I was surprised when I heard of this restaurant lately as I had never seen it come up before when searching for Indian food. I figured out why- its in the space now where Bangkok Thai Thalay used to be! Anyway, I was looking for a different Indian lunch buffet to try out other than my usual ones and I was extremely impressed. I love the Nepali pride in the restaurant decor, and there is a cute little "gift" section of Indian/Nepali stuff (overpriced, but fun to look at). But the best part of all was the lunch buffet! There was such a wide selection - multiple types of rice (including a yummy sweet Nepali rice), multiple types of breads and snacks, various sides (including a yummy pink-tinted sour raita), quite a few main dishes (with some excellent vegetarian options including tofu) and three excellent dessert choices. On top of that, the quality of the food was excellent. I couldnt put my finger on it but it seemed very carefully prepared and presented. The Butter Chicken was unlike any Ive tried before - very "delicate" spices and mild. And the mango pudding was my favorite! Loved having some Nepali-related dishes for some variety. All the staff looked like young Nepali people and were friendly. Loved the quiet atmosphere of the place and the gentle, old Hindi (I think) songs playing in the background. It was about $10.75 total I think for the buffet, which is slightly higher than some of the other "cheap" places but absolutely, absolutely worth it. Very impressed - will be back again.

I write this review with some tough love, in mind. We went here for dinner the day after Christmas, when evidently everyone in the world goes out to eat, at the same time. They were swamped. A kind, young girl took our order, and warned us it "could take a while." We ordered some garlic naan bread, but it didnt arrive until over an hour later. It took nearly an hour for anything to come to the table, and when our food finally came, it was less than dazzling. We went there specifically for the whole Tandoori Chicken, and we patiently waited for it, but when it finally arrived an hour later, it was a few thighs, legs and wings. Also, I must note that my dinner companion nearly hurled upon eating the white rice they bring to the table, which admittedly tasted bland but smelled, for whatever reason, like stale cigarette smoke. I didnt didnt believe her at first, but upon tasting and smelling it- I had to concur. You guys need to check your rice, and then some. That said: I normally LOVE this place. The staff is awesome, and they generously discounted our check for the above mentioned reasons. The moral of this story is: if everyone else is eating here, go some place else. If its not crowded, sit down and savor the goodness...

This used to be one my favorite Indian restaurants in Salt Lake City. The past few times that I have been in, the service has been slow (this last weekend, we arrived at 6:15pm before the rush and waited 15 minutes at our table before the server came by), the quality of food has not been what it once was, the 4 dishes I had most recently seemed runny and have minimal amounts of chicken in the Tikka masala, the Saag Paneer only had a couple of pieces of cheese and the Vegetable Coconut Kourma was almost entirely peas. I was also disappointed with the Naan. It is normally soft and delicious and this time it was rather dry. They also would not honor a 3rd party coupon for the meal but then gave me a coupon for next time. It was a disappointing experience and it will be a while before I return and I am bummed as I have eaten here 2-3 times a month for quite some time.

Went here for the first time in Friday night and absolutely loved it! Being a vegetarian, its awesome to go somewhere and see that they have TWO PAGES of vegetarian options. I was in heaven. I had the Saag Aloo, which was delicious. The samosas are awesome. There were 3 of us, but an order of samosas only came with 2. They were sweet enough to give us an extra one free of charge! The staff is so friendly and treats you like theyve known you forever. Our waitress gave us a recommendation on our spice levels based on what we like and we were all very happy with our meals. All in all, very good food at a good price with staff that treats you like family.

This place is authentic and a great price for premium food. I enjoyed the chicken Tika masala. There are different levels of spicy and I chose a 6 out of 7. WOW! I was impressed with the spice (it made me sweat) working in unison to enhance the flavour. When you think Indian food, you think spicy but with this place it is flavour with a homemade delicious punch in the taste buds. They dont skimp with their selection. I was served the Naan (bread) and rice included. The setting is comfortable and relaxed, but still has enough light to enjoy the beautiful way the food is prepared. Id give this place 6 stars if possible.

The Kathmandu is the most authentic Nepali Restaurant Ive been to. I have been to many restaurants that claim to be Nepali but have hardly any Nepali food and serve Indian food only(though similar Nepali and Indian food arent the same). Indian food is more popular and known so I understand the need of those restaurants to serve Indian food but to claim to be a Nepali restaurant and not server any Nepali food is outrageous. I stopped at The Kathmandu restaurant on a trip and was impressed by the atmosphere(music, decor etc) and the authenticity of the food.

The food was amazing! I ordered this item off the breads menu that was lamb stuffed naan (cant remember what it was called) and it was really really good. Id go back again just for that. My husband and I ordered the dinner for two instead of entrees and had way more than we could eat. It was a good sampling of the items available which was nice because the length of the menu was a little overwhelming. The meat platter had a Nepalese chicken dish that was really quite good. Spicy, but not too much (a 3 on their scale of 1 to 7).

This place has great food! I had never tried Indian/Nepali food other than homemade, but this is way better! There are so many flavors and spices and you each bite tastes a little bit different. They are very generous with their rice and sauce. I will definitely go again. I do recommend going with someone whose opinion you trust who had been there before because there are so many options! Also, you can never go wrong with Tikka Masala!

Way overrated, overpriced with mediocre lunch buffet. It was $6 for a bottle of beer, $2 to get some honey and $12/person for a mediocre lunch buffet. I have been to many Indian food restaurants all over the Country as well as cooking and eating authentic Indian food. Chicken Tikka Masala and Palak Paneer, two staples of most Indian/Pakistani restaurants (and two of my favorites) were not here. Will not be back.
