Normally I do not review sites. I know that I should more often, but it seems that most restaurants are just not that special or that bad. However, I feel for Le Fou Frog I have to make an exception. First, let me say that our server was excellent, and the food we had was divine. My brother and his daughter (14 years old) were visiting and we needed a place to go after First Fridays and the places closer to the crossroads were way too busy. The evening started quite nicely. We ordered a bottle of wine for the adults and the cheese plate for all. Our server offered to prepare special dishes for my brother and niece because they are both vegetarian. Everything was lovely, but the evening started to go badly when the owner decided to make us feel more at home. Unfortunately, the owners idea of "at home" is at best deviant and at worse pedophilia. To make this reasonably short, the owner basically ignored the others at the table (the ones with the credit cards) and began hitting on my 14 year old niece. To her credit she promptly told him to "move away". He finally did move on after a very awkward couple minutes, only to return about five minutes later. My niece again told him she was 14 and to "move away" as he was making her more than a little uncomfortable with both his words and physical advances. The owner assured her that 14 was "not too young". He finally did move on, but I must wonder what would be "too young". At this point our server assured us that she would try to keep him away, but that he was drunk. The owners wife also happened to be in the restaurant and assured us that her husband meant well. Unfortunately, our server also said that this happens all too often. Because this is not an isolated event I felt the need to write this review so that others would know. After another five minutes of relative peace, the owner returned for the third time and offered the terrified 14 year-old a "present" because that would make everything all right. When he finally left again, we could still hear him loudly swearing in both English and French. That was quite enough. I put a substantial tip in our servers hand as she had done her very best. I hope that someday she can work in a more respectful restaurant. We never saw any of the wonderful plates we had ordered and I will always be curious what vegetarian delights the chief was able to prepare. I feel very sorry for the owners wife, but she also tries to defend his behavior. I understand well the difference in culture between France and the US. I know that 14 was the legal drinking age in France when we were there a few years back. However, when a child tells an adult to "move away", that means move away in any country. And having the owner sexually assaulting a child and swearing like a french sailor is not my idea of a pleasant restaurant experience. It is too bad that after a week in wonderful Kansas City, my brother and his childs most lasting memory will be a drunk pedophile that happens to own a french restaurant.

I dined here recently as part of Kansas City Restaurant Week. This was my first time dining at Le Fou Frog. I had a reservation and was seated quickly after showing up on time. The restaurant is very quaint, both inside and out. I actually enjoyed the cramped interior, as it offered a very intimate setting for you to interact with your party and other dining parties if you so chose to. The waiter did an excellent job of answering a couple of questions about the menu. He was very knowledgeable and affable. The entire staff did an excellent job of collaborating to keep glasses refilled and the courses delivered at appropriate times. For an appetizer I had the Moules Marseillaise (mussels in a spicy tomato vermouth broth). The mussels were cooked correctly and the broth was flavorful without the spice being too overpowering. The warm bread served was great with the remaining broth. I also had a chance to try the Moules Marinieres (mussels in a white wine cream broth) and it was equally great. For the main course I had the quail stuffed with brioche and foie gras sauce perigourdine, which is something that I dont believe is on the regular menu. The quail was excellent, but the star of the dish was the sauce perigourdine. My compliments to the chef. Fianlly, for dessert I had the chausson aux pommes et poire (similar to an apple turnover). It was very good, but not quite on the level of the first two courses. I had a chance to try the mousse au chocolat and I much preferred the mousse. It was not overly decadent and the consistency was spot on. To cap it off, the best chocolate truffle that I have ever consumed was served at the end. This may sound like hyperbole, but I assure you, it is not. I cant believe that I have lived in Kansas City for 8+ years and never previously visited Le Fou Frog, but I plan to make up for lost time by visiting this jewel of a restaurant on a regular basis.

We decided to take our first trip to Le Fou Frog and make it our "Last dinner out for a while" as we were only a few days away from my delivery date of our son. As it was a Friday night, we decided to call ahead for a reservation. We over estimated the time it would take to get there and ended up there an hour early. They werent yet busy and were able to seat us right away. After sitting there for maybe 10 minutes, another waiter stopped by and noticed that no server had been by to take our order yet. He apologized profusely and a server was promptly sent over. She was very friendly, apologized, took our order, and offered us a complimentary dessert for us having to wait. The food was FANTASTIC! I ordered the lobster bisque and my husband ordered the coquilles st jacques for an appetizer (delicious!). I had lobster tails on a bed of risotto, and my husband had sea bass on a bed of risotto also. The risotto was the best Ive ever had and I have been dreaming about it since. My husbands sea bass was to die for with a perfectly crispy crust on top. My lobster was great but after trying his sea bass, I immediately wished I had ordered it instead! We ended up taking our complimentary dessert to go as we were both stuffed from dinner. The portions didnt look like much when they brought it out, but we barely fit the last bite in. It is definitely pricey. 2 appetizers, 2 dinners, and 1 alcoholic drink (that nearly knocked my husband on his back, and hes not a light weight drinker either) and our bill came to $105. This is for sure a special occasion dinner place!

My wife and I read all the great reviews of the place and wondered why we had never gone there. After a surprise anniversary dinner there we found out why we will NEVER EVER go back. Ambiance: Great if you want to sit in someone elses lap and have the "too cool for everyone" art crowd drown out your quiet conversation. Food: A joke. Now I love french food. Escargot, bouillebase(sp?), etc. But the stew was like a watered down cambells tomato soup with a bunch of empty crab shells. No flavor at all. My wife got as she calls it "chicken with brown sauce". Terrible. I asked the guy next to us(he might as well have been at our table) if he liked his chocolate boar stew. He replied it was the worst thing he had ever eaten. Service: Spacy. Aloof. Non-existant. I could have killed for a water refill or even for some to get spilled on me so I could get the foul tastes out of my mouth. Price: Astronomical. I was ready to drop some dough for dinner but for these prices and what we got.....only a fool could think its a deal. We look back and laugh now because it was soooo bad. It is our joke suggestion when thinking of a place to eat. Save your stomach, save your money, do not waste your time. Go to Cafe Trio and have a real dinner.
