops of the custard. Compared to the Chinese egg tarts, these pastries have a creamier custard, which I absolutely love and could eat boxes and boxes all by myself. I suggest going early for these cause these bad boys sell out fast! Another item I recommend getting is the egg and sausage bao - think of it as an Asian breakfast sandwich. Inside the light and airy exterior of the bao contains a filling of Chinese sausage, pork and egg - such a delicious combination to satisfy the hungriest of appetites. Prices are super reasonable and staff does speak/comprehend a decent amount of English. If all else fails, just point to what you want - theyll get the point. Street parking is easy peasy if you go early, but all bets are off later on in the day as that street can be a bit of a clusterfuck. Overall, its a great place for cheap and delicious eats!

I hate leaving bad reviews for local small businesses, but Ive been here a couple times the past month & each time, theres a female server working thats brisk AF & loves to serve other people while simultaneously putting together your order. While ordering, another customer will often ask her a question about the price of a bun or whatnot & shell answer. That random person just totally spoke over you, but she heard what you said, so I guess all is well, but for the same price & quality as other bakeries in Chinatown, I dont see why my fam likes going here. Theres nothing that they do spectacularly well. The only nice thing was that after a certain time, their dim sum goes on sale ($1 crepes/cherng fun). For egg tarts, I go to St. Annas. Buttery soft dinner rolls, I go to Tasty Place (品味).

Wonderful place. Delicious buns, Dim Sum and baked goods. Visited on a Sunday morning and it was crowded and quite noisy but worth the short wait for a table. We were about the only Gweilo in the place ;-), but everyone was friendly and we were well served. Take a pen or pencil with you, ask for a menu, and peruse the showcase looking for things to order. There may be things not on the menu - dont be afraid to write them in at the bottom. Buns are fresh "white bread" type rolls with fillings. Steamed buns are so fluffy you may not be able to eat all of it. Best sesame balls weve ever had. Coconut and egg custard tarts were delicate and delicious with tea. Cash only!

Finally chinese food that doesnt make me sick afterwards. Beef seemed freshly made. Somehow, I can tell when meat has been reheated and usually I eat vegetable things to avoid that nasty reheated taste, but because of positive reviews I decided to order Beef chop suey and was so relieved and suprised. Although, we shouldnt be suprised, it should be standard. Def try their bakery nxt door. Their Sesame balls with bean paste is so good!!!♡♡ Dont ever change your quality of food. Keep it freshly made PLEASE.

Lovely store. Very clean and the people are friendly and quick to help. I wish there was more drink options other than in the chilled coolers - some tea would go great with their sweeter pastries! I had the sweet top red bean bun and my boyfriend had the cheesecake and strawberry mousse cake. All were delicious and had great flavor. Bathrooms are super nice too! Very happy with our stop here, will be sure to visit again.

Ordered sweet and sour shrimp and shrimp fried rice. The Sweet Sour shrimp was good but only 6 pieces for 6.75..!? The shrimp fried rice was a bit bland, just tasted the oil and rice. also was a bit smaller than what I am used to from Chinese food restaurants. Slightly disappointed, wish I would have gone to regular spot instead. Food wasnt awful but I did expect a bit more quality for the price...

The place has dim sum everyday, and I would gladly avoid paying and looking for parking spots in Chinatown to eat here (free parking lot). Definitely worth a try for us southsiders and it is only a 10 minute drive from chinatown if you wish to eat here. The bakery has good treats, but like any bakery slim pickings later in the evening.

Colazione al volo prima di tuffarci in Chicago. A buon prezzo anche se alla cassa quando vedono che sei europeo ti mettono la sopratassa.

Im from MN and when ever I come to chinatown, I always make sure that I get some BBQ pork buns. Best I have ever had. Texture and consistency matches dim sum restaurants even after being refrigerated. Must try. I also call ahead to order 50+ buns so I can take home and never disappointed after a 6 hour car ride.

I was a bit disappointed. Not up to the standards that I thought based on the reviews. The food was not that warm and the taste wasnt there. The milk tea was borrowing, not even close to Hong Kong style milk tea. The egg tart was alright!
