Heres the deal. South Street Diner is a diner. On South Street. If youre going there expecting Tavern on the Green, youre just stupid. It really is the only place of its kind in Philly proper. Sure, there are other late night diners around town, but this is the only one that is relatively central to those of us living in Queen Village/Center City/South Philly etc... Its 24 hours, with a reasonably expansive menu. Its priced moderately. They have RELIABLE free internet access (Im writing you from their connection now while streaming on Netflix.) The staff isnt a bunch of shiny happy clowns, but they are never outright rude either. Again, this is all kind of standard diner stuff. The place is clean, its fairly inviting decor wise, and to their credit they recently renovated the bathrooms in a big way. Theyre actually NICE. And there are a ton of eateries in Philly that are super fancy but have filthy, dilapidated restrooms. The bottom line is that South Street Diner is a DINER. Diner food, diner people, diner atmosphere....but on the higher end in terms of food, price, experience et. al. Recent meal: 1 coffee 1 unsweeted iced tea "Hungry Man" breakfast: 3 chocolate chip pancakes, home fries, toast, bacon and scrambled eggs total cost (WITH TIP): $20.00 - my only gripe here is that I added a pancake to the meal (normally comes with two) and the added pancake cost $3.00 - thats kind of insane.

Never before have I felt violated by a diner. Comfortable decor disguises the fact that nobody in the place has any idea what theyre doing. Our waitress set the scene by dropping our menus on the floor, not writing our order down, and taking 5 minutes just to get us water. My french onion soup never arrived, my "hungry man" arrived with no bacon or toast, and my girlfriends Eggs Benedict lacked the advertised English muffin. Our waitress didnt check back with us until we were almost finished eating. When I asked her if my bacon was coming, she returned a moment later with a soggy, cold plate of the nastiest bacon Ive ever seen. Even the pancakes and eggs were nasty! How do you mess up basic breakfast food? Sidenote, the table next to us never got their bacon either. I also reminded her about my soup, which was flavorless and so late I didnt even want it anymore. The rest of our food wasnt great to begin with, but the staffs incompetence ruined whatever chance remained for our meal to be even slightly enjoyable. Total waste of money.

City sample platter with pancakes eggs and sausage. I was not satisfied with my pancakes, the plate was hot but the pancakes was very cold. I also ordered iced tea as well as a muffin and didnt get neither. When it was time to speak to the manager, her name was Lee and she was very rude when I wanted to discuss the problems with my food and billing. Also apon asking her first and last name she told a group of friends and I " You dont need it". Lee then proceed to walk away to get the receipt. When she came back she through the receipt on the table NOT in anyones hands. I hate this place. The food is trash. The service is deplorable. The manager is a crusty angry crustacean who has no people skills and doesnt look her customers in the eyes. Our sever was nice. MY GRITS WERE WATERY WITH SLICED CHEESE DO NOT COME HERE.... but if you do ask for Shaun (if thats his name)

Went here for breakfast before with my mother, & it was great. Went for lunch today with my mother, & the mashed potatoes were horrible. They had a sweet but sour taste to them. I asked the waitress we had (who seemed nice, but didnt tell us her name) if there was anything in the mashed potatoes she said "no, why do you like it?" I said "no." She then asked me if I would like to have french fries instead I said "yes", & she quickly brought me lukewarm fries that were a bit soggy..I just hope I wasnt given someone elses fries that they didnt finish, that nothing was done to the our food, & that we werent given old ass leftover food..Oh the joy of eating in public places..

Went at 10PM because it was convenient and I had been travelling all day. Decided to get a cheeseteak and a cup of soup. The soup (clam chowder) was luke-warm and tasted like it was out all day. The cheesesteak arrived not more than 5 minutes after I got the soup. Let me tell you, that was the worst cheesesteak of my life. Tasted like it had been microwaved, the provolone on the bun was still in squares and not even melted, and to top it off they put marinara sauce on it. I took two bites and asked for the check. Never going back here.

On a crisp Sunday morning, my fellow acquaintances and I strolled in to the South Street Diner looking like zero carb or calorie snack. As we only wanted to feel welcomed, we found a sock in the booth, but despite that greeting, the food was delicious!! Yet, there was small particles floating in the water, which me and my amigos flabbergasted over. Overall, South Street Diner is the place to be ladies and gentleman -- have a great day!

Waitress had no personality, didnt tell us the $2.45 sodas were NOT free refills, yelled across the diner to ask a co worker if a customer left a tip on their card which is horribly rude. We ordered 2 grilled cheese sandwiches with fries, which were acceptable at best. When the check came it showed the barges as a la carte, so we were annoyed she didnt ask if we wanted them "deluxe" which is ON the menu and cheaper. Will never return.

I live for this diner. Even with their menu changes in the last few years, I still always come back for more. Its one of my go-to dining destinations in Philadelphia. The food is always cooked well and presented beautifully. Everything Ive ever ordered from burgers to seafood is consistently great tasting and affordable. The dining atmosphere is clean and pleasant and the customer and overall service is great.

This place has new ownership; and theyve both cleaned the place up and seem to have improved the food. The entrance is no longer a confusing mess like under the prior ownership, either. Had a burger, soup, salad and fries. The fries were the big, floppy kind that are more mushy than crispy; but otherwise the meal was on the better end of what you can expect from a diner. Ill be going back.

Went to get some breakfast and the sign said please wait to be seated. Proceeded to wait 5 minutes for a waitress in the back to throw two menus on a table and said, "sit here." She seemed highly annoyed. Then we waited another 10 minutes with no service at all. Food looked good, service was horrible and they didnt seem to care that they had customers. Never going back.

We were seated fast but our never showed up. She checked in with other people, butt never even brought us water. My fiance had to go to the counter to ask if someone was going to take our order. The food came fast, but the waitress had an attitude. The food wasnt even that good. I dont see myself gong back there.

The good is terrible. Once a great diner it has slipped into h plate mediocrity. I live less than a block away and would rather not eat at all than eat here. Ownership transferred a few years ago and the heart fell out of this place. Tasteless, style as sub-par food. Even the pancakes are bad. How do you do that?
