Im glad to find another Soul Food restaurant after my old favorite, Mama Lees, closed a few years ago. Although I still prefer Mama Lees - quite a bit more actually - Mrs. Kitchen is probably about as good as it gets for ol San Antonio. Lets start with the cornbread. The cornbread is sweet cornbread and moist just like youd expect. I think it could use a bit more moisture, but Im glad it wasnt bone-dry. The flavor was really good, and it came with 1 small packet of butter. I probably should have asked for 2-3 more packets because ~1 tsp of butter on a 5" x 5" x 5" cube of cornbread just aint enough for this Southern boy. Moving on, the Mac n Cheese was pretty good. Thankfully, it was not soupy, but appears that they used a cheesy Béchamel sauce as the Mac n Cheese did stick together somewhat. It had plenty of cheddar, and perhaps some sort of white cheese as I saw small fragments throughout. I couldnt tell for sure what it was because the lighting was dim, but it seemed like it was possibly some cream cheese as the Mac n Cheese was somewhat sweet. Overall, better than many although not my favorite, even in San Antonio. However, the green beans were one of the most impressive things I tried. Theyre slow-cooked canned green beans with some crispy pork cooked with it. I believe there was some butter also in the green beans as there was a somewhat sweet, nutty richness to the green beans. Man, that was good eatin. Moreover, the catfish doesnt disappoint. It was fried to perfection in a dang-near perfect batter with adequate salt-and-pepper seasoning. You dont get catfish like this just anywhere in Texas or even in Louisiana. To be clear, I was very impressed with the catfish. The most underwhelming part of the meal, at least for me at this trip, was the fried chicken. While the chicken was moist and the batter was fairly good, there was a burnt taste I occasionally tasted, as if the oil was too hot or too older/unfiltered. I suppose its possible the chicken was already fried earlier and then re-fried to heat it back up (though I definitely hope not). From all the bites I did have, I can definitely say the fried chicken is fairly solid. Definitely better than any fast food chicken or the fried chicken of most restaurants. Id have to try it again to see if its better than, say Chatmans Chicken or Maxs Wine Dive, but it definitely didnt compare to Mama Lees fried chicken from back-in-the-day. In short, if you have a craving for soul food, Id recommend trying out Mrs. Kitchen. The folks are nice, the food is good, and theres usually plenty of parking in the back if theres none in the front.

I think the food was exceptional- definitely lived up to all the hype; however, upon walking in I heard one server state "the dinning room is closed". My daughter had travelled 3 hours for the experience and I stated such. It was about 30-40 mins before closing time and we werent intending to dine in so although I thought that was rude I passed it off as every establishment has one. The young lady that took my order was very sweet and courteous and quickly made us dismiss the comment. The place is small and has a very cozy and nostalgia feel that I found very inviting. But, again notwithstanding the best fried fish and side dishes Ive experienced in Texas, the rudeness that came from the matriarch ruined the entire experience for me. In fact, I felt so disrespected by her I will not be returning and thats a shame. I tip my hat to the chef, the ambiance and I recognize the loss is clearly mine- hence, the 4/5 rating.

My order comes with a disclaimer: My initial plan was to take food home! I ordered candied yams, collard greens, cabbage, meatloaf, mac n cheese, fried catfish & cornbread, with chocolate & hummingbird cake bagged and ready to go...and yes kool-aid was available but I opted for lemonade, this time. I have never had a restaurant experience ever, that took me back to so many beautiful memories with my family as I did at Mrs. Kitchens. The food is the BOMB! ...my only complaint is they arent open right now. ...good thing I know GOD made Mondays and if HEs willing, Ill see you again soon, D.

The food is always delicious here, but the issue is that they more often than not run out of food. Ive been here a few times and have either been greeted at the door with a sign that stated that they were closed (even though it was an hour before actual closing time) OR a "hello maam were out of collard greens, mac n cheese, this, this, and this. All we have available is this, this, and this." Each time Ive gone, people were disappointed by the companys lack of food and/or availability. BUT it is hard to deny the wonderful food when it is available.

Food was delish!! I would have given it more stars but they were out of most of the items I wanted to order from the menu. My fried fish was crisp and very flavorful. Mac and cheese and candied yams were definitely well worth the drive. Im just disappointed that I missed out on trying the 7 up pound cake, smothered pork chops, and meatloaf. Please keep in mind this is a smaller establishment. I dont recommend going in large groups however it is possible to order to go. I would visit again just maybe closer to opening time for more of a selection.

Back again, service great. Got to try yams and catfish. Even though i have lived here 8 years i had never been here. I did a web search and this place had many many great reviews so i decided to take my family of 5 for lunch today. It was great!!! Had fried chk and smothered pork chops with the best yams i had ever had. Even my 7 and 8 year old kids loved it. Felt like grandmas house back in the day. This visit is just one of many to come. Thanks for being so friendly and the great food and service you provided.

Wow, so Sundays are really busy with the church crowd. But theres a reason. We didnt have anything that wasnt outstanding! Smothered pork chop, baked chicken, meatloaf, catfish, mac n cheese, yams, green beans, black eyed peas, collard greens, mashed potatoes, hummingbird cake and Jehovah cake, sweet baby Jesus! Hallelujah! Parking is limited so park on a side street, its a converted house so seating is limited. Bring your patience, well worth it!

Wow! The food was incredible. I had fried chicken, catfish, black eyed peas, candied yams, and collard greens. All were the best in town. I thought they would have to roll me out of there I was so full and it was $9.95. Well presented and worth much more. Parking not very inviting but dont pass this by. My new favorite place in town and I go everywhere from hole in the wall places to upscale.
