Surprised of all the 5-star rating. Sushi? I dont think most people have eaten authentic Japanese sushi. This is far from being great including the rice which they use the wrong type to begin with. The service was okay, nothing spectacular and our server was a bit too pushy. Miso soup gets 1-star. Ive never had a miso soup that was sweet. Its almost as though there were no miso. Even my wife said it was very sweet. Miso should never taste sweet. The rice? Too dry. The dish my wife had with beef and chicken were also very dry. Nothing tender about them. The sushi especially the sake (salmon) was decent. It was comparable to the ones from Sake but Im starting to think Sake is actually tad bit better overall. I have to say though the place is beautiful. The private sections from what we seen adds a nice touch and gets 5-star. The bathroom is also brightly lit and VERY clean. Thats another 5-star. We were just disappointed with the food. I still went with some skepticism with so many 5-star rating so it wasnt too much of a disappointment. Ill give it another chance with dinner next time and update the review.

"Looking for the Best Go to Shio !" They have the freshest fish in Portsmouth. I prefer Sashimi over sushi and they have huge variety that changes weekly. The service is friendly, and fun. Ask for something if you dont see it and they will help you. Management has set up a rewarding experience that will bring you back as this staff takes great care of you. The rolls are some of the best I have had anywhere in the US. They are wrapped tight, presented beautifully and stuffed with delicious assortments of crunchy tuna, avocado, mango, shrimp, caviar, roe and tobiko just to name a few. Ask about having them create a roll for you or try two of my favorites, the Saltwater Roll and the Azita Roll. Be sure to ask for "genuine" wasabi and the special "Multi-Egg Desert". Just writing this review makes me want to return tonight.

This is probably the best sushi in the seacoast, certainly my favorite Japanese restaurant if not my favorite restaurant in general. Its a busy place with an extensive menu, and fast, "team-style" service (multiple servers attend to each table). The waitresses are always super nice to my two year old and they give her the "training" chopsticks etc. Even though it shows "$$" for price, if you know how to order—and just in general because of the quality and portion size—you get exceptional value for your money here (especially with the lunch specials). For a similar cost to a meal at a crappy chain restaurant like Applebees, you get great sushi and other classic Japanese food. The desserts, like the fried banana, are amazing and done with style as well.

Wow - what a surprise! We stopped by for dinner the other evening as we passed through Portsmouth and were somewhat shocked at how good Shio is. It might not look like it from the outside of the restaurant, but dont let that fool you. My other half is Japanese and gave this place the thumbs-up (and that does NOT occur very frequently). The miso soup is very good, the sashimi, while not cut with skill you might find in other places, was incredibly fresh, and the tempura batter was light and really well done. The wait staff were incredibly attentive. We will definitely be stopping by again when were in the area.

This place was straight up horrible. We were starving and ordered a massive amount of sushi and soup. The soup tasted like dirty microwaved fish water. When the sushi came out, the smell hit me in the face like an old mackerel out of the Kennebec River (like 15 years ago when the river was polluted). Minutes after eating, both of our stomachs were rumbling (like the U-haul were driving back to Maine). We had stabbing stomach pains (like if we had been stabbed at the Walmart in Lynn, Mass). Tonight is not gonna be a good night. Sorry Shio, but Im about to be sick (at least it wasnt in your parking lot).

The food is great tasting! The dumplings are some of the best Ive had! Thats the only good things about this place. The servers rush you to order, the menu lacks diversity in rolls (though there are many rolls listed they dont have many proteins), the sodas arent free refills and the miso soup isnt anything special. Take about 47 imodium before you go or youll be like me and spend the better half of an hour s****ing your brains out or maybe youll get that and horrible food poisoning like my friend I went with. LISTEN TO THE BAD REVIEWS!!!

I love Shio. I agree the location could be better, it is in a strip mall with the beauty school and the Big Lots, however, they have done a great job with the design of the restaurant and once you step inside you forget that you are in a strip mall. The service is great. The food is fantastic and prices are very reasonable. I love their sushi and selection of bento boxes for lunch. Great for a party of two or a small group of people in one the Tatami rooms.

Excellent service, excellent atmosphere, and above all, excellent food! We loved all of the seating options. This is a great place to cataract any kind of function, from family night to date night and everything in between. its classy enough for a more formal meeting but casual enough to bring the kiddos. We brought our 1 1/2 year old and she loved it and the waitresses were so great to her! well definitely be returning!!

fabtabulous! Im no sushi snob but I do know what I like. The sushi tasted fresh & amazing, the miso soup delicious, the wasabi pork dumplings scrumptious and the red bean ice cream was a tasty treat. Stuffed 3 people (one got a steak) for $50+tip (no alcohol, shared dessert) so not bad especially for the high quality. Work in Dovah so usually go to Oriental Delight, which is good, but Shio is great.

Only sushi restaurant in the area that gets the 5 star treatment from me. Far and away the best around. HUGE selection of rolls...and the staff is hands on. If you are a sushi amateur, they will answer any and all questions that may be asked. DONT LET LOCATION FOOL YOU. This is quality sushi at its finest. And the price is more then fair for what they are putting out.

Shio has the some of the best food I have ever had, everything I try there is excellent. The sushi is always fresh and delicious and the entrees are all delicious. The decor is beautiful even with some traditional japanese seating! The service is great and the servers are all so friendly!! Shio is my favorite restaurant, I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Great Sushi place. It was packed and their was a wait, and I understand way. The Miso and Dumpling soups were both great. Wife loved the Sushi. I dont care for sushi, but they have beef or chicken Maki, I went with beef and it was delicious, unique twist for someone that typically prefers more American fare. Very good Mai Tai too!

Ive eaten at alot of sushi restaurants around New England and this one I believe tops them all. Sushi is fresh, very well prepared, and with three sushi chefs I know the fish turnaround is fresh. One of the few restaurants the presents you with a hot towelette to clean your hands after you sit down. Top knotch at modest prices.
