TERRIBLE! Avoid at all cost especially if you are either not white, a mixed family or any minority, or even if you are simply expecting a respectful, friendly staff. The staff was extremely RUDE and just unfriendly, I absolutely suspect race had a lot to do with my awful experience (suspected it long before reading the other reviewers claims which I read after I posted this long but necessary review). Long story somewhat short- went out of my way to take my family to this cafe for the first time for lunch during spring break only to be treated like trash by the hostess (young girl, brunette I think her name was Jennifer?). We were ignored several times upon arrival even though we were the only party waiting to be seated initially. Finally asked 10 minutes later for a specific table outside and the hostess said "let me clean it up" but after waiting some more, purposely gave it away to another family who requested an outside table waaay after us (yes- they were a white family. Shocker!). We could not believe how we were being treated. When we complained the hostess looked me in the eye, shrugged her shoulders and rolled her eyes as she turned away. Did not care one bit I guess it was business as usual toward non-whites. Reported it to the "manager" but nothing was done so we left. Supposedly owner was on "vacation"...its too bad they didnt witness this atrocity. Worst part about this? My young kids witnessed the whole entire thing first hand and were so confused that I had to explain why we might have been treated as 3rd class citizens and why our table was given away to another similar family whose only distinguishable physical trait from us was the color of their skin. For the record, I truly believe the other, older reviewers claim that there are racists working in this restaurant and surely dining too. Might as well put up a "Whites Only" sign at this point. Just an awful awful environment to be in. Been dining all my life and never experienced such treatment until we set foot for the very first time in this establishment. Best advice- avoid the rude staff at Mason Dixon and go to the small diner just down the street instead! Cheaper, good food and a lot friendlier! And a short message to the owner- if you are offended by our suspicions, just imagine how we might feel! Offended?? Yikes, you oughta be ashamed instead!! Word of mouth travels fast...

This is a not older review about how good the food and service are. I hope this is a restaurant that stays open for many years to come. Our first time the was a couple of years ago. We got there at 12 on a Saturday. The place was packed and because its cold and raining out, the large outdoor patio wasnt available. There was a 25 minute wait, but we read the menu while waiting and ordered as soon as we sat down. My husband got the chicken and waffles and didnt have high hopes because he hadnt yet found any he liked. I got the shrimp and grits with the same low expectations. WOAH! As busy as it was, we got hot steaming food about 5 minutes later. I tasted his fist and it was like an explosion of flavor. Seriously. The chicken and waffles were so good that he stopped talking and just dug in. I tasted my shrimp and grits and honestly, Im not kidding - I got years in my eyes. It was creamy, flavorful, with bits of slightly crunchy red pepper and onion for texture. The shrimp was cooked PERFECTLY. Fast forward to today and we are regulars there. This is hands down THE BEST place in Virginia for breakfast, brunch or lunch.

The wife and I have driven past here many times, and always talked about how we should stop and try this place one day. Well, we finally did and now I regret that it took us so long. While the parking lots are very confusing (yes, lots, plural, there are two of them that arent connected to each other, only one of which has handicapped parking), and the restroom too small to get a wheelchair into, those were the only down sides. The food was just wonderful, and the staff attentive and cheerful. I had the french toast, and my wife had a breakfast sandwich made with a waffle, eggs, bacon and sausage, with a side of excellent home fries. The french toast was some of the best Ive eaten (not as good as my own, but close, really, really close) and everything was served promptly and hot. Im going to take a star off for no ADA compliant restroom, and for the really confusing parking situation, but everything else about the place, the menu and the staff was 5 stars.

A GEM! I moved to FXB last July and had to fully remodel my kitchen. Mason was my kitchen for 2 months and I can honestly say they are not only good at what they do, they treat me like a neighbor. We are neighbors. I feel like everything on the menu is meticulously prepared and I can tell that the person that arranges the menu puts carful thought into selecting the ingredients and flavors. My fav?... thats hard... everyday they have a different and unique soup that is difficult to not go for. The shrimp and grits is unreal... if you want to go light. Choose the Rachel sandwich... or the curry chicken salad sandwich! Oh and they have a crazy variety of hotdogs. This place is a must visit.

We are very new to the area and are always looking for a new place to have a great meal. Our server was Heather and she was awesome! Very attentive and upbeat. I cant say enough good things about the food! My daughter had the peanut butter and jelly stuffed French toast, I had the brunch special omelet which had loads of fresh veggies Italian sweet sausage, and AMAZING rye bread, and my wife went with a simple egg and toast meal that they somehow even to turn into fantastic. I would recommend Mason-Dixon to everyone looking for amazing breakfast, and now I am looking forward to lunch or dinner!

Racism and stomach problems. Dont go here if you arent white. Honestly, the name should have made me second guess this choice. After eating an overpriced brunch here, my girl and I were both sick in the stomach, plus we got a lot of creepy stares because we are interracial. Im not saying that they put something in our food, but Im not counting it out either. I do have to admit that the shrimp and grits tasted fantastic and I rather liked the pork chop as well, but getting sick after ruined this for us.

Cozy, but bigger inside than expected due to the unusual layout. The breakfast here is outstanding, and the service is impeccable. I had the chicken and waffles which was mouth watering, especially with the house maple bacon syrup. Coffee flows freely and you will want for nothing here if you like generous, Southern style breakfast. I havent tried lunch here but Ill be doing that very soon given my previous experience. Also, down the street is the famous Carls ice cream stand, if you have any room left.

I absolutely love this place. The food and staff are amazing. I love how even the staff knows the history. The first time I ever went, I was so impressed with the pride and love the staff displayed. Not only for us as customers, but for the cafe, their history, and its owners. They make you feel like you are visiting a friends. That speaks volumes. I know I am going to get great quality food and friendly service from a place that seems to take care of their people.
