+5 Stars for Experience, -3 Stars for Food. I am Chinese, so I try to avoid Chinese restaurants anywhere outside of China (China Town food is OK if you go to a place that doesnt speak English). But alas, my friends were hungry on a sunny summer afternoon and everywhere else in the area had long lines~ Some reviews that said the place looked like its from the 1970s, so I figured at least itll be interesting... and boy was it interesting!!! When the little red door opens its like walking into one of those old Charlie Chan Detective movies... the people eating there must have averaged 60+ yrs old, all the waiters scurried around with creepy overzealous smiles mumbling to themselves in Cantonese, and the first "bad food" sign was that I was the only Chinese customer in the entire restaurant! The last time that I was the only Chinese customer in a Chinese restaurant I couldnt finish the food...but I have to say, this food was worse! It seems like they developed the menu 100 yrs ago when Cantonese folks first came over to NY and they couldnt find any real ingredients (the people working there knew everybody in town so they probably havent changed things for decades). I started with a "Hot and Sour" soup that was neither hot nor sour... so I decided to just drink tea (which was great and kept coming ^_^) and watch what other people were ordering... A lot of dished looked like they were soaked in corn starch, all the "Chinese" vegetables i.e. mushrooms and bamboo shoots, tasted like they came out of an expired can, the tofu was sour, and everything else looked and tasted like salted plastic. That being said, it was like sitting in an kitchy black and white 3D movie, and the waiters were truly nice and entertaining to watch as they treated all the tables like old family members. Again, the tea was good, so I didnt mind sitting there and watching other people eat. Bonus: They gave everyone an extra fortune cookie, (which shows how not-Chinese this place is). I just hope people dont think this is what Chinese food really is because this is just embarrasing... and Im just glad I made it home before running to the bathroom!

Im 25 years old now and I have been coming here since I was in my mothers stomach! She ate here when she was pregnant all the time and growing up we would come by for everyones birthday. I dont get to go as much as I used to but this is by far the best Restaurant!! I love the pupu platter and the house special fried wonton soup.. Jamie- Im sad to see you had such a bad experience, but you should really give them another try..Ive been going there my whole life and never once had an experience like that. This place is not to be confused with your typical MSG filled greasy Chinese food. If thats what your looking for then I suggest you look else where. Their food is cooked amazing. I suggest sitting down in the restaurant. Phill is the best waiter ever.. I also highly doubt it smelled like pee. You sound like your just a really picky stuck up person in my opinion..I recommend this place to everyone :) I will be there tonight enjoying my birthday dinner with my family and I cannot wait!

Walking into this place was like walking into the 1980s. Seriously, that is probably the last time this place was renovated. It looks horrible - - paint is old and carpet ugly. They dont make places like this anymore. There were huge dust balls and cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, showing that cleanliness is a bit neglected. There is cheap drop ceiling with water damage. Still, I ate here and the food was just OK. Very much Americanized Chinese food. Wasnt much taste and everything is drenched in sauce. The waiters thumb was in my rice bowl. The Sprite we ordered tasted like a knock off brand. Our dinner came with ice cream, and that was OK. The vanilla was average, but strawberry very good. Would not recommend.

WE ORDERED TAKE OUT - WHEN I WALKED IN IT SMELLED LIKE PEE, WE ORDERD $20 WORTH OF FOOD & IT CONSISTED OF SOMETHING THEY CALLED HUNAN CHICKEN W/ HAD CHUNKS OF CHOPPED MEAT IN IT & WAS FLORESCENT RED & HAD NO FLAVOR AT ALL. 2 OVERLY COOKEDEGG ROLLS & 6 STEAMED DUMPLINGS, THAT MY BOYFRIEND SAID WERE VERY GOOD..I CANT CONFIRM AS I DIDNT EAT IT. As a child I went here often with my family and now as an adult I continue to do the same. They make homemade duck sauce and the tea served with meals is amazing. I usually get take out but the interior has remained the same all these years, its cozy and antique which I like. I have yet to find another Chinese restaurant that doesnt taste like all the rest. Hoi Ming has managed to stand out amongst the rest.

Arrived with 12 people on Christmas Eve and had reservations. We waited 1:30 for a table big enough to seat the reserved party. The place was very busy the food was good and the waiter really tried his best. If you are willing to wait Id recommend Hoi Ming, If you have a movie planed or any other activity subsequent to dinner Id find another restaurant. Wait 0/10 Cleanliness 9/10 Food Quality 8/10

Food was good but not outstanding. Got the steak which at $19 was way overpriced for the 5oz they give you. Fried rice and wifes lobster Cantonese was good. Awesome tea. Great authentic atmosphere- place hasnt been updated in decades it seems but it works. Waiter was good. Girls bathroom was a bit moldy I was told. For me not worth the premium over regular takeout.

Remember the scene in A Christmas Story when the family goes out for Chinese, and its a very stereotypical 50s style Chinese place? Long Island used to be covered with them, and this is one of the few that remain. This place survived because if its excellent food and exceptional service. Ill be back for sure.

Havent been to this place in a long time, but it wasnt like I had remembered the food to be. The sesame chicken was mushy instead of crispy. The egg rolls were overcooked, with too much "roll" and not enough filling.

Service is the best and the food is outstanding! Great drinks at a very reasonable price. Been going there for 35 years and quality has never failed. Highly recommend if you want classic Cantonese style food.

My favorite Chinese restaurant from when I was a kid growing up near here. Now, I only get back a few times a year, but their great staff still treats me like family.

The food barely had meat, and was bland. Order the kung bo chicken pretty much was only peanuts. Service was the worse i ever had never again a huge waste of money
