THIS PLACE IS NOT CLEAN and the service was horrible- they guy was mean to my kids. We went there for lunch with my two toddlers 6/22 at 12:15. The place was pretty empty (never a good sign) ordered, the guy behind the counter was SO rude. He refused to give extra paper plates for my kids, who make a habit of dropping and ripping everything. He said that the store had no plastic cups so my 2 year olds ended up drinking from the water bottle (which is fine normally, but unnecessarily stressful). Then my kid spilled some of the water they were precariously drinking from the bottle on the table so I went to wipe it up and the table was FILTHILY, the napkin I used was black with dirt and soot from the table.

Have been going to Sal and Carmines for almost ten years. Definitely the best pizza on the Upper West Side and arguably one of the best pizzerias in NYC. Slices are nicely sized and filling. Atmosphere is what youd expect of a neighborhood pizza joint- quaint, nothing fancy. Family owned. Three dollar slices. My favorite is cheese. Pepperoni is good, too. I highly recommend getting a cheese slice or two before delving into toppings. Eat in or take out. They do not deliver. More than worth the trip though.

I had decent pizza here - thin, chewy, and easy to eat. A little bit more variety would have been pleasing (only 3 different pizza to choose from around 7pm on a weekday). The interior also looks somewhat uninspiring - the walls are decorated with newspaper snippets from a reward they won more than 10 years ago. I certainly had better pizza slices in New York City but not in this neighborhood - that should tell you something about the food options on the UWS.

Un buen sitio para comer una porción de pizza. Esta muy buena y son porciones al estilo americano (muy grandes). Son 4$ la porción El señor mayor que atiende es verdad que es muy serio, pero a quien le importa. Merece la pena

Sal and Carmines has been serving pizza in this upper west side neighborhood since 1959. That speaks volumes in an environment that sees frequent and rapid turnover in terms of eating spots. Dont expect fancy decor or an extensive menu in this tiny spot. They specialize in fresh hand made New York Style pizza and that is what they deliciously deliver. Next time youre in the area and you feel like a grab and go slice, visit Sal & Carmines.

OMG.. like stepping back in time. Old style manual register greets you in the window. No AC No service No frills pizza joint. The cheese slice of pizza was like eating butter, sauce and bread. Dripping with grease, crispy and delicious. Sign said it opened in 1959. Slice of pizza was probably 25 cents. Now 3 dollars and worth every bite. If youre in the neighborhood and feel like stepping back in time grab a slice at Sal and Carmines

My favorite slice a za ever. I will admit it is on the salty side and orne time I went in at like 8:30 PM on a Monday night and it wasnt good. That night was the only time out of like 10 times I have been there that is was really poor. The service isnt friendly, the place is dingy, but the pizza is amazing. If you go around lunch time I have found it to be the best. Easy access from the subway too if you are staying in midtown.

I think that Sal & Carmines will forever be my reference in terms of slice excellence. Slightly surly service, pure NYC lore and life, serving up what it does best: off-kilter triangles of pizza. That crust with a bit of saltiness, crisp and chew, the thin layer of cheese over the swath of sauce, all in a grungy, yet clean, space bedecked with yellowed posters and commemorations of jobs well done. Still deserving.

Dropped in for a slice and was not disappointed. The crust was just right with all the tiny air pockets from well rested dough thats been allowed to ferment and rise properly. Why some pizza places rush the dough is beyond me. The bottom was perfectly baked with no sogginess and the sauce was just how I like it, light. The cheese was a good amount and not too salty. Authentic New York style pizza.

Sal and Carmines is a great pizza joint - a real classic place. The place has been around forever with good reason. The pies are delicious, the staff is friendly and theyve recently added (limited) delivery. The pies are a bit on the pricey side but definitely worth it. There is some limited seating in the back but this spot puts its energies into the pie, not the decor.

If you want the top pizza in NYC then this is the place. This is as New York as pizza gets. They understand that the staff isnt supposed to be good. They get that the place might not be clean, or spacious, or even nice looking. They focus on the one thing that brings value back, the pizza. You go here to eat pizza. Thats it. And you will enjoy it because it is incredible.

Flavorful crust. Crispy if they cook it long enough. The tomato sauce and the cheese taste great, and the toppings are very good. Fine, honest, New York pizza by three guys -- one somewhat serious, even glum late middle-aged guy, one grumpy older guy, and one serious and mildly sardonic younger guy. They do, in fact, carry Dr. Browns Diet Cream soda, a definite plus.

The cheese is good but there the dough and sauce is mediocre. Take extra napkins for the oil that is bound to drip and take away the true taste. They like to Touch cash money and the hand you a pizza without any gloves (Nasty) and might I add they like to cough on your pizza if they do not like the customers. Dough Boys Pizza on 33rd and 3 ave. will be a better option.

An institution in the neighborhood! Just plain delicious pizza! Great crust, plentiful toppings when you order them...Now Sals nephew is making the pies and he is continuing the tradition, insuring it will be around another generation. The ambiance is bleh---but that isnt what you go there for. Its totally in keeping with an authentic New York pizza joint

This place is in excellent proximity to my house, thus, it is easy for me to get pizza on the daily. I have never had better pizza sauce. This is the best pizza on the upper west side, because it has a nice family vibe. There is a great selection of drinks such as yoohoo, root beer, and sprite. Finally, remember to get their mushroom pizza--it is sublime.

This is the only place in NYC that I will pay $3 for a slice, but man is it worth it. Plain, spinach, sausage and pepperoni slices are all delicious! Something about the cheese and the sauce, that is just killer. The old man hands, seem to have taken the perfect shape it takes to make a pie. I love this place! Top 3 NYC slices.

This is an excellent place for a slice of pizza - to go! Take it with you, the seating is limited and its hot in there. You will not feel welcome anyway as the staff are all rather surly. Dont get the mushroom - its tinned, rubbery mushrooms. The plain cheese slice and the pepperoni slice are really good (albeit a bit greasy).
