Ate here last Friday night. Really cool space Excellent service. Food offerings are broad and well-conceived. That said...nearly everything we had was WAY over-salted. I understand the importance of salt in bringing out other flavors, but this was just way over the top. The outside of my grilled snapper tasted like bacon. The grits that came with my wifes scallops were inedible. Also...we ordered mussels which come with grilled bread for sopping up the lovely sauce. The mussels were fantastic. But, every piece of bread was burnt. Not just a little too dark...much of each piece of bread was black and tasted like charcoal. I asked our server if this was typical and she responded that it was owing to how it is "grilled" (and oddly she didnt offer to replace it). The wife and I paid $100 for dinner and two drinks (before tip). For perfectly executed food, that is not too much to ask in Asheville. But for that amount, Id expect them to not salt everything to death and present me with bread which is charred into a carcinogenic mess. Too bad...great potential, but simply not worth the price point, in my humble opinion.

Had my birthday dinner here last year on a visit to Asheville and absolutely LOVED it. The service was superb, the food delicious and varied, the atmosphere full of beautiful decor and not too loud, and while the price was high, I didnt feel the least bit cheated. Every bite was worth it. Local food fans will be thrilled to hear that literally every food in their restaurant comes from within a 90 mile radius - even the olive oil! And I believe you can taste it, in that the flavors in the dishes are fresh and powerful (unlike produce that travels hundreds or thousands of miles). The variety of small and large plates allows you to try several different things without breaking the bank. Some highlights for us (and they must have been good if I can remember them nearly a year later) were wild mushroom crostini, soy and chili glazed edamame, and celery root and goat cheese ravioli. It was all delicious! Would definitely recommend this place, particularly for a special occasion. They really made us feel great!

Love Asheville and its restaurants. Usually have good experiences but had a reservation on Open Table and rushed from a few hours away to get there. Was running a little late for a 9:00 reservation and was told that the place wasnt busy so they were closing the kitchen at 9:00 so if we werent there on time to not bother. Went down the street to Chestnut after making a 9:45 reservation on the phone. They had about 25 people in the place and were delightful. They laughed at Chestnut and stated they would never cancel someone if they were on the way and called. No wonder Market Place was empty and was closing their kitchen. I just wonder if the owner knows what his line cooks and hostess decide when he/she is not there. By the way..sorry about the decor and food scores... google makes you fill in all the blanks.... and never saw the place ...likely never will

Hostess was nice but service was horrible! Waited over an hour for bread to be delivered to the table. When we finally flagged the waitress to ask if she was ever going to bring the bread that she poured the olive oil for, she was aloof and had some lady bring it over. My husband ordered duck which was fatty and greasy and the rice was boring. I ordered trout and it was okay. My son ordered filet and it was just not great - how do you mess up a filet? The cost was higher than Posana and some of our other favorites. Should have been suspicious when we were running very late for our reservation (over an hour late last Saturday night) and they called me to see if we were still coming. It was a huge waste of money. We will NOT be returning!!

My husband and I visit Asheville often, but this was our first trip to Market Place. I was excited about fresh, local ingredients and the ever changing menu. However, I was very disappointed by how the chef had prepared the ingredients. I had short ribs that were more fat than lean meat. Poor quality for the prices. My husband had a fish dish, which was bland and his sides were extremely undercooked. Crunchy potatoes should never be served ever! I also found the atmosphere a little pretentious for downtown Asheville. Service was decent, but there are many more delicious restaurants that we will choose in the future.

Was generally disappointed with Marketplace. Locally-sourced food? Great. But serve it with a little more gusto and a little less froth, foam, and frippery. I was a little dismayed at all the sauces and pastes accompanying the dishes. Throwing ingredients in a Cuisinart and pureeing them isnt really my thing. Overall, the food was not well-seasoned, and everything was overpriced. The atmosphere is uncomfortable, and the service is ok, but not exactly friendly. And I hate to nitpick, but the salt shakers were the worst Ive ever seen or tried to use--believe it or not, they were actually noisy.

We visited on February 15th, 2014. There was a special menu for Valentines Day. I ordered the a beef tenderloin with truffle herb fries. The cut was small, and I was skeptical, but it was EXCELLENT. It was the single best stake Ive had in my life to date. I absolutely melted in my mouth. It was so good I was reluctant to share, but I did share a few small bites, and others agreed. Everyone loved the fries and artisan ketchup, too. The other dishes (risotto and trout in particular) were also very well-liked, but my steak and fries was took the cake, and make this a 5-star review.

Favorite restaurant in Asheville! We live in Asheville which is food mecca in the Southeast. Our favorite is The Marketplace. The new owner/chef Bill updated the decor and the menu. Everything is great -- the food, the service, the ambience. On Fri and Sat night they have live music which isnt too loud but adds to the vibe. The menu changes frequently to reflect whats available locally, but many of the favorites remain (edamame like youve never had it and man n cheese to die for). For the best experience, sit at the bar and meet new people. You wont be disappointed.

This is probably my favorite dinner and late night location. The restaurant is very spacious in its little hiding place on a fancy street, and I find myself here more than any other restaurant downtown. The food is decadent and Ive never had to wait too long after I order. The bar is pretty nice too. If you dont call in a reservation they usually have space by the bar. All the staff seem pretty friendly and were very helpful at suggesting fun attractions down town. Id definitely recommend the muscle appetizer, gormet macncheese, and truffle fries.

Some excellent, but mostly just good... In general the food lacked a dynamic to its flavor profile. 5 small plates, 2 deserts, drinks and tip $105 We ate about 30% of what was available on the menu...the white gazpacho and the BlackBerry crisp really shined...the rest was just good. I will be adjusting the Google maps marker to make it a little easier to find. we parked for $2 in the wall Street parking garage just adjacent to the restaurant, the elevator in the corner of the garage takes you down and puts you just a short away.
