I tried Agave Azul out once 2 weeks ago and left baffled. On my 2nd visit today, I was sure-- this is a GEM of a restaurant and like Nicholas, it is helping turn Greshams rep as a "fast food wasteland" around. The service at lunch quite honestly is also baffling, in a good way. I felt like I was being waited on at a 5-star restaurant. The single front-of-the-house person was an absolute professional in every well-timed interaction. All this talk, and Ive not mentioned the food. The food is unbelievable. If youre after a simple mexican dish full of bland flavors & a little spice, youd be better served hitting up El Ranchito which caters to that niche nicely. However, if you want rich, bold, and *gulp* flavorful flavors, you cant do much better in my experience. These guys top the food with from-scratch sauce, marinated meats, use fresh high-quality ingredients, and pair things that you wouldnt have guessed. Prices, especially lunch menu, are above and beyond reasonable. They are CHEAP considering the quality. Everyone I watched at lunch had their food within single digit minutes of ordering. Long story short, you will likely be surprised by whatever you order even if a simple quesadilla or burrito. It will not be familiar, and in this case its a great thing.

Returning to Portland from a hike on Mt. Hood, we were unable to find any exciting restuarants in nearby Sandy so opted to wait until Gresham in order to try out this little gem that was highly rated by other reviewers. We werent disappointed! The decor was bright, cheerful, and immaculately clean...something we really appreciated. It was a Sunday evening and we were promptly greeted with fresh, warm tortillas filled with refried beans and accompainied by a homemade sauce with a hint of fresh lime...a pleasant change from the usual fried chips and salsa. Dinner was just as good...a grilled chicken burrito, carne asada tacos, and a bowl of chicken tortilla soup...all fresh and tasty. Service was very pleasant and attentive. If youre in the mood for some good Mexican food a cut above the usual Mexican-American fare, you will be happy with Agave Azul!

Ive been here once for lunch, and unfortunately wasnt impressed with the food. My server was lovely, and I believe she was also my bartender and chef. I praise her work ethic and speediness. However, the Queso Fundito with Chorizo was merely chorizo with melted shredded cheese on top. With the description in the menu referring to the dish as being "creamy", I was sorely disappointed to receive only meat with a handful of cheese floating in chili-colored grease. The "Flan" was delicious...except that it wasnt flan. It was creme brulee. It had a crunchy, burnt sugar top, whipped cream, and it was served in a ceramic soufle dish. In no way was it flan. This place is close to where I live, so I will likely be back to try something else. If they cant nail it on the Trio Fajitas for my next visit, I doubt Ill be back for food. Will update.

A recent find for my family, and a most pleasant surprise. The atmoshphere is warm and friendly and the food is absolutely top-notch authentic mexican food, w/fresh, quality ingredients. Nothing hidden under layers of cheese and sour cream here -- just wonderful 200 percent authentic high quality mexican cuisine served by some of the friendliest folks in the restaurant business. Margaritas are excellent too. Cozy bar perfect for a date night, and the comfortable restaurant area is family friendly as well. Cant say enough about how wonderful this place is and how glad we are to have it in our neighborhood. Our relatives from Battle Ground say theyll make the drive to eat there again since its the best food theyve had since their visit to Mexico.

My first visit to Agave Azul was a mixed experience. First the good part. The food is some of the best Mexican I have had since moving to Oregon 20 years ago (from Texas by way of California). The reason I cannot give it a 5-star is because we made a reservation for 9 people for my 60th birthday party for 7 pm on a Saturday night. We arrived at 7:03. They had given our table away because we were "late." They continued to seat new arrivals ahead of us and did not seat us until 7:45. There was no place to sit while waiting and the servers were constantly having to try to work around us as we were taking up quite a bit of space. So, go for the food, but dont expect them to honor your reservation.

Perhaps the best authentic mexican food Ive ever tasted; this little restaurant has everything I look for in a place. Great cooking, attentive staff, attractive environment, and simple yet eye pleasing decor. Overall, the entire experience here is one that makes me want to come back again and again. Right off you will notice that they cook with the good stuff, such as corn (not wheat flour) tortillas and authentic cheeses. For straight up delicious, no frills meat and potatoes, make you feel good mexican food, Agave Azul delivers beautifully. I recommend in particular the seafood menu items, they are all especially delightful!

Went there for lunch today. We were recommended by a friend and decided to try it out. The place is very clean and the service was fast and friendly but the food was sad. I ordered a chicken quesadilla. It was so greasy that my plate had grease pooled on it. The cheese was like melted rubber and it lacked flavor all around. My husband ordered a chicken burrito and complained of the same lack of flavor and small portion size. Bottom line, it was really disappointing. Not only was the food lacking flavor of any kind but they dont even give you chips and salsa to snack on while waiting for your order!

Terrible. Came here for dinner with my family after seeing the reviews and the food was awful. "Queso" that was just goopy cheddar half melted over chorizo (we had to cut it with a knife before attempting to put it on chips), and chile rellanos were a soggy mush and tasted off. When I complained to the waiter his only half-assed response was that, "no one else had ever complained." I sent back my uneaten plate and they STILL charged me! What a joke. I lived on the Texas/Mexico border for the last 10 years and have eaten a LOT of delicious Mexican food... look elsewhere if youre hungry.

I ate there a little early in the evening on a weeknight, so there were only 4 other customers in the dining room that seats less than 40. The bar holds some more, but nobody was sitting in there. I had the Chile Rellenos con Salsa Roja de Chipotle, and it was very possibly the best Mexican dish I have ever had in my life. (And I used to manage a Mexican restaurant.) Not only was it hot, the way I love my food, but the flavors were absolutely amazing. I cant wait to try everything else on the menu. Service was great, ambience above acceptable.

After eating here I am actually somewhat shocked that this place is even in business. The food is not very good. Many of the ingredients taste like they came out of a can. There is NOTHING Mexican about this food either. I dont know that Id even call it Tex-Mex. Its more like Jr. High cafeteria food. Very disappointed in what we got, and even more disappointed when the check came. Im astonished to see any positive reviews on here. The place is absolutely terrible! Steer clear...
