The Tavern has gone through a number of drastic changes in the past year, and its nothing like what it was when it first opened in this new location on Markham Street. The entire staff has been turned over, and its all for the better. Theyve also opened a fully-operational kitchen and overhauled their menu with new cooks, which has been a huge success IMO. The new food selection at the Tavern is excellent. I cant recommend enough that you stop in on your lunch break for one of their hand-stuffed burgers and house made chips. You also cant go wrong with the Tavern Chicken Pita or the Wings, but whatever you do *dont miss the pickle chips*! Easily the best pickle chips that Ive EVER had, and trust me when I say that Ive been searching high-and-low for a better version, which has been an insurmountable task. The beer selection is also incredible. They have not only your standard domestic selection on tap or in the bottle/can, but they also have a huge and constantly evolving selection of local and craft beers. Their daily specials are usually very good, and the newest bartending staff is friendly and very attentive. Another thing that I love about the Tavern is their selection of things to do. They regularly have bands come in to play on their big stage, but the staples of the bar are the pool tables, arcade games and the dart boards. You can even join the dart league that plays there weekly if youre feeling adventurous. Ive always left the Tavern happy, and its the only bar in Durham that I visit regularly. The last reviews (from years ago) do not do this place justice, and I highly recommend that you stop in and judge for yourself what the "New" Tavern is like. (Check out the photos above to see for yourself how much its changed from what was mentioned in those old reviews). Oh, I almost forgot to mention that its a great place to catch any sporting event. The owners do get the NFL package, and the place is always packed for college basketball games (though Im usually the guy sitting in the corner watching hockey by myself). They have a good selection of TVs, and if its a really special event, you can even get your game put up on the giant projector in the room with the stage.

Went here recently to see a coworkers karaoke cover band. It was a fun event, but the food was just okay and so was the service. The servers were friendly, just not particularly attentive. And the fries were some of the worst Ive had in Durham. The burger I ordered was just ok - you can do much better for a burger in Durham. The friend I was with did like his hot dog quite a bit (they have lots of toppings variations available) and was pleased that it was reasonably priced. And we were happy to see that they had several pool tables available. In summary it could be fun for a night out if you dont care too much about what you plan to eat. Average food, fun environment.

Over the last few years, The Tavern has been stepping up its game. Theyve added a new porch, improved sound, and expanded and improved their menu. The staff is great and helpful and the environment is welcoming to every walk of life.. I have literally seen bikers, a Duke professor, and a family having lunch all enjoying themselves at the same time. Its a very relaxed neighborhood bar atmosphere... they have two pool tables, 9 large TVs, a lot of dart boards, and different events often. The drinks are well poured and more than fairly priced with great drink specials from time to time ($3 NC pints on Monday is my favorite)... I think they are Durhams best kept secret!

Went there with my friend, to shoot some pool, and play a little dart, left his jacket up stairs. And the bouncer scream out, "Who jacket is this?" he did NOT verify whos, jacket it was or whom it belong too!!! Thanks too him he had gave out my buddys car keys, house keys, and it was Cold As Hell out side. Around 2:00am, we had too try too open the car and warm up too see. If we could get a ride home. NOT To mention, that the key cost 200$.

I came to the Tavern about a year ago for the first time. All the staff was extremely nice and went out of their way to exceed my expectations. The food is great with over sized portions and they will find any and every ballgame on their large T.V.s that you want to see. Its been my favorite bar ever since. Happy 8 year anniversary Aug. 10 Tavern!!!! You are the Best Bar In Durham!!!!! Thanks again Staff!!!!!! My favorite place.

Great friendly staff members... Definitely a place us locals love to go. Has pool tables with plenty of space to play. Also has large dance floor with colorful lighting and live DJ. Second floor has Darts and arcade games... My favorite area is the large outdoor patio and well made drinks... Ask for Chris hes the Best!!!

I just had the privilege of bringing my friends here and was really impressed, the clients and staff were wonderful. Very friendly environment with everything you could ask for in a bar. Great music, drinks, pool, and plasma screens all around, we had a wonderful time and will be back for more.

The Tavern is a combination of a sports bar with a dance floor, a restaurant and locals hang out. They feature pool, darts, karaoke and trivia. They can accommodate large parties for any event. Im particularly fond of theyre bartenders; Chris and Christina. Pay them a visit.

The house chips were super tasty! Otherwise, cool eclectic but kind of messy ambience. The waiter sang amazing karaoke but was fairly unfriendly. Id go again but keep my expectations pretty low which I sometimes like a really casual evening.

Thought it was a great bar, reminded me of some of my favorite bars from out west. However, it turns out the place fills up with undergrads or something at a certain time.

The tavern is just way overpriced on their drinks that are served in warm glasses. Use to come here often but rising costs and lowered standards are just too much.

Good spot. They just added a decent food menu and the wings were surprisingly solid - and Im a wing snob. Keep growing guys, and keep up the good work.

The best place to drink local beers and right place to hangout and play billiards. I love their music bands especially playing rock in the 80s and 90s

Staff were friendly, and food was decent. It took 30 minutes between ordering and being served though, and what we ordered wasnt that complicated.

Food and everything is good. Avoid a bartender with the name that starts with a T. Shes rude and will find out on you for nothing.

Dive bar, two pool tables but only 2 crappy cue sticks that actually are usable. Decent beer selection, eclectic local crowd.

Dont dislike The Tavern. The clientele varies. Mostly Duke students/Grad students. Really enjoyed the outdoor seating.

The staff is amazing, the food is delicious, trivia nights are fun, and the drinks are reasonable. Hard place to beat.

Two dollar pitchers on Tuesday. If youre Dukie do not show up on any other day as the Townies can get rowdy
