I grew up in Southern California where my "native cuisine" was Mexican. Anyone who has been there understands that there is a taco stand or small Mexican restaurant on every corner...sometimes two or three...or even four. La Carreta could hold its own with most of them. There are a few misses...soft tacos should be made with soft corn tortillas...not flour. And packaged taco shells like you get at Taco Bell are a turn off. But the chips and salsa are home made and delicious, the margaritas are perfect (bring back the 32 oz!) and the carnitas are tender, juicy and delicious. They have a wonderful mole sauce, and their carne asada is delicious. Excellent beans and rice (made with peas and chunks of potatoes...yummy!) and a terrific chicken taco salad in a flour tostada bowl. My favorite thing to do is take whatever is left over, pour it and salsa over chips and take it home for the next day. Love it. My wife loves the vegetable quesadilla, (but there is no accounting for taste...she doesnt even like cilantro), and my boys love the nachos supreme (and they give me the guacamole). Oh, and the chili rellenos are great, as is anything with their salsa Verde. As a transplanted Californian, my first course of business when I came here was to find good Mexican food. I tried a bunch of them and never went back. Once I found La Carreta, I stopped looking. The service is excellent (I am still often surprised at how quickly the food comes...fresh and always hot) and the servers are personable and pleasant, and after going there for the past nine years we are known by a few of them. Its a good thing, too, as the place is nearly always packed...especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Peoples idea of Mexican food in New England is Taco Bell, and this place is like a diamond in the rough. People say the food isnt consistent, but every time Ive been here, its been excellent. Their beans are to die for, and I dont even LIKE beans. Their spinach quesidilla is my favorite. If you get a taco, beware, you might have to eat it with a fork as they stuff them to the brim (not that Im complaining!). The service doesnt meet the standards of most restaurant goers, so I docked them a star, but the food here is worth it. You will most likely have to wait 20 minutes or more to sit and a bit longer to have your order taken, even on an off night, although theyre usually pretty good about getting you some chips and salsa (best salsa Ive ever had). Once you order, though, the food does come out pretty fast. Because theyre always so busy, theyve had to sacrifice some friendly customer service in order to be efficient. Once you finish your meal, I hope you have some conversation topics because they do place priority on people who HAVENT eaten yet, so you may be waiting for your check for a while. Its best to ask them to give it to you before you really want it. Once you get the check, I suggest going up to the front to pay there instead of paying your server. Especially if you have a gift card. So, if you dont mind a crazy rush of waiters and bus-boys, but love a good burrito, this is the place for you. If youre the kind of person who enjoys the quirky Outback waiters who sit at your table to take your order and try to be your new best friend, you might want to move on.

I just dont get it. This place had great reviews on both Google and Yelp. Granted I am new to the region, but I am also not from an area that is known for great Mexican food. This food was bland, bland, bland. There was a cheese sauce on the nachos that I am pretty sure came out of a can. I got the Pollo Poblano, which desperately needed salt and had no heat to it, which just isnt possible if youre using Poblanos. The salsa was mostly tomato puree. Where are the spices? Where is the heat? It neednt burn your face off, but salsa at a Mexican restaurant should be at least as spicy as the stuff in a jar. But most importantly, it should have lots of flavor....onion, cilantrio, cumin. The service was pretty disappointing too. Our waiter seemed like he didnt really want to engage with customers. He was very aloof and didnt check on us or seem to notice or care that we werent having a great experience. Hopefully there is some authentic Mexican in this area somewhere.

I used to enjoy eating take out from here but the quality and consistency has gone drastically downhill. Numerous times has my order been wrong . Numerous times have I found bones in the shredded chicken or large veins in the beef. Its a real shame the management and kitchen management has let the quality slip to the level it has over the last month and a half (as of August 2015). I will be taking my business to other more consistent mexican restaurants in Nashua from now on. If you choose to eat there I HIGHLY recommend you avoid take out and actually dine in, so any mistakes can be dealt with immediately.

I honestly dont understand the great reviews. My husband had the "Texas Fajitas". We are from Texas, and if one received fajitas like this in Texas they would be very, very unhappy. The beef looked like sliced up Steak-Umms. Fajita beef should be grilled skirt steak, sliced against the grain. And whats with the quesadilla? It should have melty cheese and grilled chicken. And it should be SLICED! What I got was a big soft taco with dry chicken and queso in it...with a side of the oddest looking pico de gallo Ive ever seen. Bleh! Maybe we were there on an off night? Oh well, we didnt move here for the tex-mex.

Heard great things about this place, so I was very disappointed with the whole experience. We waited quite a while for food after ordering. When it arrived both dishes were lukewarm and there was several small pcs of lettuce on my plate that should not have been there. Also the plate was greasy and had fingerprints all around the edge. Food was bland and the presentation looked like microwave food from the freezer. Maybe we went on the wrong nite? I usually give a place a couple tries before I write it off So maybe we will try again on a diff. nite. Our visit was a Monday night at 6pm
