Inside is pretty standard for your British style pubs. Lots of woodwork and British things. Warm, cozy, and a bit dingy. Like any good pub. The food was a bit pricy, but I cant remember the last time I had a real Shepherds Pie (lamb!) that good. My wife had a steak and mushroom pie that was phenomenal. Well be back for the food for sure. The beer list is pretty nice. They have all the standard British beers necessary to call themselves a pub, and some local stuff for me (I really only like the food, not so much the beer). The service was pretty slow, though. There was very few people in there when we visited and the waitstaff seemed to have trouble remembering us. It wasnt like we were tucked away in a corner. Also, there is some need of renovation (maybe its in progress now?). The entire place felt damp or humid. And there was one of those home A/C units sitting on the stage that was made for an area 1/10th the size. Getting to the bathrooms is a bit awkward. Youll have to shuffle past waitstaff in the back corner, and they werent very clean. Ill look past most of that stuff as long as the food and beer are good, though.

Went to lunch for the first time and order fish and chips because is advertised as the best and it was disappointing. Nice presentation and portion amount is very good but thats all. Everything was tasteless... The fish taste frozen and no seasoning, the "beer" batter have no beer taste or hint at all, no seasoning. The coleslaw taste like it was wash in water and put it in the plate, it was wet but no with dressing. The fries, o well, they where very good steak frozen fries. My appetizer..... mozzarella sticks came with the food ... not before... the batter.... here we go again.. tasteless.. marinara sauce watery and just blaaa... COME ON Chef ... dont you know salt and pepper, oregano, paisley or even adobo would do the work.... Lol,.. I think if the chef spend more time at the kitchen and less time out side at the tables and bar he would be able to supervise and taste food before send it out. For the price, and can save more money buying everything precook and frozen at the supermarket and I will save money and it will have better taste.... Thanks God for ketchup and tartar sauce that save my lunch...

Ive only been here once and that was a lunchtime visit. The food was very good though the wait was almost 40 minutes after ordering --seemed a bit excessive being as we arrived at 11:30am and we were the only people in there; there were only 5 of us. The pub itself has a very old-school British pub feel --probably the most authentic Ive seen since living in the states for over 12 years. It was pretty dark, with accent lighting and had a stale ale kind of smell. Yes, the stale ale smell IS required if you want to make the authentic British pub feel. Though this might not sound too appealing, it really adds to the atmosphere and isnt as bad as it sounds :) There was a lot on the menu I wanted to try; however, there is only so much one can cram into ones mouth during a Friday lunch session --at least without having to taking a nap when returning to work. I will be visiting here again and look forward to sampling more of their traditional style foods. I will certainly update this review after another visit.

The atmosphere was a plus, Ill give it that. My fiance ordered the fish and chips and I had the English banger sandwhich. We shared half of each entree. First, the menu states that their food is all made in house. This for sure wasnt the case with the fish and the " chips ". The fries were obviously frozen and fried to serve. The fish had absolutely no taste, and the batter kept falling off every time we cut into it. For $13 the fish and chips were an entree I would float away from. The waitress was a sweetheart, and was quick to serve with a smile. My entree, the english banger sandwhich, was good. Again, the sausage didnt have much flavor, aside from the spicy style mustard served on the side with the sandwhich. The atmosphere was nice, but the food was what we were interested in and it wasnt impressive.

Got here at about 1 today, walked in and Goya great vibe, we ordered the crab dip, a flavorless experience into gooiness. We then moved onto mains I ordered the lamb dinner (being a Brit this is a real treat) what arrived was some pre cooked potatoes, dry flavorless lamb, bagged vegetables, old roast spuds and a lump of partly dried out mashed potatoes covered in the saltiest sachet brown gravy Ive ever witnessed. As far as a sample of British food avoid this place, if they cant get a cooked dinner right, the basic keystone of British cooking, then I wouldnt risk the rest. Oh and if anyone from here reads this, a Yorkshire pudding is not a lump of fried batter like a donut. Getting 2 stars because the Coke tasted good, yes thats the highlight.

Atmosphere is about what you would expect for a British Pub, not bad. We were a group of 3 for dinner on a Friday night about 9:00. Restaurant was only 1/3 to 1/2 full, so not busy at all. Dinner took over 40 minutes to arrive and my roast beef w/mashed potatoes came cold, the other two dinners were hot. Sent it back and it returned lukewarm. Told server I had lost my appetite and to take it off the bill, which she did. Server apologized, but no visit from manager or chef. Did I mention it wasnt busy? Overall taste of all three dinners was bland, bland, and bland. There are better places to blow $15 per entree in Southend, avoid this one if youre hungry.

We have always had excellent food at Big Bens. Its our favorite place for fish & chips, and the beer is ice cold. They have Red Oak on tap - yea! Service has always been good too. Even when they are super busy we have never had a problem getting a beer refilled. Theres a great selection of British dishes on the menu, and their meat pies are superb! Nice British Pub atmosphere and sometimes live music. We love Big Bens!

Lets understand, its a local pub. Not a pretentious over hyped gastro-abomination. It serves good beer (not 156 micro brews that all basically taste the same except one has a "slight hint of lavender"), solid food and shows a decent amount of quality sports. Once again, its a pub. If you love a pub, go there. If you dont; dont go there and whine about your high expectations. I just wish there are more places like this.

We love the food here but it gets really crowded on weekends. They allow smoking on the patio and often leave the door open on nice days which means the smoke wafts in and encompasses tables near the door. Not pleasant if you dont like smoking. Lukily, friendliness of staff, great food and some good English ale counteracts all that negativity. Parking can be a challenge but light rail is close by.

Service was pretty bad and the food is just OK. We had a couple of different appetizers that were good but a couple of us ordered the fish and chips and were disappointed. It is a light batter which was nice but there was no flavor on either the fish or the chips. Seems like they dont have salt in their kitchen. Two others in our group has the chicken pot pie and the cottage pie and liked theirs.
