2 things upset both me and the fiance this evening on our date night. First we were told there would be a 10 to 15 min wait to be seated which we thought would be fine. After about 20 min i went to speak to the host who was taking names to ask how close we were to being seated. She replied that she gave the other list to another host. She then turned and started talking to 2 ladies just enterig the restaurant, I overheard the ladies ask how long the wait for the 2 of them would be and the host said she can seat them right now. I was shocked and said excuse me but we have been waiting 20 minutes why would you seat 2 people just walking in? She then replied that someone would come and seat us so we then waited a few more minutes then we where seated. Needless to say the 2 who walked in 20 min after us had allready been seated. We then ordered chips and queso and our sanwhiches. The sandwiches where priced around 11 dollars and had no sides. These in my book were worth half that! My fiance ordered the gilled chicken sandwich which when it came out with my club looked good however after her 2nd bite she asked me if it looked done. It was PINK. I couldnt believe how something like chicken could be that under cooked. We sent it back and told them not to worry about making another. Then to top everything off a manager (had a red shirt on) stops by and says that the pink was some tendon that was on the end of the breast and that the meat was safe to eat. Then told us the tendon is cut off to make the chicken salad but not on the chicken breast sandwich... we didnt argue at all and said ok but my fiance and i looked at each other and laughed because we both know what tendon looks like and this was far from it. We will never be going back. I would suggest some better restaurants for that kind of money like huisach! We have never had a bad experience there!

Came here for Dinner on the 26th from out of town. The ambiance of this place is nice, it is a very cute outdoorsy type restaurant. I expected a fabulous meal from reading all of the reviews and seeing the outside of this place. Wait time was not bad to be seated, but once we were seated (too close for comfort to another couple I might add) the fun began. Our waitress was very nice and eager to help Ill give her that, but we did wait 10 minuted for a coke and a bottled beer. She came back and asked if we were ready to order and I had to remind her about the drinks. We ordered the spinach dip was a bit on the GARLIC side, but still really good. I ordered the NY strip, which was covered in gristle, I had to cut a big chunk off the sides and it was swimming in its own blood, like they let it rest on the plate they served it on..The round cut potatos / chips/ /fries? ... im not sure where they were going with this but either make them crispy or not.. I was very confused and they had no seasoning on them at all. It just tasted like frialator grease.... My husband ordered the catch of they day (blackened snapper) he said it was really good, but we just thought it was funny that she asked how he wanted that cooked... (Lol Thoroughly!) The ideal range is between 125°F to 140°F for seafood, luckily it came out good. We also ordered dessert to go, some sort of Jack Daniels elaborate pie dish.. which when you get it to go just meant a piece of pie in a to go container... Definitely not worth the 86$ we paid, but at least the place looked nice

So heres the thing with the Gristmill - its an institution to Gruene. Was the food great? Not really. Service? Could have been better. Good place to bring your family for a fun meal? Definitely. We went on a rainy night and opted for the patio under cover (which it definitely was not), rather than wait an hour for inside. The girl who led us to our table and then seemed annoyed that we asked her to wipe down our rain soaked table and benches, said she was shocked that anyone had come out to eat there tonight, since on rainy nights they usually close down and let the staff go early. Thanks for the tip. The waitress was pretty young (as was most of the staff) and really couldnt make any recommendations for food or otherwise. My husband ordered a dos equis and she asked if he wanted salt and a lime (of course!). For some reason, he received a dos equis bottle that was covered in wet, dripping salt and had a lime wedge shoved in the top. Definitely a first for me at a restaurant. The onion rings batter was tasteless. I ordered the cheeseburger which was okay, not bad but not great. Dessert made me wish I saved the calories. It reminded me of a worse version of chilis or outback. I feel like this place needs to step it up but theyve really got a monopoly on the area, so I guess not, which is unfortunate.

Weve been coming to the Gristmill when visiting the TX Hill Country for almost 30 years, and its always a relaxed and wonderful experience; however this visit was less than perfect. This year we were celebrating our sons 16th birthday & had brought three of his friends along. Although our wait was 1 hour, my husband & I enjoyed the live music and a drink under the trees while the boys walked around Gruene. The food was good, although the size of the chicken fried steak was significantly smaller than the earlier years. Carlton, our waiter, was good and did his best with such a crowded Labor Day weekend crowd. We would HIGHLY recommend that you NOT sit on the lower patio near the wait station though. This is where we were seated, and the smell of sewer was unbearable at times, so I ended up only eating half of my meal because the smell made me feel queezy. We all covered our mouths & noses each time the sewer smell would waft through. It was a disappointing way to celebrate our only childs 16th, but Im sentimental about the place so do not want to "dis" them with a lower rating.

Came here as a kid in the early 2000s,loved it then. I remembered the chicken fried steak was great. Fast foward to march of 2016. Attended a training in san macros and picked up a class mate that had never been to Texas. I told her lets go to gruene. Was suprised to see how much it had grown in 10 + years. Like a miniature Fredericksburg. Told her lets go to the grist mill. Didnt know it had grown into a huge outdoor waitroom with a cash bar and live entertainment. Typically it was a 45 minute wait. We walked thru town and enjoyed all the shops. Came back waited 10 more minutes, and some short girl had trouble writing my name on the board. We were promptly seated. She ordered a ribeye and I had my old faithful. Chicken fried steak. Hadnt changed one bit. Was just a great meal all around. My friend was very impressed with the food as well. Waitress was so polite and talkative, made for a nice evening. Keep up the good work grist mill. Ps. Yall had the bay windows open and the fans on inside. Not only was it very comfortable eating weather, but no bugs.
