This is my favorite coffeeshop in Pittsburgh, if not the world. Its extremely relaxing and casual, mixing older elements of the building with trendy art prints. Theres even a gas fireplace! Dogs are welcome inside, so be cautious if you are allergic to canines. The baristas are extremely friendly and helpful. Im yet to encounter one that neglects their duties. The drinks are varied and delicious. I dont have much experience with straight coffee, but they appear to have a good selection of Intelligentsia coffee. The mixed and blended drinks are good and there are also teas and miscellaneous drinks. (Im a big fan of the ginger plum herbal iced tea.) Big Dog has a wide variety of tempting baked goods, but be advised that the website is out of date; they no longer serve soup or meals.

I live in the Southside and frequent this coffee shop whenever humanly possible. The coffee is perfect, every single time. There isnt a large selection of desserts or sandwiches, but what they do have is tasty and fresh. The atmosphere is my favorite. Even though the place is only a few years old, it has the look and feel of a neighborhood coffee shop that has been here for decades, yet it is modern at the same time. It is hard to achieve such balance, but they have. The music is always a mix of hip, smooth, soulful, jazzy, or sometimes classical music which is nice. It is a more quiet vibe coffee shop and isnt a place for small and/or noisy children...another thing I like about it.

My only complaint is that they turned me into a coffee drinker! Lol They helped me understand what I like and are always ready to answer questions...and are very knowledgeable. Ive known many of the baristas for years, and the owners since 2008, and consider them to be great people. They are a great local family serving up some of the best coffee in Pgh, off the busy street in a unique and cozy place. Their coffee drinks are not pre-made and the coffee is very high quality from Intelligentsia who is a well known roaster promoting sustainability and fair trade coffee. Good stuff!

Big Dog, I will miss you! A couple of friends and I decided to bring our children this time and we were kicked out. The barista seemed personally offended that she had to endure being around children. Our kids were a little louder than the lap-top patrons up front, but they were happily coloring and chattering away, basically doing what kids do. The barista referred to our kids coloring books and markers as "debris" and the children themselves as "fire hazards". If youre looking for a library-type setting to work on your thesis, this is the place! Dont bring your family.

I love the atmosphere of this place. Its really relaxing and easy to get work done. If you come on a good day there may be puppies around to pet since this place allows you to bring your dogs inside. The only downfall I had was the WiFi was not working and when it was working it was really slow. That made it hard to get things done that I needed my computer for. Other than that if you find yourself in South Side I would definitely come here for a cup of coffee, and they also have an oatmeal bar that is really delicious!

A unique little coffee shop in a house with quaint outdoor seating and tasty goodies and good coffee. My only complaint was that the service left a bad taste in my mouth. I havent been here since December 2015 because of it! The baristas had placed their things very close to where a table was and when we politely asked them if we could scoot it down a little they blatantly rolled their eyes and complained about it to each other...

What a great place! Warm and welcoming vibe, where most of the customers are clearly regulars (i.e., the barista is already making their coffee even before they order). I got a delicious caramel latte -- made with REAL CARAMEL, not fake syrup-- and a cranberry oat bar, which is like oatmeal and granola, but in the most beautiful way. Lovely place to spend an hour. Ill definitely be back!

Always walked by Big Dog coffee when I was in the South Side but never went in. Finally stopped by today and was blown away! Beautiful interior - very warm and welcoming. The place is also incredibly clean (even the bathrooms!) and the employees were nice. Had the best macchiato of my life; it was even better than the espresso I had in Italy. Will definitely come back here again!

Serving intelligentsia coffee, the place is decent. The atmosphere is nice and it feels like you could spend a lot of time in there. The coffee was okay, I got a macchiato and it was bigger than Id expect, more like a cortado. The pour over I got later was a little watery, but okay. The staff didnt seem terribly knowledgeable or friendly, which is always disappointing.

I love this shop and the feel I get from it. For those of you troubled by the "water in my iced coffee" comment: Thats just how you prepare cold brew. It starts as a concentrate which needs to be diluted with water/ice before serving. The concentrate stays tastier MUCH longer than the dilution, so most shops leave it as such for the barista to dilute. :) Cheers!

wow. wonderful coffee. friendly informed effective staff. tremendous breakfast oatmeal bar. good cookies and pastries. Three different seating zones, each with a cool vibe - front room, back room, patio. Wifi. Two bike racks and a dog-leash post out front, bucket of dog treats inside the door. This is just what a friendly coffee shop is supposed to be.

Unique off-Carson spot for a good cup of coffee or espresso (my go-to) and a cozy chair. Friendly staff and patrons with a local feel and artsy vibe. If all the spots are taken inside, check out the outdoor seating. Great spot to knock out some work or school on a sunny afternoon. Parking can be a pain, but it comes with the area.

This place has an aura about it that is so calming to the soul. Without a doubt the best coffee I had in Pittsburgh. The place has operated as a bakery/cafe since the late 1800s but only recently changed hands from the original family. The new proprietors are upholding the tradition of proving great food, coffee and service.

Coffee was alright, but incredibly overpriced. Not to mention the cocky attitude from the barista. I specifically ordered my latte with soy, due to a lactose intolerance, and received an earful after having to correct my order mid-creation. My advice? Skip Big Dog and look elsewhere.

Coffee is some of the best Ive ever experienced. Only con is the WiFi they have is Greenlight wireless, its slow at times and sometimes when I stream music on my laptop or phone it lags... but its dealable. This is my number 1 study spot and have recommended it to all my friends.

Hands down the best cafe in the area and up there in the rest of the city. It has a great ambience for the quiet reader, the budding entrepreneurs, the sometimes "obnoxiously loud" working folk from American Eagle :). They truly have great quality coffee and baristas who care.

I love Big Dog.Sometimes I leave for work an hour early just so I can sit and savor my coffee at Big Dog. The coffee is superb, the atmosphere is fantastic-- they even have an actual wood-burning fireplace with an actual fire inside it in the winter. I recommend it to everyone.
