This was our fourth dining experience at Red Fish in Bluffton, SC. Our first experience went well and we thought the food was very good and the service passable. Friends requested to join us on two other occasions and the fourth was for a family birthday celebration. On our second visit, we all requested our fish entrees be cooked medium. We received undercooked fish (practically raw) and of course had to wait for our waiter to come back to our table to check on us....which was so long we had to search for him and subsequently waited another 10-15 minutes for our entree to arrive properly cooked. On our third visit, we did not receive a bread basket nor was our candle lighted. Our table was unattended to, water glasses not refilled and table left with extra glasses and silverware...very cluttered. Our most recent visit was very disappointing.......our requested table for a family celebration was not honored. I was told that another party had reserved prior to us but when I had originally called, this was never mentioned even though we have been repeat customers. Again, my fish was extremely undercooked...couldnt cut through it....Mahi Mahi should be white and flaky not gray and tough from not being fully cooked. Of course I had to wait again while it was sent back. No bread served and water glasses left empty. Red Fish should be ashamed with the prices they charge to employ such untrained wait staff and front desk employees. As far as the chef goes, it appears that he doesnt understand that some fish need to be fully cooked while other types may be served as sushi. A big disappointment and waste of our money.

This restaurant was a favorite of mine, unfortunately , it has in my opinion gone down hill. Dinner last week was fair, so I tried lunch a few days later to see if any better. No such luck it was worse. I had to send back food. Seafood not fresh. Asked if there was a new cook? Yes, been there about 3-4 months. I used to see the Restaurant full and on a Friday night only two other tables. My concern is business is down and no longer getting fresh ingredients . I do not mind paying the price if the food is good. In addition to freshness of food being a concern, I felt that the experience was no longer the gourmet food i loved to enjoy over the last 3 years? Hope it returns to the food I so enjoyed, because it is a lovely spot for location and view to spend time at.

Likes. Fish-was prepared well. I had seabass and my wife had flounder. Staff-pleasant and courteous. Dislikes...for the price and marketing one would expect farm fresh food. Though I didnt go to the kitchen and check, I am confident my goat cheese salad had canned beets. Fresh beets are a dark purple.. Almost black, not pink. Second, my wifes fish came with what seemed to be powdered potatoes. Served in "scoop" fashion as in cafeteria style. Anyone who has had real mashed potatoes would recognize the difference in texture. While the above probably makes me sound like a pompous prick...the bottom line is that for the price if the food - one should not have to even QUESTION whether it was fresh ingredients. Net/net we were left dissatisfied.

If youre a foodie, this is a good option. The atmosphere is dark with "candle-like" lighting so it creates a really nice feel. The average entree runs $15-30. Also being a wine retailer you can explore their shelves of wine and pick a bottle - they try to keep 1 of each bottle cold in the back they can bring out for you to drink with your meal. I got a lobster macaroni which was out of this world. I got it as a side item and wish I had gotten a double portion as my main meal. Several people got the "Red Fish" entree which was fish covered in BBQ sauce. Overall, we werent very impressed with this dish. However the lamb sliders were FANTASTIC. You can also purchase wine at retail prices here.

We arrived for the early bird dinner and were treated to excellent service. Our group enjoyed 4 different choices from the early bird menu which included a complimentary glass of wine. Although no substitutions are allowed according to the menu the waitress offered to substitute a pinot for the chardonnay which sometimes gives our friend a headache. The food was excellent including the salmon which most restaurants seem to over cook. We were still there for the first set of a fine jazz trio. The atmosphere is inviting and warm. It was quiet even when crowded. Excellent value and a pleasant evening. We have dined there before and will return.

My husband and I decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary at Redfish on a recent visit to Hilton Head Island. Wed been there several times before but were surprised at the disappointing experience we had. The food was fine but the service was terrible. We were rushed through our meal so quickly we could barely relax. It wasnt even crowded and the waitress was impersonal and speedy running away from our table with great haste. She would ask if we needed anything and take off before a syllable could escape our lips. In addition they give you a very stingy glass of wine. Not a welcoming place anymore.

We were just there tonight (6/16/09) and I had the Cobie fish special - one of the best meals ever. It came with black beans which I dont normally like but they really worked with this dish. If you get a glass of wine go for the pinot gris. For an appetizer the fried clams were really good. The salmon dish, asparagus/tomatoes, and lobster mac & cheese were also good. For dessert the peach/blackberry tart was excellent. Dress is "dressy casual" which is basically business casual for guys and maybe a sundress for ladies. Overall a top notch dining experience.

My wife and I had the Calamari appetizer. Entree for her was shrimp and grits and crab cakes for me. Calamari was crisp, tender, and not oily, but the entrees were disappointingly overwrought. The crab cakes were gummy from too much mixing and had the slight ammonia flavor of old crab. Shrimp and grids were positively TeX Mex with overpowering flavors of cumin and cilantro. Not awful, but a far cry from the original, humbly purist roots of both dishes. Good selection of wines and pleasant decor helped dispel the gustatory impression we were at Red Lobster.

We were disappointed in this resaurant...and with so many in the area, felt we wasted a night of our 3-day trip. Little Venice was soooo much better. Redfishs outdoor dining faces their parking lot and the street, no view. The decor inside is empty and the space is limited. The food runners give better service, but their waiting staff is horrible. The presentation of the food is better than the actual taste or quality. Desserts were unimpressive.... and despite the "early bird special," the overrall price was still pricey.

Have been a resident of Hilton Head Island for 25 years and what ashame that a 1 week tourist complained about my having a cigarette after dinner (great ribs) on the patio. I purposely moved as far away as possible as not to offend someone, however i was asked by the establishment to go further to the parking lot to smoke. Will the tourist support this island in the dead of the winter or will I?? Not very likely that I will patronize a restutant thay supports a weekend warrior over a lifetime resident.
