We made a special trip from the burbs to Tamarind after reading several reviews and were very disappointed. The food service was fast... too fast, and I suspect based on what we ate it was not prepared to order. We ordered 2 appetizers, Fish Cakes and Crispy Angels. The Fish Cakes were 4 meatball sizes deep fried rubbery balls that tasted nothing like fish and seemed to have been cooked long before we ordered them. The Crispy Angels were okay. Our entrees were attractive but almost inedible because of the intense heat/spice. On a scale of 1-7 for heat, we were told that a 2 would be mild but it was not. The sauces were just not prepared as they were described and the freshness did not seem to be there. Perhaps these sauces were pre-made, too. The only part of the meal that was not burning hot was the rice. I ordered Salmon Chu Chee and my husband ordered Pad Woonsen. Neither of us were able to finish the meal. When we presented our problem to the servers, they were less than helpful and did not offer to get us food we could eat.

Ive been going to Tamarind for over 12 yrs now and 10 yrs ago I actually set a reservation there where I proposed to my fiance, whom is currently my wife. They set it up so that when I came in I gave them the bottle of wine (its BYOB in there) with the ring inside the bag that had the wine in there. They took the bottle in the back to CHILL for over 10 mins (while waiting for our entrée). They brought the entrée out with the bottle of wine which also had the box with the ring beside it! She was totally surprised & extremely happy! Still to this day, thats our favorite restaurant place to eat! Im headed there now (after getting our feet and her nails done! I LOVE TAMARIND! THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT & I ALWAYS GET THE HOTTEST SPICINESS.

Ive read these reviews and have to laugh at the irony of people that go to a Thai restaurant and complain about it being spicy or say the fish tastes too much like fish! Ive been to Tamarind many times and have always found it to be fantastic. No the place isnt glitzy and shiny. If youre looking for that go elsewhere. But for awesome food and service, this is the place. The red ginger curry is to die for! The prices are extremely reasonable. The owner offered to walk us to our car with her umbrella because it was raining! We once got a free desert because we couldnt decide which flavor to order. Quiet, relaxed atmosphere, great food, good service, reasonable prices, generous helpings.....whats not to like???

This used to be my favorite Thai restaurant, but I was in there on the 4th of July and the service was horrible. The table next to us wasnt cleaned our entire meal, we ended up putting our appetizer plates there since the waitress didnt take them . We had to ask for menus, water and just walked up to pay since we never received the check long after we were done eating. The waitress said sorry every time she came to the table, but didnt improve her service. They seemed more concerned with takeout orders then providing service to those in the restaurant. The food was good per the normal, but the service was a major turn off. I was very disappointed as I have been coming here for years.

Ive sampled a number of pad thais far and wide, but have not yet found another that has the flavor like Tamarind. let me take you through a typical pad thai meal at Tamarind. take a deep breath as the scent of chili and stir fried noodles rises from your plate. mix in fresh bean sprouts and squeeze in some lemon. take a bite of the tender noodles with the dry, oiled, spicy flavor that only a good pad thai has. the complex flavors of the savory/chili sauce immerse your palette while the neutral flavors of lemon and bean sprouts trail to balance out the dish. bring some white wine or locally brewed yards pale ale to enjoy with phillys pad thai perfection.

Best thai food tasted.. we are indians and so know detailing when it comes to spices and herbs in any food. Tamarind serves dishes that have rich and fresh spices and herbs unlike other joints.. the food is served freshly prepared and within minutes… great service unlike typical snobbish joints where waiters and staff dont smile.. the waitresses at tamarind are truly asian, genuine smiles and laughter !!!

You should definitely try the fried calamari! it was so good and the sauce was amazing. This was small and quaint, we enjoyed both the atmosphere and our meals. We tried the angry salmon and the red curry with beef and they were both excellent. I am not an expert on Thai food but I would definitely recommend Tamarind! BYOB is also a great addition.

Tamarind has become my go-to place for Thai food in Center City. Id love to bottle the brown sauce in the Vegetable Radna. Although on South St., its near the east end and away from the chaos of the rest of the street. My only complaint is there are too many fried appetizers.

Tom sum salad w papaya was pretty good, could have used some more kick. Whole redsnapper was fresh, tasty, but drowning in sauce (and not that big for the price). Pad thai was soggy and missing that cilantro, lemony zest. Not bad overall, but well be looking for better.

Staff are friendly and helpful. Foods are tasty, many choices, reasonable price. But Tom Yum can be make it better (I think). Recommend to make a reservation in advance due to limited tables. Parking can be easy to find on the street. Definitely will come back again.

Food was really good but service was not on part with the taste. We ordered a dish after asking the price but we got a check with almost twice the price we were told. We were a bit let down after that. We will not return.

Tamarind is my favorite Thai restaurant outside of Thailand. I hate to be considered the "regular customer" but Ive been there so much they now know who I am. The service is wonderful and the food is out of this world.

What makes a good Thai restaurant is first, is the chef Thai and how about the owner. How else would the food taste the way it should. Does anyone know? This is my criteria for dining in a Thai restaurant.

We got the Pad Thai (medium spice level) & sautéed ginger curry to share for two. It was amazing, so delicious and perfect to share. Really affordable for Thai food. My favorite Thai in philly so far!

Best pad thai weve ever had. Nothing else comes close. All the other dishes weve had have also been excellent, but boy oh boy, that pad thai is heavenly.
