Bouchon fills the gap in richmonds dining scene left by the other french restaurants. Its the kind of place you go to when youre looking for amazing food to be shared with good company. Its hip feel really compliments the classic french cuisine with fresh twist. Ive had the pleasure of dining there on numerous occasions, and Ive never had a mediocre meal, let alone a bad one. Most of the other french restaurants locally do not accommodate vegetarians and as most of my family is vegetarian they have a difficult time when we go out as they always end up with some lame salad. At Bouchon, though, the chef is always exceedingly accommodating of dietary restrictions. Their menu on its own is amazing though. Last weekend I had the arugula salad with goat cheese rostido and blood oranges. I never realized how well citrus can pair with cheese! Also I had a monkfish special that included a creamy, lemony butter sauce. And their mac and cheese is a personal favorite of mine...I kid you not, its the stuff dreams are made of. My date had the filet mignon, which he just couldnt get over. When we finally got to our third course we were both incredibly full, but after two courses of such high caliber we couldnt pass up the opportunity to try their desserts. Ive had the elderflower flavored creme brulee many times before (and its AMAZING!), so I thought I would try something new. I had the profiterole, while my date chose to try the chocolate mousse. Both were out of this world! The vanilla gelato made in house combined with the puff pastry and drizzled chocolate just about blew my mind. Just when I thought things couldnt get any better I tried my dates mousse, which blew my mind again. Oh and I never had a chance to mention the beverage selection! Bouchon has a great cocktail list (of which my favorite is the Bouchon Cocktail: champagne, st. germain, and hibiscus!) and an amazing wine list, both by the glass and bottle. The choices can be overwhelming, but the well trained servers are always helpful when it comes to pairing wine with your courses. As a native richmonder, Ive been to just about every restaurant in the city, so you can believe me when I say Bouchon is truly something new and special. With the amazing menu combined with unparalleled service, clearly they will be around for a while. If I could give it more stars I would.

I rarely am afforded the opportunity to have lunch with my wife since we work about 45 minutes away from one another. I am sorry I wasted my lunch with her going to this restaurant. We were seated right away and our waitress was very nice which are the only positive aspects of our dining experience. Our food took approximately 40 minutes to arrive with no apology or explanation, so I am assuming this is a normal wait, but in my opinion far too long for a weekday lunch from work, especially when there are only four tables occupied in the restaurant. I ordered the beef tenderloin on baguette, my wife had the buckwheat crepe. I asked for my tenderloins medium rare, one was rare, the other was raw and inedible. I complained to the waitress, but stated that I did not want more food- just for the manager to be made aware of the issue. Because of the long wait for the food, I just didnt have time to wait for another order, even if it was cooked properly and arrived quickly. Our waitress apologized and returned after about 10 minutes (apparently conferring with someone in the kitchen) and offered to have my food re-cooked. I assumed (or hoped) she meant cook something new, but explained that I didnt have the time. She apologized again and brought the check, no one else came to offer an apology. When I looked at the check I saw that my meal had not been taken off the bill, so apparently at Bistro Bobette they believe in charging customers for food that is inedible. I suppose my $16 lunch entree was more important than my continued business.

I will start of by saying I thought the food here was pretty good. The beef medallions were tender and flavorful. The gratin potatoes were good. The string beans were also good. That being said, there were a few other areas of concern. I went here for Valentines Day dinner. Actually, Valentines Day was Thursday, but we had reservations for Saturday. No one told us that they would no longer have the Valentines Day menu on Saturday when we called to make reservations. That was a bit of a let down. Inside, the place is rather small and dimly lit. It was cold outside and ever time the door opened you could feel it. One couple came in and were seated near the door. When they asked to be moved to a different seat, the hostess said she needed to "check reservations". I dont know what bearing that has on moving someone to a different seat. Nevertheless, after some prodding, they were finally relocated too a different table by one of the waiters. We also noticed some tables were waiting an extraordinarily long time for their meals to come out. At a table next to us, the couple was told their meal would be comped because the appetizer took 40 minutes to come out, but then they never got their main dish. Needless to say, the customer was irate. It didnt seem like much was done to satisfy them either. Although, I did enjoy the food here, I dont think it was good enough to justify the high prices. Also, based on the experiences that some of my fellow diners had, I would be hesitant to return.

My husband and I went to Bouchon last night for the first time. Oh my goodness! It was more than I could have hoped for. A small intimate restaurant located in the heart of Shockhoe Bottom, on entering it felt decidedly - French! Greeted and seated quickly and warmly. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable about her menu, and the wine selection is amazing. We had the best food I have had since eating at Joel Robuchons (and for a fraction of the price!) I am not one of those people who live to eat, I eat to not be hungry, but here at Bouchon I ate not only my order but half of my husbands food too! Bless his heart - he couldnt stop me stealing his food! Heres what we had - appetizers, rockfish ceviche with mango, sweetbreads. Main courses - Monkfish and Ratatouille, Seared Calves Liver with Asparagus and cheese. Double expressos to finish, the whole food bill $78.00. Bargain!!!! (No that was not our entire bill but when a restaurant has Chateau-Neuf du Pape on their wine list - well one simply MUST! Right?) The owners are charming. I urge everyone to go to Buchon and try it out. We will definitely be back, they have so many other things on the menu I want to eat!!!!!

As a young person with not a lot of resources working downtown I can appreciate Bouchon for a whole other reason… After reading all the positive press on Bouchon I decided to visit, and ever since their bar around happy hour has been my most favorite after work decompression chamber. With an enormous selection of beverages coupled with a helpful knowledgeable bartender, even with my most frazzled after work moods I can be sure I’ll be taken good care of. Bouchon also has a wonderful bar menu, my absolute favorite being the mussels in white wine with pom frites- too much for just one person, so good I have it every time. Thinking I’ll just go and have one glass of wine, I always end up staying long enough to need dinner. I am a pescetarian that also doesn’t eat dairy, eating only veggies and sea food can sometimes make it hard to eat out, but Bouchon’s creative seasonal local veggies and accommodating and caring chef make my eating restrictions happy. It is the best food and the best people in a sophisticated energetic atmosphere; Bouchon is an exceptional addition to the neighborhood and you must visit.
