I came here after asking Siri for a french restaurant near me to get creme brulee. Myself and 2 friends were very under dressed but despite that was still serviced professionally. Youre greeted at entrance by the aroma of flowers. The interior has a sort of dark cherry wood feel to it. The prices were great for the quality and service. (The creme brulee was 7.50) I only came here for desert, but overall the atmosphere was very appealing. They had some drinks but it wasnt something I was particularly interested in at the moment, but from what I saw it was limited compared to what youd expect. For future reference, I would dress appropriately, not that it was a big deal; but at the same time, its one of those places you dont want to walk into looking like you just came back from "clubbin". Im not referring to seals. Our waiter was an adult male, polite, with a sharp appearance contrary to what I had expected. (Some college or high school kid dying to make eye contact and call me sweety or something along those lines). 8/10 would bang again. This would be a good place to go to take someone on a date that isnt an Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, or "another chain restaurant". I see someone else made mention of the behavior of other guests and all I can say is "that happens everywhere". Your circumstances are not that of a typical experience and that kind of thing can happen anywhere.

Had a great experience at Chez Max. The location was great, no problems finding parking. Inside, the decor was nice, upscale, dimly lit. The food was delicious! My wife and I had the artichoke hearts and smoked salmon for appetizers, which were both outstanding. I had a she crab soup, which was tasty, albeit a little salty. My wife had the rockfish with ratatouille for her main, which was excellent and I had the NY strip, which was very tender. It came with a peppercorn crust seasoning which gave it added flavor and mashed potatoes and string beans, both of which were delicious. For dessert, we had the apple peach tart and the molten lava cake. My only gripe would be that our server, although friendly, was not quite as attentive as I would have liked. We spent more time than I would have expected waiting to have plates collected, to get more water, to pick up the check, etc. We spent a little over two hours at the restaurant. That being said, I thought the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food and definitely look forward to returning and trying out some of their other menu items.

Our favorite restaurant in Richmond! The atmosphere is inviting and the food is constantly superb. I always have the escargot and they never disappoint. Unfortunately escargot are a bit hard to find in Richmond so I cant help but order them each time we visit. They are prepared in a puff pastry with plenty of garlic. The salad and dressing are the perfect prelude to the main course. I tend to order the fish special which is usually halibut. It comes perfectly cooked with veggies and basil mashed potatoes. Yum! Dover sole is also a regular on the list of specials and its served table side for a fun presentation. I read other reviews that say the entrees are bland but I havent had that experience. Ive loved everything and so have my fellow diners. Well worth the price!i

Best french food in Richmond area. Top notch service without stuffy attitude. Decor is dated but lends itself to the old fashioned approach to classic French food. This is the real-deal -- not adjusted for todays lower fat recipes -- lots of cream and butter -- so plan on a major calorie splurge. Classic dishes prepared consistently and with perfection, and specials are truly special. Contrary to other reviews, you should definitely make reservations for Fridays and Saturdays...sometimes difficult to get the last minute reservation and then other times its surprisingly empty. Prices are fair for top notch food and service. Wine list could be expanded a bit.

Massively disappointing. We intended to have a quiet intimate dinner for our 10th anniversary, but the atmosphere was anything but quiet. Perhaps it was the hard wood floors causing acoustical issues or the fact that the tables were extremely close together combined with rather undistinguished guests who were speaking so loudly and raucously that their behavior would have been more appropriate at the Irish pub down the street. This behavior was not isolated to a single table. The food was good, but in no way exceptional and our waiter could have been a bit more attentive. We actually left before dessert because the atmosphere was so unpleasant.

Huge disapointment. We went there last night for my husbands birthday and everything was bad from the service to the food. The bread was at least a few days old, the crab cake was chewy, my steak was hard as a rock and burnt and my husbands lamb chops which he requested medium were rare. We brought this to the servers attention and he did nothing...not even an apology. I have eaten at a lot of French restaurants in the country and this is definitely one of the worst on my list.

We love Chez Max for the great French food. The atmosphere is relaxed and you can hear yourself and tablemates talk unlike at many other popular restaurants in the city. It is my familys go to place for birthdays and celebrations. Annie the owner is very charming and French. She and the staff are always attentive

Excellent food and service, I have eaten here since they opened. You will not find a more tender steak, especially at the price.
