Review Part 2: Taberna Tapas has been on our list for sometime and Saturday was the afternoon we made it after touring the Parade Of Homes. The food was more than delicious though I dont qualify as a professional foodie. The Butternut Squash was so tasty, and there was not a morsel left on any of our plates. Well come back for the atmosphere. We were seated at the window and able to watch the People Parade which kept us entertained in between. In the background, besides Saturday football and spoken English, a table was speaking in Spanish (or Italian). That seemed both exotic and romantic and we flashed back to days past in cafes in France, Spain, and Italy. The Durham History Hub had its grand opening, so there was activity and music. Then, there was a march of migrant or field workers. Very interesting to watch and an excellent cause Im sure. I would recommend they have more signs in English next time. Then, the music. Good music sandwiched with non-English language music that had a great rhythm that matched the afternoon, sung with heart and soul, so that you could not help but to sway to it, even though you had no clue what the words meant. The wait folks were excellent, explained that the food was all sourced locally. The Beer came all the way from Wake Forest, NC and the White Street Brewing Company. Well be back...

After visiting Spain tapas has been a new found love. I stumbled upon this place in Downtown Durham. There was a show that night so there were no open tables and all reservations were full. Luckily we were a bit early and was able to sit at the bar since we were only a party of two. Our bartender (who was also our server) was great. He took our drink orders and food order. We ordered several tapas from the menu. My favorite was the bacon wrapped dates, a bit of sweet and savory. My least favorite was the clam and chorizo. I clams because they are refreshing but the chorizo was too greasy for the clams. It wasnt bad but did not please my palette. The food order was placed so that it came out like a course. We started with the bacon wrapped dates, octopus (which was not chewy at all and super delicious), followed by the clams and chorizo, and our paella. The paella was better than I expected not as good as Spain but still pretty delicious. It is pretty pricey but the atmosphere is nice and it is a good place for girls night or date night.

Satisfactory food and abysmal service — to the point where it impacted our enjoyment of the food. The host bypassed nice tables to place us in an awkward position next to the bar where we received shoulder bumps until we asked to move one table over, to which she didnt respond vocally but did roll her eyes. The tables are small and cluttered with condiments, and she returned to tell us "I need my table" and moved our water bottle back to our table — despite having three other empty tables. The server acknowledges my girlfriends anaphylactic soy allergy, then allowed us to order a dish cooked in soy. He then rang in the wrong albondigas, then didnt apologize after he. Thought of the wrong ones and still forgot to ring the correct ones in — the correct ones (tomato sauce) were bland and came out fifteen minutes later. We waited for another fifteen minutes for the check until the bartender came over to ask if he could help... mind you there were only five other tables occupied at this point. The flank steak was good though.

Taberna is definitely regarded as the black sheep of Durhams tapas family, but I think its undersold. While their decor is minimalist and their bar a little small and lacking in atmosphere, they make up for these potential negatives with great service, tasty food, quiet coziness, and extremely reasonable prices. One might even say cheap prices, which is hard to find in Durham. While not every dish hits the mark perfectly, there are some extremely strong options amongst the just okay options. Stand-outs for me include the patatas bravas, the salmon, the basque stew, the wings, and pretty much any of the flatbreads (which seem to change from time to time). Unfortunately, while Ive had good experiences with the paella, a friend of mine who ordered it once found several pieces of broken shell in it while chewing, so I guess eat it with caution? Mistakes like that seem a rarity here though. Conclusion: reasonable prices, good food, great service, nice date spot

Loved this place!!! Better value than nearby alternatives for Tapas. Large enough portions to share. I ordered 2, husband ordered 3 and we had plenty *and we really love to eat!*. Wine was good, not great, but that may have been our selection. I would say unless you like churros to forego dessert as its not worth it, get another drink or plate instead. Every menu item we tasted was amazing and we were satisfying three generations at our table. Wait staff were enjoyable and did a wonderful job during prime dinner hour rush. I found the building hard to spot while driving and gps got us to the block but not the door.

Horrible dining experience. I took 25 minutes for us to get menus, 45 minutes to get a drink (beers were warm). The waiter spilled wine all over the table when serving (no apologies). It had to get better right??? WRONG. Plate after plate that rolled out was just awful. The flat bread pizza was stale, the beet salad didnt have beets, the chicken wings were cold. We went on a night where it was half off the bottle of wine, however the waiter failed to deduct this from our check. Just one blow after another. Should have held out for Mateo.

Fantastic find! I visited with my dinner club and our large party of 8 could not have been more pleased. Everything we ordered and we ordered quite a variety, was excellent. Our waiter was very accommodating and prompt with all servings. The atmosphere was wonderful and we were able to carry on a conversation and hear everyone at the table. We have visited a majority of the restaurants in the Durham/Chapel Hill area and we all agreed this will be on our regular rotation. I will be going back soon and OFTEN!

Delicious tapas! The crabcakes were some of the best Ive had, and the steak was amazing. Im not going to go through everything Ive had here, but none of it has been subpar, and it hits a very reasonable pricepoint. Some of the best tapas in the area, and half priced wine on Wednesdays. Whether youre from downtown or visiting, you really need to go.

After multiple visits with my wife and friends this is slowly becoming one of my favorite local restaurants. They have a great menu of locally sourced food, a knowledgeable and friendly waitstaff and reasonably priced menu options. This is a good night out with friends or a nice spot for a date night with a loved one.

My wife and I went to this lovely place this weekend and could not be happier with the professional service, the selection and the WINE, well the Sangria! My wife lived in Spain for a few years and could not get over how tasty the Champinones (stuffed mushrooms) and Croquettas! AWESOME!
