First time to this restaurant at 19:30 yesterday (Saturday, 2014-Jan-25). Weve limited sushi eating experience, but are not completely new to the cuisine. To help my wife and I this night, we ordered a combo plate of sashimi, nagiri and a maki sushi roll and asked the chef to make selections that he would prefer (except lobster or shrimp) if ordering for himself. We supplemented this with some pork fried rice and and miso soup. Drinking soda seemed sacrilege paired with what should be fine quality sashimi, so we had jasmine tea and I also had sake (a small order; provides one person three shots). We both thought the food that came was fantastic. We had some snapper, salmon, and yellowfin (we think, our confidence over demonstrating good sushi-eating etiquette overwhelmed our impulse to ask our server what we received, or to approach our chef, who was cutting and placing non-stop the whole time we were there) for the sashimi and nagiri sushi. My wife didnt care for the texture of the snapper or salmon sashimi, but enjoyed the yellowfin and was happier eating the fish at once with the rice, as with the nagiri sushi. I enjoyed all of these greatly (everyones taste varies). Paired up with these was a maki sushi roll (8 pc.) containing a fried ingredient (listed on the menu as the Sweet Potato roll). It was AMAZING, and a great selection to match with the other sushi on our combo plate. The atmosphere was attractive. This is downtown, where space can be tight. The restaurant itself is not large, and the decor is spartan, but tasteful and true to Japanese ethnic sensibility (you dont want an American-theme at a place which serves little or no American cuisine). A TV is on one wall if you need a distraction (hilariously enough, "Jaws" was playing during our visit, how perfect...no it wasnt a DVD). During our visit, the place was 2/3 full, and filled to capacity shortly after we got seated. It was full and hopping until after 21:00. Service was a bit slow, with two servers working the sushi bar at the back and the dining area covering the rest of the restaurant. This was understandable given the level of activity (you want a busy place as this is a sign the restaurant is making happy customers). The servers were lovely and helped make our wait pleasant. I also noted a good contingent of ethnically asian patrons dining with us. Those who came from or have spent time in Japan ought to know what proper Japanese food should be like, and it was reassuring and quite fun to dine among them. Prices seemed moderate. Downtown dining tends to be the most expensive in Grand Forks, and I think youll get more value here than at other restaurants nearby. Compared with other sushi places we been, I think the pricing is on-par or possibly slightly better. The high quality of the food during our visit gives this place a clear edge on the value for money spectrum. Our selections gave portions that were just right for two people, totaling under $40 before gratuity (alcohol is expensive, and so your bill can be economized if everyone keeps to tea, however I really enjoyed how my sake complimented the flavors of the food). When were in the mood for sushi, this will be our new top-pick. Best of luck and success to the proprietors, we hope youll be with us a long time.

The food is amazing. The portions are American. The prices are fair. Im coming here again! Overall its been a fantastic, comfortable experience. We got watered right away and our sushi order was placed within five minutes. They have a real sushi chef and it was amazing! We are it at a slow pace, even though we wanted to scarf it down. We ordered or food and anxiously waited for it to arrive. Ready for another small bowl of rice with mast on top. What we got was each a plate full of our respective dishes played beautifully and cooked perfectly. Not the typical heavy sauced plate... Its perfect. First bites send shivers down my spine. The udon is perfect. The flavors blend in an expert way. Everything is cooked through... best Japanese Ive ever had in North Dakota. My wife... Lets just say foodgasms are real. Definitely coming back often, not just for events.

The service was great, and the food was nice comfort food. They had some different options than the other Japanese restaurants in town, and I appreciate the variety. The entrees were maybe a little on the salty side for me, but I dont eat much salt, so for other people theyre probably fine. We enjoyed the sushi. I also appreciate that they have a picture of each thing on the menu.

I usually dont like to eat sushi this far inland. But when the mood strikes me and I cant shake it I come here. The sushi chef is knowledgeable and makes the best sushi in grand forks. The hours are but different, but theyre worth it. Wait staff is always very polite and explains everything for sushi first timers.

This is my all time favorite restaurant. Of all 22 states that Ive visited and the many many pounds of sushi Ive consumed, the sushi at Shing Ya Japanese is by far the best for its price. Quality sushi, pleasant atmosphere, and welcoming servers make this my go to date spot.

Highly recommend the egg and eel bowl. Also decent ramen soups. 2016 update. Service is back to 5 stars, so the place gets 5 stars again. Food has stayed top notch for the last couple of years consistently. Thank you!

Food was good and service was excellent. They had a few different Japanese dishes I have not had before and the pictures on the menu helped in selecting. Some of the sushi is deep fried so ask before you order.

Cant believe the good reviews. The special rolls I had has been in the fridge. I tried roll 3rd street, shing ya and play girl roll. Stay away. Maybe the menu is better if you dont do sushi

It is relatively quiet on a Sunday morning, which can be very pleasant. The waitress we had was prompt and very helpful. Food was brought out in a timely manner.

I read the reviews and checked it out with my family. The sushi was good, the rice was not. It seemed over priced. Service was good. We probably wont be back.
