This place is a bit of a St. Johns institution and Ive eaten here a handful of times over the past 5 years. Most recently I met a friend for brunch. Theyve expanded, which is nice considering how packed the front room used to get. I wish they would have used that remodel to update the decor. The artwork is pretty bad - a lot of old, faded prints from the 80s that are beyond being considered ironic in the context. They would really benefit from allowing local artists to showcase their work. The service has always been good here with very friendly staff, so thats a strong point. Though I do think they are overcharging for the food that comes out of the kitchen. The food is good, but not great. Its uninspired fare that comes to the table with a hint of being assembled instead of created. And the portions, for the price, are quite small. I ordered the corned beef hash, which arrived as a cute mound of salty melange mostly obscured by the homefries and toast. My friend ordered a scramble, which was similarly portioned. Thankfully, his 3 year old couldnt finish her pancake, so I didnt leave hungry. Now, I dont need to leave uncomfortably stuffed but if youre going to charge $11 for a brunch special it needs to be either much better quality or much more substantial. There are some places in town where you can have both. Thats where youll find me having brunch next time.

My girlfriend and I popped into grab a quick bite to eat. We were met with the slowest and most complacent service I have experienced in Portland in some time. We ordered a chicken quesadilla, a side salad with balsamic dressing as well as a bowl of potato leek soup. After 30 minutes of waiting we hailed the waitress to ask her if there was an issue due to the time that had passed. She said she would check into it. She went to he kitchen window where she had a lengthy chat with the cooking staff. She returned and told us that the quesadilla was on the grill. Another 15 minutes went by before we received our food which she assured us that was not forgotten. Ive made my fair share of quesadillas in my life and never ha melted cheese and chicken taken nearly an hour. The soup was ice cold, not Luke warm, ice cold. The salad was covered in balsamic reduction...not dressing. And to top it all off the chicken tasted like cinnamon. Needless to say our attempts to enjoy a quick meal were thwarted by the unskilled and uncaring staff. But on the bright side its a beautiful day and I get to go try another restaurant because we are clearly still hungry.

Wonderful place. The food is delicious. I love the care that went into the food. I loved that there was not the normal (and frankly boring) have-it-your-way approach: they made good choices for you (as all my favorite restaurants do!). You dont choose from fifteen varieties of bread for your toast: you get very good whole wheat. There isnt a tray of the four basic Smuckers jellies on your table; rather you get a jar of jam from one or another variety of raspberries, specially ordered from some WillyWonkian place in Seattle. Eat in the garden if you can. Its beautiful. And if you are curious about any of the plants, ask the proprietors. They care for it all themselves, and are happy to talk about all the wonderful varieties of plants (flowering and non) that make this a special place.

Have been coming here since it opened. St Johns was always a wasteland before (as far as food goes). My business is nearby, so I go there when I can. Always great food, always hi quality-fresh ingredients, always friendly. You should eat here! Try it in the summer while the garden is open. If you want to impress a guest? this is the place to take them. PS there is usually no line on weekdays.

Service was non existent despite a pretty empty restaurant. Order got screwed up initially so while they remade one omelette the other two sat under a food warmer and were served luke warm. Despite the setbacks two of the three were very tasty. I would agree with the previous potion size comments - 2 eggs any style $8.

My husband and I come here almost every weekend for breakfast. Jamie and the rest of the staff are so friendly and the food is wonderful. And we love to relax on the patio! Theres a reason why people are lined up on the sidewalk. But have a cup of coffee and enjoy the wait - I promise its worth it.

Overpriced for what you get. One of the waitresses is rude too. Food is average at best. Would give it 2 stars but $12 for average breakfast and super bland potatoes that tasted like they were made over an hour ago is no good. Our experience wasnt much better the first time either.

Our favorite breakfast place in Portland. We have moved to Arizona but each trip back to the Northwest includes a breakfast at the John Street Cafe. I love the oatmeal and my husband absolutely thinks they are the only place that knows how to make corn beef hash.

Great service (our waitress was in a walking cast, and kept my coffee full). Extensive menu with length specials board. Gluten free, vegetarian, and local foods options. A bit pricey for the neighborhood and design of the place, but would definitely go back.

Every thing Ive eaten here has been fresh and quite tasty. Far and away this place has the best hash I have ever eaten...hands down. Wait staff is responsive....and will happily engage you in friendly banter. My favorite breakfast place in Portland.

The food here is usually pretty good, but a couple of times Ive gotten something that was overdone, art just not as good as the description. Wish I could give it a better rating, but Ill go here in a pinch but not as a first choice.

Went here for a girls breakfast with my friend before we went on a hike. The service wasnt awesome, the coffee sucked, but the food was pretty good. I would probably choose something else next time but I wouldnt hate going back.

A really enjoyable brunch. The food was delicious and fairly priced. It was quiet in there on a Friday morning, but not empty. The portions were generous and they kept me going till around dinner time. I want to go again soon.

spotty. the food & service on the weekends is generally excellent. but today almost everything was a disappointment. if youre going to ask my order multiple times and still not get it right, you need to be writing it down.

Service was good and the food was amazing. I got a Panko cod sandwich and it was honestly one of the best sandwiches Ive ever had. I was literally picking crumbs off the plate. Definitely a must if youre in the area.

Waited 45 mins and our food still had not arrived. People that showed up after us got served their food before us. The waitress had no clue. She forgot to get coffee for one of us. I will never go back

Not so great experience . My glass had what I think was butter on it. Found a hair on my soup. Sandwich was ok, but I asked for cucumber salad and got potatoes . And it was not even busy .
