My brother and I hosted a surprise 40th anniversary party for our parents at Cafe Matisse on a Sunday evening. We could not have been happier with the success of the evening, so I thought it necessary to send a glowing review anywhere I could. After many blog searches and Top Restaurant list searches, and a Zagat cross-reference, this place was what we agreed upon. I cannot express in words how happy we were with our choice, but Ill try... Location: It wasnt a crowded, expensive trip with overpriced parking in NYC; it wasnt an overpriced renting out of an entire restaurant in Morristown or Montclair. It was just right in every way and fit our party of 22 perfectly. We sat in the garden area out in the back, and did not remember that we were in Rutherford. It was quiet and beautiful and private - serene and lovely. Food/Menu: The menu we had to choose from was tough for our prixe-fixe party. Everything looked so delicious. The chef was flexible with our gluten free needs and sesame allergy needs. ALL of our family and friends were groaning at the fantastic food for all three courses and we applauded Chef Peter when he came out to see if everything was alright. Our family and friends are tough customers (most are foodies), and they were all thoroughly impressed and satisfied with both the portion sizes and the ecclectic flavors. Again, perfection. Service: Larry, the manager, is absolutely wonderful and gracious. He is helpful and kind, has a wonderfully funny personality, and was an absolute joy. The waiters and waitresses could not have been more attentive and friendly. They were knowledgeable about the menu down to the littlest detail and would bring us anything we needed. Just magnificent and truly impressive. I can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is throwing a small party, having a romantic date night, or just wants an awesome meal. Thank you, thank you, thank you so very much to Larry, Chef Peter, and all of the staff at Cafe Matisse. We love you guys and cannot wait to return!!

This place is absolutely amazing! We ran across this highly ranked coffee spot on Yelp (which to me was a little odd for the area). noticed and greeted me right away, and I decided to strike up a conversation as I was waiting for my friend to park. He is so passionate about good, healthy, delicious food, and having a place with better options for his neighborhood that hes lived in for so long. good prices, super clean, cute and newly remodeled along with awesome service is what this place offers! Typically not something Id expect to find in this neighborhood. I really wish all the best to and his business. It looks like they are doing pretty well since their grand opening a few months back. I have extremely high hopes for this place! I only got a chance to have the yummy and a delicious latte, since I had dinner plans right after. Trust me when I say that I will definitely be back for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner though :)

I came here with my family and they loved everything about Suprema. The décor of the restaurant is modern rustic and warm. They have a great selection of salads and food in the case, but the menu items are my favorite! Everyone working there was attentive and made our Suprema experience great! If youre dining in, I recommend the Mozzarella in Carrozza or Aranchini as a starter. Im in love with the Valle dAosta sandwich and the Pasta Carbonara, next time Ill try one of their salads! Everything is so fresh and delicious!

Matisse is an appropriate name for this fine restaurant. The artist has managed to be reincarnated into the body of Chef Peter. Food as art. Not only is the food amazing, but the service is outstanding. Larry, the GM of Matisse and the rest of the wonderful staff are warm and ingratiating. Yes, its expensive, but for a special occasion in a special place this is it. Who ever gave this restaurant a poor rating, probably thinks the ubiquitous buffets in Jersey are the height of hauteur cuisine. Go, you wont be sorry.

Was so disappointed with the menu. First, the name of the place is French, the decor is French, but the food is NOT French. Secondly, there are no appetizers and meals...it is all appetizer sized and you can only choose either 3 (up to 5, I believe) savorys (appetizers) and a dessert. Thats how the menu is. Food was mediocre at best. Left there spending $265 for two people with tip and a belly ache. The only good thing about the place was the decor and the service.

Definitely pricey, but perfect for a very special occasion. The dishes are extremely creative and better than anything you would see on a food network cooking contest. If I had to recommend a dish, it would be the scallop w/ andouille sausage. Just incredible! Go for the four-course grazer if you want a filling meal for everyone. All eight of my guests had a great time and enjoyed the food.

This is our absolute favorite "special occasion" place to visit. The place is romantic and cozy, we always love the friendliness and professionalism of the staff, and the chefs mixture of ingredients is amazing! We are always impressed at the presentation. It is pricier but well worth it.. and with a 4 course tasting I am almost always too full to finish the dessert!! And I can eat. :)

Best experience ever. They are very friendly but if youre from NYC it might feel theyre too friendly which is a good thing. The food is great and the atmosphere is romantic however they do not serve alcohol so its a BYOB type of place, not to worry theres a liquor store only two blocks down. This way you dont end up spending double on drinks then you normally would in other restaurants

"fine creative dining without stuffiness! i believe that the chef is a graduate of the culinary institute. his passion for perfection is truly evident with each dish. we have been eating here for over 20 years, have taken some of of the most demanding nyc foodies and the opinions are always the same...""nj restaurant is on par with the best of nyc."""

After browsing their website and food pictures we were excited to get there. Entering the restaurant, we were disappointed by the overloaded deco with many styles and very soft lights. Food was good but we did really not appreciate the chefs work as we should have because of the soft lights. At the end we do not feel we have enjoyed for the price.

The chef at Cafe Matisse certainly likes to makes stacks and list ingredients, but if you want a meal, it is best to go elsewhere. For the ridiculous price of $63, you get your choice of two appetizers and a dessert. Sorely missing, besides an entree, are all those things that make a meal: salad, soup, vegetables, grains or potato.

This is a great place to take a date if you can spare the money. Whoever the chef was when I went there was amazing. The portion sizes were just right, and they were brought out with just enough time between each course. The food here was so good I almost felt like I didnt deserve to eat it! I wanted to cry (in a good way).

Style over subject! Do not waste your time. The food is not bad, but too tiny to realy feel the tase what you eat. Tuna that I ordered was in a form of 2, 1inch tiny cubes with a spoon of salad and sauce. I think that the chef secretly eats half of what you order. Be ready to go to some steak house after...like I did.
