I would probably be torn between 3 and 4 stars (with a five-star review being reserved for the old-style, stuffy-sort of fine dining, with table-side service, starched tablecloths and folded napkins, a sommelier, etc.) but, Ive been a resident in this area for over 25 years and that, in itself, would bump up my review a solid point. When I was much younger, I worked in food and beverage management all over the country, Kansas City, Chicago, San Francisco, Palm Beach, etc.- all four and five star hotels and restaurants; so I believe that my past experience in a very tough, demanding business, gives me an eye for detail that others might miss. Our neighborhood has struggled with crack and crime and the problems of other urban environments, but you dont have to worry about walking the streets anymore. Though still in the process of gentrification, it has retained its congenial diversity. I enjoy the locale and clientele: a mixture of young and old, different racial ethnicities, local office workers and their management, acceptance of sexual orientation, and the closeness to the artsiness of the nearby Crossroads District. The physical layout of the restaurant lets you see exactly how your food is being prepared (you can even see the prep work being done). The staff is extra friendly and some of them (the ones Ive had a chance to speak with) live in the neighborhood as well. Atmosphere and food quality is top-notch and you even get a chance to pick up some local produce. It is very hip, in a low-key, relaxed sort of way and a wonderful place to take friends, especially from Johnson County where you just dont get this kind of non-corporate, one of a kind, community-like ambiance. Ive been to YST at least a dozen times and each of those times, the food has remained consistent, in presentation, freshness, quality and taste; one might call it innovative, comfort food. I not only enjoy myself when I go, but I feel like I support my neighborhood and the young people that take pride in what they produce, a sense of commitment, Although generally young, the crew, if not in restaurant work as a career, is probably composed of struggling, local artists, not business majors expecting large tips for little knowledge or respect for the food. Prices are reasonable. Try it and I would suspect you, too, will return.

My favorite brunch/breakfast place in KC. I have a renowned breakfast opinion so you’re gonna have to trust me. The quiche is where it’s at. Also it’s a rotating menu with some staples but you really got to try the quiche. Also the pies. And the grapefruit cake thing is where my life comes to completion. I could go on about all of the delicious things but just go put something in your face and it will thank you. Also Im a vegetarian so for you veggie folks- its very vegetarian friendly. Not so much vegan friendly but there might still be some things for you vegan folks. Pro-Tip: Older folks like to mess up the flow of this restaurant. Ordering and THEN sitting down really must cause them anxiety so they try to save their seats so by the time the people, who followed the requested rules of the place, are done ordering- there’s no seats! So…don’t do that. It’s annoying. They’ll help you find a spot if there isn’t one by the time your food comes out and if you see two people sitting at a 5 person table, maybe ask to share it? It never hurt anyone to share.

The food here is superb. The menu options are limited if you are looking for a wide range of breakfast foods but, the quality far exceeds that inconvenience. Prices are better than a Starbucks or other national chain, based ok both quantity and quality. The caramel latte was the perfect blend of sweet and acidic bitterness. Hot but not undrinkably so. The croissant breakfast (sandwich) was delicious. The croissant was flaky and crunchy. The eggs were both fluffy and thick. I have no clue what else they put in those eggs but the cheese they used complimented it immensely. The place itself has a farmers market feel with a California vibe. The term rustic would not be misplaced here.

The cooks need something written down to tell them how to make their own food in a consistent way. I would order the same sandwich(veggie) and every single time, depending on who made it, it would be totally different. the last time, the kid put what i can only assume were salted tomatoes on it, and cucumber dressing. it tasted like salty vomit. i couldnt eat it, and my vegetarian friend couldnt either, and its too far away to drive all the way back to complain, even if i were the sort of person who would want to do that(in person anyway, haha) i really loved this place, but for the prices they charge they really need to get their crap together. i doubt ill ever go here again.

The gold standard when it comes to brunch. Everything is fresh, local and absolutely delicious. Their menu can be a bit limited, but you wont really care. Also, its nice that they sell local/sustainable groceries there. A true gem. I almost dont want to recommend it so highly because itll get too busy. Still, they deserve to be known far and wide. And the service is absolutely fantastic. Everybody is SO nice and the eclectic nature of the place, which usually detracts from an experience for me, adds something. Love it.

Great food, excellent coffee. Understanding how the place works can be a little strange. Order at the counter then find a seat, dont be afraid to ask to share a table with extra seats my wife and I have done it several times (10-15 times maybe) and it has always been a nice experience. We have only been there for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, so not sure if they even serve later in the day. Never had a bad meal and tried just about everything on the menu. The veggie bierocks was a standout favorite.

I love this place. Freshly made food and delicious drink opinions coupled with nice staff and good smells make this a favorite for me. Some items sell out fast but they have a good variety of breakfast and lunch choices. Their cinnamon rolls are large and yummy, just like they should be. The black bean party filled me up and was still fresh after taking it home. Try the vanilla bean Dry Sparkling water, even if you dont like sparkling water. I dont and now I cant stop buying it!

Well, walking in its cute and quirky. But - all of the food ordered was served cold or at room temperature. The only thing "hot" was the gravy. Breakfast food, especially eggs, should never be cold. Sticky buns werent sweet enough, egg casserole was flavorless, biscuits and gravy were just okay. Portions were too large - I wouldve traded quantity for quality. If youre a vegetarian/vegan dont even bother. Youll starve. The one star is for the coffee.

You Say Tomato was one of the best things I tried in Kansas City. If youre looking forward to knowing more about U.S. and their people, touristy places are okay, but places like You Say Tomato give you an authentic, real sense of Midwest Missouri. The food is awesome, the place is really comfortable and fancy, and the people that work there were just super nice. Its not cheap, neither expensive, its just the price it should be. Totally recommend it.

Amazing. I come here almost every Sunday for brunch and again for lunch during the week if I can. Everything is good from the cheesy grits to the fresh baked pies. They use a lot of local produce and make most everything from scratch. One of the nice touches is that they serve every entree with a slice of pineapple, watermelon or whatever else is fresh that day. Simple, fresh, local, affordable-- every neighborhood needs one of these restaurants.
