Im a little hesitant to write a great review of this place because I know that will only make it more popular and even harder to get a seat, but I have to. They deserve it! Weve been vacationing at HHI for a very long time, and have been going to the Salty Dog since before I can remember. Its probably the best causal food on the island. We went last night and despite torrential downpours, hundreds of people were lined up waiting for a seat. They dont take reservations, so if youre thinking of dining there during the peak season, you might want to send someone ahead to put your name in and get a pager before the rest arrive, like someone who may want to do a little shopping beforehand. They do have a large outdoor bar which is good for the wait, but the wait can be epic. We were told to expect two hours when we got there at 5:30, and we were actually seated at just before 8pm. Despite being totally swamped, they brought our meal quickly, and it did NOT disappoint. Blackened Wahoo was the catch of the day and it was worth the wait. The second I closed the bill jacket on a handful of $20s and rose to put on my jacket, the buss staff pounced on our table and cleared it with such verocity the kids wanted to stay and watch them. They can handle the crowds, for sure. Parking kind of sucks, lots of cars making spots of their own. The could definitely improve on that a little.

Salty Dog was meh. The prices are outweigh the benefits. To give you an idea I spent $12 (11 dollar burger and they charge $.79 for cheese add more $ if you want bacon). It was dry, well, and tasteless. The burger taisted like something youd expect a noobie griller to cook up. The service was less than desireable. The waitress liked to talk it up with certain tables and other servers. The only nice thing about this location is the music playing outside the restraunt. There really isnt that much of a view like the people say above/below. If anything the place smells pretty bad and the view is meh. We sat right next to the window but youre looking out at a swamp. A smelly one at that. You can go up the road to the lighthouse and have much better views. The other drawback is it costs $5 to go back into this area and other areas around there. You get a day pass for the $5 dollars but it was barely worth while. Youre paying $5 to gain access to overpriced stores, overpriced/mediocore food, a nice lighthouse, the possibility of riding a boat to go dolphin watching (worth the $15), and a free kids entertainer at certain times of the day.

My husband and I were super excited to experience this iconic establishment. However, this was not a good dining experience. We arrived around 5 pm and were told that our wait for a table would be around 45 minutes. Which is OK but there seemed to be many empty tables. I understand that reservations might have been made for these tables, but find it frustrating to wait for a table when there are visibly empty ones right there. But I digress... We got our alert for a table and were seated. And waited. And waited. And waited. In hind sight, we should have just left. Our waitress took our drink order. And we waited. And waited until our order was taken. I ordered a cup of gumbo and a caesar salad and my husband the shrimp and grits. The gumbo was great and the shrimp and grits-stellar. My salad was horrible- overdressed and the croutons were stale. The waitress offered to have a new salad made but by this point, I just wanted to leave. The managers were informed and apologized. I just wanted a good salad. I guess you cant get that at the Salty Dog Cafe.

SUPER PICKEY PERSON HERE...... The sweet tea was great, the Margaritas were excellent for their cost, The hushpuppies that I have heard about so much, well nothing but sugar in the batter... WHERES THE BEEF. They had no green onions, no texture, no seasoning and tasted like they were made from funnel cake mix, if not for the EXCELLENT tasting cocktail sauce it would have been a downhill experience on the hushpuppies for me. The $6.00 plus hot dogs for the kids,, just way overpriced. The soups are awesome, the shrimp salad hoagie was excellent. The $5.00 price for admission into the Sea Pines resort where the restaurant is located.....well worth the $5 bucks spent, the scenery is worth the money just a beautiful spot.......out of 4 fingers and 1 thumb. I will give it 4 fingers...if the hushpuppies would have been ISLAND STYLE and or seasoned, this Salty Dog cafe would have received the THUMBS UP AWARD, from the HI HO Low Country boys from the great state of Georgia..... Its worth the trip and dont forget to grab one of their cool T-Shirts..

Maybe I went at the wrong time for wrong reason, but I had a pretty bad experience. We went for dinner, the roads to get to this location are extremely dark at night and on top of that you have to pay $6 to get there (which is okay in the day where there are some more things to see in the area). My wife ordered the jambalaya pasta which had chicken that tasted weird and one piece that did not seem very cooked. Since I was in the low country I had been craving a Low Country Boil. I ordered Jakes low country boil and was extremely disappointed. The corn that was presented was not cooked at all, Potatoes were underdone and very watery for some reason, Sausage was dried out like it had been sitting.the crab legs had been sitting for awhile based on taste, texture, and overall heat. I have to say worst low country boil Ive ever had. The Crab Shack in Tybee Island , GA had the best and.now Im wishing I had waited to go there. I guess the lesson is to only come here for drinks. Though Ive been here for lunch and it was good

My wife and I visited the Salty Dog Cafe this past weekend. Initially we were seated in a dark lonely corner at the back of the restaurant. Upon request were relocated to an unoccupied table overlooking the marina. The menu is dominated by sea food lovers staples (salmon, catch of the day, deep fried fish plate, etc...) and has a few options for those who arent (chicken sandwich, burgers, chicken Alfredo, etc). I can understand that some reviewers were underwhelmed. Some only include a grilled fish and nothing else and cost as much as the better entrees, ask a your waitress. I ordered the chef special (it varies) and it was excellent. My wife ordered chicken Alfredo which was on par with general Italian restaurants in price and taste. A little more pricey than I felt it was worth but most unique island restaurants are a bit pricey. A couple can reasonably spend as little as $50 to $80 a visit. Overall I was pleased and it was worth a visit but I wouldnt put it in my top 10 favorite restaurants.

The worst service my wife and I ever encountered at a restaurant. When we entered into the Salty Dog Cafe in Hilton Head,SC we were not greeted at all. My wife had to tell the hostess itll be two. What I picked up was the look that we received from the hostess up front at the door. Oh it must be the shock to them seeing a white female with a black male. This kind of stuff is still well alive in 2011 in great American (HATE). We waited approx 15 min to be seated then nobody wanted to serve us, not surprised at that action. After 10 mins of seating there finally another hostess came over to our table and got our drink and food order. That hostess did not have a problem with helping the customer but the one who sat us did. The service after that was ok after our waitess approached the table and said shell be taking care of us. If youre interracial couple do yourself a favor and do not visit Salty Dog Cafe in Hilton Head,SC go to Steamer instead they have great service and a very very very nice staff.
