Looks like I am not the only one that had some poor service, looking at the recent reviews. 1st time I went here for lunch had a great server and they were pretty quick with the food. This time we went, even though it was on a Sun afternoon, there wasnt a huge crowd there. Took time to get the server to take our order, for our food to come out and to get our check.....although you see the servers standing around the bar chatting a lot with each other. The food is pretty good, got burgers and salads and a few apps. The issue I had is with the manager on staff. On my first visit I got a kids meal for my son and since he cant have dairy I asked for fruit instead of the ice cream that comes with the meal and the server easily accommodated our request. (Didnt sound like an outrageous thing to ask for....) So when we went back and I asked for the same thing our server said ok but then when it came time for dessert another server came over (am guessing she was the manager or supervisor on staff since she was the one that came last) and said they wouldnt give us fruit for his meal. I explained I came previously and it wasnt an issue and she said that was an error and they shouldnt have done that. Another member of our group asked if they had any other options for my son and she rudely told us she didnt. In fact (and this surprised us most) she rudely told us "Im not giving you an alternative because fruit costs us more than ice cream so I wont do it." She was very unfriendly and we barely got the ice cream for the 2nd child at the table that could have dairy! Its too bad our visit ended this way but she clearly didnt care about customer service or how she came off, we probably wont go back or recommend this spot to anyone else just because she handled the situation so poorly. Its one thing for someone to apologize and say there was nothing they could do, especially since this req came at the beginning of the meal when we ordered, they could have tried to meet us in the middle but being so rude about it just really left us with a bad impression. And from someone that was clearly in charge of the other servers. Too bad the owners allow that.

Without hesitation my time at Alameda was the worst restaurant experience I have ever encountered. I have never written a post or a review on any establishment and Im disappointed that it begins with a negative one. So, its burger week, I get it its busy. BUT, we went to Alameda because we were eager & excited to try the "na-cho burger". We read the Portland Burger Week website and this appeared to be THE one. To our disappointment we received our burgers and as I was eating it I was thinking "something is missing... nacho cheese?!? On the na-cho burger?!" We brought it to the servers attention and we were given a measly "Im sorry". We bought another burger for my mom that was 16 dollars and asked if at the very least we could be compensated for the 1.50 cheese from that burger since the two others were without. We were given a hard "no" and she went on to say "you were given a 5 dollar promotional burger that would have normally be twenty, I already asked my manager". Guys, its not about the money, its about customer service and principal. I came IN because of one product and was not given what I was expecting. We asked to speak with the manager. She then told us there wasnt a manager there. Wait, didnt she just tell us she already spoke to the manager?! Im confused. We pay the bill, in full, and despite our frustration, tipped 20%. It gets better, after leaving and packing up our 3 year old, we realize she never got the ice cream or drink that came with her 8 dollar kid mac & cheese. So yeah, we went home with a disappointed little as well. And, once again, paid for something we were promised but didnt receive. Awesome. Im NEVER returning. And I wont be purchasing their Yellow Wolf IIPA at the store or other bars either. What a BUMMER.

In summary: Go for the beer, but leave for the food. Off and on, I have been going to Alameda for 6 years. The beer is always good, great beer, and they have, and boast, the medals to go with it. But Alameda Brewhouse is nothing else beyond that. The floorplan of the restaurant isnt conducive to hanging out with friends and drinking beer. Why? Because, well, they want it to be a restaurant. However, to have a restaurant, you should have decent food. Being in Portland, you really need to have great food. Never again will I order a steak at Alameda. I tried, once, medium-rare. It came bloody rare. The steak knife had a hard time cutting it, rare. It even felt cold. So I sent it back. Naturally, it seems, the vengeful kitchen staff decided that I must have wanted it well done. So, back it went again. The last time it did come back a solid medium. Since my wife was well past done eating her meal at this point, I went with it. The ribs are something odd too. Ive had the ribs a few times, and every single time they have been different. Ive had full bottom ribs. Ive had baby-back ribs. Ive had untrimmed baby-backs. All at Alameda and all from the exact same listing on the menu. Consistency is important, and they certainly dont have it in the kitchen. Finally, the menu is packed full of unsustainable seafood. Farmed steelhead and shrimp?!? No thank you. The beer, though, is good. I usually drink whatever is seasonal and whatever is on nitro. Everything else, for the most part, is in bottles and available at nearly every store in town.

Brewery and neighborhood pub on NE Fremont. Big open seating area and large booths along the right hand side, as we as seating at the bar near the back. Alameda has rotating seasonals and 7 flagship beers on tap such as El Torero IPA, P-town Pilsner, and my favorites the Yellow Wolf IIPA, and the Black Bear Stout XX (Gold and Silver medal winner at GABF.) Growler fills available (a ridiculous $5 on Saturday!) and you can find their beers in 22 oz bottles around town and in most grocery stores and bottle shops. Alameda has a fairly large menu with pub fare such as beer battered fish & chips, fresh grilled Steelhead gyros, pastas, and my favorites whisky baby back ribs with mashed potatoes and the meatball sandwich (marinated in Chianti marinara sauce). Come by during Happy Hour (3-6pm and 9-close daily) all the food is $5.50 so try out the deep fried raviolis and smoked chicken quesadillas along with $3.50 pints. Alameda is also kid friendly and offers a separate kids menu, which makes this place a neighborhood institution.

So, its not on Alameda - I know, I know, work with me here. Just, you know, remember that they make really good beer here and come to Fremont, not Alameda, for Alameda beer. Once you get here you can watch some sweaty brewer dudes in action from the bar, or cozy up in a nice booth. I suppose, if its busy, youll get stuck sitting at a table (GASP!) with chairs(THE HORROR!) where everyone will stare at you like the commoner you are, but thems the breaks. If you like it quiet you should visit during the day and talk the bartenders ear off, or pretend to be a foreigner and work on your Scottish accent. Its hard to do while youre masticating on a nice sandwich and crushing an Imperial IPA to wash it down. Really, though, pretty solid Brewery just a bit out there, take some time and explore Not Alameda Street while youre up here.
