I thought Shang-Hai would have been one of the least popular restaurants in Universal City, given its nondescript strip mall location. The lunch crowd proved me wrong, and I found a nice Chinese restaurant run by some very nice women. I typically use the garlic chicken as a measure of the restaurants quality, but Shang-Hai didnt offer this as a lunch special. Instead, I grabbed the Mongolian Chicken because of its offering as a spicy dish - one which I ordered to the spiciest degree, much to the shock of the woman taking my order. They use "X"s on the order ticket to indicate spiciness, and we stood there debating just how many "X"s one ticket could hold. It was five or six, but Im sure the cook got the message either way. The meat portion was simply prepared with chicken, peppers and water chestnuts. The sauce in which it was covered was thick, slightly sweet, and completely chock full of Tien Tsin chiles and seeds, so much so that the sauce took on a completely different consistency. On one hand, so many of the seeds in the sauce were a bit unpleasant, but on the other hand, they brought the spice, so I was kinda stuck. The fried rice was unique with bits of onions, carrot and peas. It was more similar to some of the Mexican saffron rice that Ive had here than traditional fried rice, which is something I enjoyed. The cheese rangoon was fairly standard and slightly under-fried, but the egg drop soup I accidentally received was very nice and full of mushroom. In the end, the restaurant may not be what many people have in mind, but my meal was definitely up to snuff. You could do worse in Universal City than Shang-Hai, curious spelling or not.

We usually love the service and a long time customer. But today my youngest son(two) started acting out when we sat down. Well I picked him up and took him outside for the courtesy of the other guest. When I went back in to try for second time. He acted out again. So thats when I said lets go. My husband had ordered our drinks already. Eli didnt even get I take drunk out of it. When we leave. My husband asks how much do we owe you? The owner started to ring him out and I said to her. You already are going to charge us for drinks? Which we didnt even drink? She said hat she has too!!! I got more upset and walked out. I still am applauded that she charged me $9.31 for drinks. That we couldnt even drink. I felt that she should have been more compassionate and let us go. I love their food and had always been happy with their service. But today just made me aware. That we were just another customer and they needed to charge us. I even called to apologize for my childs behavior and mine as well. She said that she was sorry and would refund me. But I just felt that she should have been more compassionate in my time of need. I am now looking for another good Chinese restrauant to take my crazy family. Its sad.

Pretty good food: I was happy but the gf was not overly enthusiastic, but then she has "more discerning taste" than I. The food was fresh and hot and tasted good. The decor is a hodge podge of different styles of tables and chairs, which I dont care about but the gf thinks makes it look less upscale: normally I wouldnt mention this unless the decor was eye-straining, dangerous, or interesting, but it was a conversation topic at the meal so there you go. It didnt change the taste of the food for me, however, and I like that the restaurant seems more concerned about the food than the decor. So I wouldnt say great food but it is certainly above average. One of the male wait staff seemed preoccupied and came across as surly, while the female who originally greeted us and tried twice to take our order before we were ready (we were slowly agonizing over what to eat) was friendly.

I use to eat here daily until about three months ago. All of a sudden they decided sanitation should go out the door. The guy who cleans off tables was sitting in the dinning room peeling peas, getting up cleaning off dirty plates/tables, and then going right back at it, never washing his hands. I brought it up to the owners husband, he didnt care. In fact he told me I told him to peal the peas. The health department got a call from me, and surprise I was not the only person that had called in on this one issue. Of course many other issues had been called in, he stated theyre doing an undercover investigation because of the high number of issues theyve gotten about this place. Bottom line I went from being a 20+ year customer to never going back in the course of one meal.

My family has eaten there several times and it has always been very good. I recently had a birthday there and had service for 15 people. I think the restaurant is under new management as the food was exceptionally better since the last few times we have gone. The food was fantastic and everything was prepared to everyones liking. I have noticed several bad reviews and ask that everyone that has had a bad experience at Shanghei to try them again as we feel the restaurant service and food has greatly improved . Thank you

I ordered shrimp with black bean sauce and it came with 5 small shrimps. The egg drop soup tasted fishy with the canned shrooms. My wife ordered sesame chicken and Im surprised how this place managed to screw up such a common Chinese dish. The chicken meat was fatty and soggy. Basically our order tasted worst than HEB supermarket Chinese food. I would not come back to this place even if the food was free. I gave it 2 stars simply for the service.

DO NOT EAT HERE! I ordered Beef and vegetables, wonton soup, the chef is so lazy that they just throw the noodle in both, without folding it up as a wonton with pork in the center. I was not sure if the beef was beef, so I took it to go to let my dog do the real test. My dog refuse to eat it as well. And my dog loves chicken and beef. WARNING: I think the owners must really think we as Americans are so uneducated about food.

Ive been eating at this restaurant since I was 3 years old, and its delicious! The rice is cooked to perfection, and the meat is tender and full of flavor, whether its chicken or beef. Vegetables are crisp and delicious. Service is friendly and fast, and their lunch specials are under six dollars! I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants good Chinese food.

Not typically an individual to post negative comments. I had the Kung Pao chicken. Not impressed. Wife had the Shrimp Lo Mein I believe, nothing to write home about. Egg roll was standard to good. Hot and Spicy soup was standard to good. Good service, decent atmosphere. Maybe I just had a few not so amazing plates. Dont think I will return.

The food is good. The service is good. But the prices are great. Weve been eating here for years and we are well pleased with the consistency of the food and friendliness of the staff. Did I mention the prices are great? Yes, you can find better food. But not at these prices. This is a very good neighborhood restaurant.
