Today, I dined at the Bijou, one of my favorite Portland spots. My husband has been frequenting this restaraunt since 1981. The original wait staff made us feel good and treated us well, especially because they all remembered us when we came in. The Bijous notoriety included their exceptional etiquette that we regard with high standards in service and food quality when it comes to eating establishments. I couldnt help but notice that the quality of service from the Bijous current wait staff has gone downward. My husband & I arrived about 1:45 pm, 15 minutes before closing time. Usually, we are generously welcomed in to dine, even if we had arrived closer to 2 pm. The former wait staff were so friendly and pleasant. Today, the waiter who served us was not concerned with his interaction with us, instead he went on with his closing responsibilities and getting the tables cleared. When we first sat down, he did not greet us, he just placed the napkin and silverware down on the table. He rushed through notifying us of their food specials while maintaining a subtle condescending demeanor in his voice. He failed to mention that they were out of baguette so we were surprised to see whole wheat toast when the food arrived. He did not check up on us at all to see if we needed anything else, nor did he ask us how the meal was when taking our plates away at the end of eating. Also, the food portions were smaller than normal for the price. He was, however, over ecstatic when he spotted his ex-husband outside walking by and hurried out to invite him to sit at the bar where he fully engaged all his attention to this man. I would rather support the surrounding food carts than spend a girthy $9.00 on a diminished portion of pork sausage, eggs, salad & toast and a lack of customer service. Overall, this has been the most appalling eating experience weve had at the Bijou.

I dont normally write a review after visiting a place once (good or bad), but this place was bad enough that I thought people should be aware of it (esp. with Mothers just around the corner). The service--although pleasant--was very slow given that it wasnt busy. The food (pumpkin & spinach omelette) was under-cooked with poor ingredients. The whole restaurant smelled of musty water (from mopping..?). When we told the server about the meal they did offer to serve something else, but between the smell and the food I had literally lost my appetite. Now, most places would comp the meal (if even just the one meal), but they charged us for it anyway--roadside diners wouldnt do that! Given the amount of time it took to get the service and meal, and the fact that the place was not busy, theres NO excuse for this. The cost is also far above the quality and the service. For $5 a meal more you can go to Mothers which is far, far superior. Its one of the VERY few places that I would never go back to give a second chance.

Unfortunately, our first experience here will probably be our last. We arrived at 8AM to ensure we could finally get a table after walking past this restaurant for months and seeing a line out the door. After we ordered, my aunt noticed one of the line cooks through the kitchen window. The tall, bald man was literally STUFFING his mouth full of potatoes, to the point where they were almost falling out of his mouth. This wasnt just taste testing the food, this was something you would see in a gross-out cartoon. He noticed that he was being watched, stuffed the rest of the potatoes into his mouth, and then started laughing. This person was responsible for prepping food, as confirmed by our waitress. Let that sink in for a minute. The food was good. But that image of the line cook stuffing his face with an ungodly amount of food in the KITCHEN basically ruined the breakfast.

Only reason for an extra star is for great food! Props to the cooks! Rest is for crap service and extremely over priced anything. Lets focus a little on the fact that ur server will see u 3 times. Once for 1st round of drinks, once to bring u food, and once to get paid. Now lets look at there in ability to comprehend large groups. So if ur with more than 4 people just dont bother coming here cause they will ignore u and not even think to tell u u cant devide bills because they simply do not want to. Now, lets see what world it is worth it to pay $10 for nearly any beverage. Mimosa? Really?! Normal places will be $10 for all u can drink for that price. Then on top of that they will not come back to take additional rounds. Lastly, in a group of 8 do u really expect 1 check? And do u really expect them to decode a had written check with crap had written

When you go out to eat, service ranks high. You can have mediocre food but outstanding service and still have a good experience. But when the staff acts like it is your priviledge to be there and asking the server for something is a bother then the whole experience is shot. The owners of the Bijou Cafe need to come off their high horses. The place and food simply are not that good to have such and attitude clearly exemplified by their staff. If your table is ready, they wont even seat you unless everyone is there standing at attention. They will simply pass you by to the next group. The atmosphere and food are not worth the attitude. There are plenty of better places in Portland to go for food and service.

Bijou is really off the beaten track and away from the hot spots for a Portland breakfast, but its also very well known in this town (just a bit farther out). I have been here twice for breakfast and thought the food and service was killer each time. Good amount of space in the place, so that even when it was busy, I didnt feel rushed or crowded. I had a roast beef hash here which was excellent; the meat was tender and flavorful and the eggs were cooked great. Portions average. High quality breakfast indeed!

We went one time with a group of six people. They include gratuity for parties of six or more and then they only came around once to take our orders, someone else dropped of the food and to give us the check. They never offered us any refills. I wanted to order a coffee, but they never came back. They didnt split the check even though we asked them to. And it took an hour for the server to come back after we gave him our cards to pay. The food is really good, but Id never go back after that

We arrived and were told to "sit wherevers clean". The menus were stained pieces of paper. I ordered orange juice and it came with a hair in it. My partner ordered roast beef hash and it was chunks of steak and potato unlike any hash Ive seen before. I ordered buttermilk griddle cakes and they tasted like something from Dennys. The waitress never came to check on us or ask if everything was ok. The total was over $30 and everything was disappointing. Would not recommend.

This place is overall just right down comfterble with the atmosphere and food. As well as the staff I am new to the are and found this place and in the past few days I have been residing here for brk lunch. As far as dinner goes it will be held on Fridays with a different menu. A great place has a great staff with the manager Whitney running her self into an owners position in the future great place to be check them out one block away from voodoo doughnuts thank u staff
