Food is ok.. Quantity is less... Service is really bad as if they have no clue how to run this place. Ate here once, it wasnt too crowded but the people working there didnt know how to handle the service... we waited very long for everything... no one was coming to take our orders or get us water, later on when we wanted more food, they were running around everywhere but no one was paying any attention so we changed our mind and asked for the bill instead, which again took very long... Ordered take away thinking I might have caught them on a bad day so wanted to give another try... I specifically mentioned to the manager to put enough rice with the mutton dish.. there was hardly any rice packed. Really bad service!! not worth the money.

For the first time I went to this restaurant because my friends told me food is good there. We were two persons. When we arrived to the restaurant, Waiter asked us to seat in bar s front desk. We went there to have lunch so we were little uncomfortable to seat in bar. Again they told us we do not have to have drinks to seat in bar. That was ridiculous. They asked us to seat in bar because there were no two person table left but there were plenty of others table left( 4 persons and 6 persons tables). But they were not ready to give the 4 persons table because we were only two. That was disgusting. I can not say about the food but the waiters behavior was disgusting. Guys, please learn how to treat with customer first.

This is the best place to go for South Indian style food. I spent a summer in India and miss the food terribly, especially in the northern virginia area where Indian food seems to consist of bland creamy butter chicken and greasy naan. We visit Kalpasi once a week to satisfy my cravings. I love the vegetable pakora at Kalpasi, tastes just like the afternoon tiffin in India. Also enjoy the chicken chetinaad, rassam, sambar, and veg thali. Even enjoy their North Indian style dishes like paneer tikka masala and channa masala. Alex and Sam are also extraordinarily hospitable! Always a pleasant and tasty experience at Kalpasi.

This is the second time I am visiting this restaurant. The best thing I liked is they played Ilaiyaraaja tamil songs throughout, this is the only pleasantness I felt. Last time I felt food was average after eating appam and other curries. This time today I had very bad experience eating some non-veg curries and biryani. Grounded and over dosed garam masala(so called south indian spices) is the culprit. I shared table with 10 other people, almost 8 people shared the same experience as me. I am sorry to say this...after effect and how our body reacts to such food is important when we eat food at any restaurant.

Order any south Indian food in Kalpasi Choice is yours! Just close your eyes and taste it! I bet that you wouldnt realize that you are in US, the taste bud takes you back to home land. Its just that ! Taste is just impeccable and native! iExcellent Service!! I wouldnt hesitate to go back several times! I just loved it! There is a flip side as well! What if you have never tasted the true chettinad style (kalpasi is an authentic chettinad style), you wouldnt have pleasant feel for the first time. Just tell the waiter that you want less spicy and they will take care rest. THUMBS UP!

Not sure about non-veg but our experience with veg food was pathetic. We ordered mix veg korma and paneer Tikka masala with naan and masala dosa and onion kulcha. We asked mild food since we are with kids too. Veg korma: worst ever, super spicy with no salt and no taste, looks like cook was in hurry Paneer Tikka Masala: was only thing you can eat Masala dosa: masala was amazingly spicy with gravy!!! and no salt at all. Chutney no taste Naan: was ok Onion kulcha: not good as well Overall they ruined our Friday night dinner. Will not go again nor recommend anyone.

Have been there 4 times now. Tonight we had 3 different kinds of dishes, 2 non-vegetarian (chicken/kingfish) and 1 vegetarian. All dishes were pretty watery and on the blander side except for the kingfish which had a REALLY strong fish flavor. The dishes were primarily gravy with little meat. When it costs $12-15 a dish, I would expect it to have more than 5 pieces of chicken or 6 pieces of paneer. I dont mind their chef mutton curry, but for around $15 bucks the portion size is too small. The lack of consistency from visit to visit is not worth the gamble.

I am a regular to this place when I have to eat or take out some good Indian food. It used to be not so expensive place and gets you the right amount of food for right price. Unfortunately, looks like its not the same place it used to be. Today, I took a take out of Koli Roast for which the price for $14.5 and the quantity was so less, it made me think to give up this place in future. The taste is good, but I would expect them to live up to their standard of giving good food at good price and not overcharge. I have posted pic of my take out.

One of the worst Indian restaurants in and around Virginia. We ordered 7-8 items including lamb chops, chicken 65, chicken lollipops, Naan, chicken briyani, fish curries n vegetables Karma but all the items were like rotten, over cooked n some not fully cooked. In the menu , they have mentioned chicken wings on lollipops but we got over cooked chicken legs. They have mentioned grilled paneer in the menu but we got fried paneer n too little cubes . Worst experience ever in my 30 years of life in the US. Stay Away from these crooks.

Ordered a take out - idli with sambhar and chutney. I asked whether it is available, the manager said yes. Waited 20 mins and then later he said it is not there and kitchen is closed. He offered something else and we ordered aapam and pondu kozhambu. Now it is mentioned in the menu that it comes with a bowl of steamed rice. Went home and there is no rice? It was late in the night and they shut off for the day. What will I do with just kozhambu? Pathetic service.

I have sort of become regular at Kalpasi and the team never disappoints me. It is an indian restaurant with family like environment. The owner (Alex) goes that extra mile to make sure you enjoy the meal and have pleasant experience. Price is so reasonable and it offers authentic south Indian and North Indian food-both DELICIOUS! To some of the raters, People come here for quality so it does get busy, please have some patience.

The food was great. Had the lamb tiki masala and onion naan. The downside is the service is aweful. Took 10 minutes just for them to come by to take our order. They never refilled my water and the water was room temperature tap water. My bill was around $18 and I had paid with a $20 and they didnt bring back the change and automatically assumed the change was a tip. The service was so bad I would not have left a tip.

Visited during memorial day .The server told us it is medium spicy but its very very very spicy and I cannot eat at all. They told us the food is already marinated and cannot reduce the spice. Due to spiciness I could taste the flavor and keep drinking water. It was very embarrassing for us as we took an american with us and she couldnt even eat one spoon. The service was worst and I will never visit again.
