Today was the first time I have ever eaten Ethiopian food, and it will be my last. I have tried and enjoyed so many different varieties of foods from different cultures, so I cant say Im a picky eater. I can honestly say this was one of the worst meals I have eaten in my entire life. From other reviews, it sounds like people enjoy this restaurant; so its difficult to tell if the restaurant was bad or if we both just had an aversion to Ethiopian food. Regardless, I will never take the chance to find out if I might like Ethiopian food again, because this meal was that bad. My mom and I were really hungry, so I choked down the food that was there: I have yet to find out if that was a mistake. I sincerely felt as if I would vomit after eating this, so we decided to get ice cream at Kilwins within ten minutes of leaving. Without the antidote of mint chocolate chip ice cream (Im not joking or exaggerating), I truly do believe I would have thrown up. At first glance, the plate which arrived looked interesting and appetizing. I will include a picture, but PLEASE do not allow it to deceive you like it did me. Upon consuming one bite, something was wrong: but, I truly believe it was a wrong that was the way the food was supposed to taste. So, to give it a fair shake (and to satisfy my hunger), I ate everything on my portion of the platter. When I began, I imagined eating the bread under the food and how cool the whole concept of that was. When I finished; I not only did not eat the bread, but I wanted to run away from the smell of the kitchen. The kitchen smelled the same as what I just ate. I couldnt tell at first if it was the bread or the sauce for the meat that was so bad; so I tried both independently, to realize they were both equally bad in strangely the same way. How on earth can a chicken leg (the size of a chicken wing) be made to taste just that horrible?! I had to write this review to warn even one poor wanderer who thinks it will be a good idea to dine here, but now my stomach is churning and I must stop (I dont know if its the food or the thought of the experience or both). Do yourself a favor and try any other restaurant in downtown Asheville. Dont try to find out if Im wrong.

The first time I had Ethiopian food was in DC. It was incredible, but if my first had been here I would never want to eat it again. First the place smelt like feet when you walked in. Second, we got to the restaurant at 2:30 and it was clear the waitress wanted to get everyone out as quick as possible. She even closed the restaurant 10 minutes early. We would have eaten there 2 weeks earlier, but arrived at 10 of 3 and had already closed. I dont know about you, but I dont care how much you want to get your break, it is just plain rude to rush a customer to eat as fast as possible. This also seemed to reflect in the quality and presentation of the food. Just downright shoddy. This is Asheville for you though. Where the customer has to feel privileged to get sub standard service and think they got a good deal. This was our first time there and it will be our last.

I went with 2 other girlfriends and one of them had been here before and just raved about the food. It was my first time every eating Ethiopian style cuisine and it was AMAZING. It was gluten free, grass fed beef, and it tasted awesome! We got the family style dinner and I highly recommend the lamb! The lamb had the best flavor! Family style is the way to go...we finished up with some special chocolate spice ice cream and it was unique and delicious as well. If you want to venture out and try something new definitely come here! My friend who has lived in Africa for many years said the style was very traditional and authentic. Both of the owners came by and spoke with us and really cared about our experience at the restaurant. Wonderful experience and I will be back for more!

Overall a terrific Ethiopian restaurant. Ive been spoiled by some excellent options and while this isnt my top pick, its certainly up there. Staff are very kind and helpful and the menu options are ideal for those wanting to share a meal. The Ethiopian injera bread that everything is served upon is fresh and spongy. Make sure to try the Smiling Hara Tempeh, whether youre vegetarian, vegan or neither. Its one of their best dishes! Fun decor and nice atmosphere

I didnt care for the spongy injera bread, which is the base of most of the dishes. But, that is a personal taste and you might like it. The meats were good, as were most of the vegetables. It was interesting to try but I didnt like it enough to return. Its a fairly small place that should allow for a quieter conversation - something not easy to find downtown. The ginger tea was very good and a friend really enjoyed her soup.

Hidden around the backside of this strip, this place was not busy at all, but oh was it good! I think the construction definitely helped us get seated right away because the food is absolutely amazing and the service is incredible! Also make sure to try the Ethiopian style coffee as it is a pleasant new way to widen your palette and explore a very different coffee culture from what we have here in most of North America!

Id never had Ethiopian food before, but the owner came out to the street and walked through the menu with me. The vegetables were pickled very well and paired brilliantly with the meats. The meats were tender and juicy; the spices were very delicious, hot with a nice warm heat but not overpowering or unpleasant. Im sold on Ethiopian now and if Im back in Asheville again Ill come here.

Adissae has provided expedient service and a delicious dinner each time we have decided to come! The food and ambiance is authentic and the menu items are especially flavorful and unique. Weve very much appreciated the vegetarian dinner for two, and the recent addition of Smiling Hara Tempeh Tibs makes the meal totally filling! Its certain to be satisying!

Amazing food. Especially after they listened to customer feedback to make the flavors/spices more pronounced and their injera is top notch now (still no wheat!). Dont miss out if you read some of the earlier reviews because theyre top notch and can compete with any Ethiopian restaurant in major cities.

The food was absolutely delicious. Presentation was beautiful. The vibe was really mellow and very pleasant. Service was great. I really like what they did with this place. The Mountain Xpress says that they are in a bit of a financial struggle. Thats ridiculous!! Lets show them some support!

I am a local and eat here every chance I get! Its becoming my go to for special intimate dinners. The staff is always accommodating and extra helpful. The food quality is five star! I have eaten at Ethiopian restruants from DC to Seattle and you wont find any better!
