Yes! Since going GF in 2011 I havent had fish n chips. I love it and missed it so much. We ate here last night before we headed to the Hawthorne Theatre for a show. Of course we arrived at about 5:15 on a Friday night. We expected it to be busy and it was. We were seated within 2 minutes, which was fine as there was obviously only 1 person working the front at the moment. I guess the entire patio was full and more than half of the inside was as well. Our waitress was very helpful in recommending the larger (3-piece) platter for us to share which was the perfect amount of food for two hungry people after we both had side salads. Considering it was Friday night between 5&6pm, our wait for food was totally fine. We would have happily waited longer after tasting it. We got the platter that had oysters, catfish, cod, and one other I forgot with fries. Very tasty batter. The chile batter on the codfish was a little heavy for my preference, but the flavor was nice, almost like buffalo wings without the vinegar. Fries were simple but cooked perfectly. Our waiter! He was handing the entire indoor dining area with only a little help from what we could tell. Hes a champ! I wish I got his name; we would have called in today to compliment him (hope you guys read this and know its him!). He was SO nice, engaging enough without wasting time on a very busy evening, and very attentive. He even comped one of my husbands beer as thanks for our being so patient. I dont feel like we HAD to be patient for anything. It was busy, we knew it would be going in, and the service was fabulous. Prices seemed fine. The platter we got was $22, very nice for two people to split. All in all, we got out with full bellies, added on side salads, and two beers for under $40 before tip. Great price for seafood. The desert menu looked amazing, but we were headed to a show and couldnt do take-out. Definitely give this place a try, whether you need GF or not, you wont know the difference.

We went there for a football game and were ignored for awhile. The server finally came by and we asked for water and it took a long time to get that and it was from a different server. We decided to order the deep fried cheese curds and they were the WORST cheese curds I have ever had. As soon as they put the plate down the sweet smell was over whelming. It smelled like those fried mini donuts served at some fairs. The cheese was bland, the breading was too soft and way too sweet! It was sitting in this puddle of what was oil or something and made the bottom curds soggy. It was just horrible. They pride themselves on authentic WI cheese curds but clearly have NEVER been to WI to get great deep fried curds. And on top of that the small plate of cheese curds (that we couldnt stomach to finish) were 9.95! Really?! We left halfway through 2nd quarter of game and left no tip. We will never return there. Also, burnt tasting coffee, bad beer selection, uncomfortable booths, poorly placed TVs for football watching and bad service.

Huge Disappointment! Our experience here left both of us wondering if many of the reviews arent written by the employees. After reading the positive reviews and the sign out front claiming "Portlands Best Fish and Chips" I felt I couldnt miss by taking my friend here for her birthday--her favorite dish is Fish and Chips. But I probably couldnt have been more misled. The fish was just bland, definitely nothing to write home about. The fries were better but still not worthy of a return visit. When we got there I felt we could swallow the unattractive, seat yourself, roadside diner atmosphere in trade for some great food, but the trade off was wasted money on an unsavory meal. If taste matters to you, skip this place. Youd be better off with fast food. Not worth the money at any price. I considered giving it two stars but Im giving it one because it definitely doesnt deserve the overall four star rating that led me here.

My GF and I recently had lunch at the Hawthorne Fish House and were both very impressed. The fish and chips were some of the best Ive ever had. Our waitress was extremely friendly. Best of all, the entire menu is gluten free (outside of the sandwiches) which makes it a great place for people to eat with gluten allergies. The prices were a little high but nothing unreasonable especially for the quality of the food and service that you receive. My GF tried the jalapeno tartar sauce and loved it. I stuck with the traditonal tartar sauce and couldnt believe how good it was compared to other places in the same price range. The prices for drinks are also extremely reasonable. We will definetely be going back again and plan on taking any friends that are visiting to this awesome fish house.

When you cant eat gluten most fried foods are off the menu when you go out to eat. Not at Hawthornes! I cant say enough good things about the fried cheese curds. I almost cancelled my fish order so I could eat more of them, but decided to give the fish a try since it was a fish house and all. Im glad I did. The perch was tasty. I had mine with the jalapeno tartar sauce which I really enjoyed. I saw someone eating the Packers fries next to us and I will have to get that next time. I cant wait to go back. So many different types of fish on the menu and I want to try them all! Edit: Since my original review I have been back many times. Love this place more every time I go. The soup is to die for and the fish tacos are good. Cant wait til football season to go watch a Packers game.

I loved eating here - chowder and the fish and chips were tasty. My biggest complaint (and frankly the most seriously one a gluten free restaurant can have) is that if you pride yourself on being a gluten free restaurant - I expect EVERYTHING you put in front of me to be safe to eat. Sadly, the crackers that are brought out with the chowder are NOT gluten free!!! I wouldnt have thought to check the bag they come in as *everywhere* on the website and menu it says everything is gluten free and holy cow Im glad I did... how many people with celiac disorder have you made seriously ill by serving non gluten free food in a place that is supposed to be safe?? Disappointed to say the least.

When people tell me Portland reminds them of Milwaukee, they must be talking about places such as Hawthorne Fish House. Except trying to find a gluten-free Friday fish fry in Milwaukee is nigh impossible. This is important when you are married to someone with celiac disease. I am ecstatic to finally be able to safely share some of my home state favorites such as fried cheese curds and spicy tuna melts with my wife. We have eaten here a few times now and we both leave happily satiated without worrying a whit if she will have a reaction.
