I really enjoyed dining here, but I think they need to look into hiring new managers.... The patio was full when we walked in, and there were only a couple of tables inside. We waited an extremely long time to be greeted, but since I couldnt decide at all it wasnt a big deal, although I was craving a drink. Once the server came over (black man, I think he had dreads? didnt catch his name....) he did a good job. I had a caesar salad and the porcini pappardelle, my colleague had the warm goat cheese salad and the potato gratin. Salad was good, I wish the pasta came with salad or there was a side salad option. I was SERIOUSLY jealous of my colleagues salad, wish Id ordered that! Her gratin was DELISH. However, when at the end we requested split checks in order to provide separate documentation to be reimbursed for the business expense they couldnt do it without a manager. We had to wait at least 10 minutes for the manager. You could tell that our server felt bad. While the food was fantastic and our service overall good, the issues that we had would be cleared up with a good management staff concerned about improving the restaurant. Oh, and overall I really liked the atmosphere, but they sat the two of us at a tiny little wobbly table when the main dining room was empty. Why not give us a decent sized table? And repair your tables... We spent a good amount of money, but all our plates didnt really fit on the table...why not encourage our spending? ;)

This is such a great french style brasserie with multiple locations around New York. I like the UWS location the best though. They have a large selection of specialty bottled beers and a few nice drafts on tap too. The menu has all kinds of delicous entrees, appetizers and salads. The cheese platters are a real crowd pleaser! Sitting outside during the warmer months is a nice treat but there is a lot of foot traffic from the Loews Theater one block down. The night I went there was also a nagging homeless man that wouldnt stop pestering the patrons. I was hoping the manager would have stepped in but that never happened. They have a great menu but the one item that sticks out and will keep me coming back during hte long winter months is the Mint Hot Cocoa served in this crock mug w/o handles. Its a fun quirky serving dish complimented nicely by the rich warm frothy hot cocoa that tastes like youre having mint chocolate chip ice cream with every sip. I love this drink and cant wait to try some of the other popular flavors they also offer. Back next time for a full meal.

Ive always been a fan of the location in the Vill, and this spot on the Upper West Side, while different has a lot in common with it. In a real good way. First off, its tucked into a nice little corner of Broadway. It adds to the warm and dulcet environment you walk into. Ive done most of my hangout time at the bar here, which makes for great conversations to be had. And if you happen to get here on a late night, its a patently more peaceful vibe than in the day hours. As far as food, you cant go wrong with that onion soup. Its not exactly what you could get in a Parisian cafe, the naysayers would suggest. But its close, and for the price really good. Their breakfast items like the French toast sing to you as you eat. And the drinks? The bartenders here make it a point to ask you what you like, and youll find yourself sipping a great cocktail while having a good conversation. All in all, this French Roast is continental cuisine with flair and class.

Felt as though we were cheated. We ordered eggs Benedict and french toast. Both were poorly prepared from the cheapest ingredients. Hollandaise sauce looked like just melted butter and the poached eggs were cold which suggested they were cooked long before and has been waiting in the luke warm water. The bread of the French toast had a weird yellow color. I think they were bought frozen, probably one of the cheapest ones, and just were warmed right before being served. We often eat outside and try new places in NYC. So, I have a good idea about how the brunch food is in other restaurants (e.g. Spring kitchen, good enough to eat, le monde). This place is close to a roadside diner where no fresh food is available. But they charge more than other restaurants who you would think in the same league just judging from its looks &design. Although it looks cozy and crowded from the outside, the food is not genuine for the price.

I was visiting a friend and she insisted we go to French Roast for lunch. We had no reservations but got seated right away and started with Honey glazed baked brie which was delicious and perfectly paired with walnut bread then we got Salad Lyonnaise which was great, nice crisp lettuce and perfect crunch bacon bites and we ended ordering Steak Au Pouivre which was absolutely delicious, meat perfectly done with the best brandy cream sauce I tried. We couldnt resist getting Valrhrona chocolate pudding for desert. The food was delicious, the service good and the ambiance was great.I have to mention that we were sharing the food so it was definitely enough for booth of us which kept the cost down and gave us a chance to try more dishes. This was a perfect lunch at the corner cafe and it felt like I was dining in Paris.Cant wait to visit my friend again and have lunch at French Roast.

A friend who lives on the Upper-West Side recommended...ok demanded...that I take my family to the French Roast Cafe while we were visiting the city in Spring 2013. I trust this guy a lot as a local and didnt hesitate. The food was not only reasonable in price it was delicious. The service was good, in general, except for not having the same server throughout the meal and then asking for a refill 4 different times and not getting one until the the check came...and we were charged for the refill. That was a bit of a slap-in-the-face but Im going to trust that it wasnt intentional. We were never rude, we asked kindly multiple times and then got it as we were leaving. Back to the food. It was unique, satisfying and fairly priced! I feel important and able to say that I know a great local joint now for future endevours! Overall, impressed!

Used to be a great neighborhood spot, open late, with great bistrot and brasserie fares. Used to be bustling, vibrant and busy and that was the first indication that things had changed when we arrived the other night around 10pm for dinner. Few people, plenty of seats and quiet..that was strange. Instead of moules frites some kind of babaganoush...($ 12 for a lump of it with 2 half grape tomatoes....) Same great decoration but the food is really nothing special any longer, and the bill has gone WAY up ($80 for two with babaganoush and french fries for me and a plain chicken dish for my husband with one glass of wine each.) We will not be back.

Really good late-night (or rather, ALL-night) bistro. I have been eating here for about ten years. The food has always been good, not amazing, but a very reliable choice. I went last night, after not having been for a month or two, and the menu was updated! Lots of new dishes or re-conceived dishes that taste really good. I highly recommend the fried calamari, macaroni and cheese (very creamy w/ gruyere) and the French Roast burger. Do not dine here if you are in a rush. The service is always pretty slow. Ive never had a problem getting a seat, but I have walked by at times and have noticed a wait- brunch time and lunch on the weekends.
