My friend and I wanted to try out a new "Mexican" restaurant for cinco de Mayo...so we went to this place for it had fairly positive reviews. When we entered, there were already red flags to head for the exit. Not a single employee had a drop of Hispanic blood which does not necessarily make it a prerequisite for a Mexican restaurant, but it is usually not a good sign. Second, the air was filled with the smell of deep fried pastries; more like a donut shop rather than Mexican cuisine. Third, we were not greeted at our table by a complimentary basket of chips. Instead was an industrial sized plastic bottle filled to the brim with the blandest salsa Ive ever tasted. My friend ordered some chips which came in a small bowel at the tune of $2. The stale, bagged chips were an excellent compliment to the bland, tomato paste salsa. Although things already looked (and tasted) bad, we decided to give La Paloma a second chance with their menu. There were positive reviews about their sopapillas so we each ordered one. When the waitress asked if I wanted sour cream with my $9 meal, I made the incorrect assumption that it was included. A sit down "Mexican" restaurant that charges for chips AND sour cream: La Paloma you ARE one of a kind... Our food was brought out rather quickly and the large sopapillas which dwarfed our plates looked pretty appetizing. The deep fried meat pastry was covered in shredded lettuce and diced tomatos. For a moment, my doubts about this restaurant fleeted...until I took a bite. The pastry dough itself was clearly a special, homemade recipe which had a sweet, flaky taste. This was clearly the reason why La Paloma has positive reviews. Unfortunately, the handcrafted dough-pastry was filled with the most generic, store-bought, tasteless fillings. All I could taste was Colby cheese. I could not taste the beef at all and the beans tasted straight from a can. I asked the waitress if there was hot sauce I could dowse this abomination with and she pointed to the red towering tube of blandness. I asked if there was anything hotter, and she brought out a green plastic bottle which was made with jalapeños. The green salsa actually had some heat and helped cauterize my taste buds from the terrible taste of the sopapillas. I could only eat a third of it and my friend ate about half. Overall, La Paloma is right to boast in the fact that they are not your traditional Mexican-American restaurant...they are far from it. Save yourself a trip and money and go to Taco Bell. (At least some of their items come with sour cream)

I absolutely love the food here. However, service needs help. Everytime we go in, you wait to be seated but no one is really a hostess so they dont really know whats going on. The entrance is so small you cant form a line, and no one is good at organizing the crowd. I felt so bad, i wanted to jump in and start taking names and helping the "hostess". On top of the organizational mess, the place remodeled taking a bunch of seating out. I understand tables make it easier and accessible, but it adds to the unorganized chaos, and the loss of tables for people. The food (which is most important) is great. Sometimes its more greasy than normal, but good none the less! The larger size your soapila(sp??) Is the more you will need to make sure its thoroughly cooked in the middle, but it is hard to cook those. Again, great food if you can deal with unorganized service!!!

Dont do it... Please save yourself and your money... I never knew food could have so little taste. To their credit the sopapilla crust is good and clearly homemade... But they go and do the worst thing possible and fill it with cheap and tasteless canned ingredients... Its like having your Italian great grandma make a brick oven pizza crust and then topping it with lunchable pizza toppings... You try to focus on the good crust but its so overpowered by the sheer laziness and cheepness of the other ingredients... I have no doubt these sopapillas were once an amazing meal to behold... But years of simplifying and cutting corners to save money have left this meal a mere shell (literally) of the great dish it could be... Dont do it... There are better and cheaper options.

Summary: Very poor ingredients and poorly seasoned food. Potential to be a good restaurant based on their delicious sopapillas but its drug down by the remaining miserable food and poor ingredients. It tasted like the meat was canned, no flavor and very poor quality. The food was under seasoned. Only saving grace was the fruit sopapilla with icecream but it itself was far from perfect: Cheapest vanilla icecream with canned cherry(s) so I couldnt give it more than a 3 star for the desert but the sopapila itself was delightful. Food 1 star. Staff 2 star. Dessert 3 star - could have been 5 without the bad icecream and cherry(s). The restaurant doesnt accept credit cards either - which is a big no no in this day and age.

Very Poor food!! It shouldnt even be considered a Mexican Restaurant. They dont have one Mexican that works there lol I think I may have saw one doing the dishes in the back. Their food might be a lot better if they brought in some to cook instead of all the white people. My fiance got the Sopaipilla or how ever you spell it and said it wasnt bad but I got the Chicken burrito and it was nasty. Tasted like they put canned shredded chicken in a burrito no spices or seasoning at all. I dont know how they stay in business and why there are always so many people there when I drive by its terrible and would not recommened to anyone!!

This is the place I have driven an hour out of my way just to have more of their food! Its been my favorite place over the years and I doubt that will ever change. While I havent tried everything on the menu everything I have tried is wonderful. The food is always fresh and service is usually fast. There is a reason why the parking lot always has a lot of cars in it. ;) I have no idea what the previous "cow town" comment was referring to, however - while it isnt Columbus (and thank God for that!) its a beautiful area with a lot of shopping and places to go. Obviously that reviewer has never been to a REAL cow town.

I am amazed at how many people think this place is just fantastic. The food was not fresh, the chicken on my taco salad looked and tasted alot like canned chicken, the salsa was not fresh. It was sitting in a ketchup type bottle on my table. The lettuce was brown and kind of wilted. This place also charged extra if you wanted nachos before your meal. I was actually disappointed after I left that I didnt just go to the Taco Bell across the street instead. It would have saved me 20 bucks.

I am sure people love it. I hear the stuffed sopapias are great. I just do not think a mexican restaurant that only has chicken and beef as options, is mexican food. Add some Al Pastor or Chorizo to the menu. Also, I havr never heard of a mexican food place, that only put lettuce, tomato, onion and meat in a burrito. Where are the beans? Rice? Anything? Its overly americanized " mexican food ". I looked at the menu, read the whole thing, then went to Raising Canes.
