If this place is run by the same people as Prime, see below for visit to Prime. They should be ashamed. Prime visit receives Zero Stars. Easily the worst experience at a restaurant in DM in fifteen years. Tried for days to get reservations, all phone calls and emails went unanswered, and no way online to reserve. Decided to go anyways because we wanted to try somewhere new. Went on a Wednesday night for a birthday dinner at 5:45pm, zero people there during their happy hour. Asked for a scotch, they had zero to offer me. My wife ordered a martini from the menu, they didnt have the ingredients (vodka) to make it. The bartender just laughed each time, he said they were sort of "low" on lots of items. After telling him the issues with even getting communication from the place, he shrugged. We walked out and decided to go to Proof downtown, had a wonderful three hour dinner, one of the best in a long time. I will never visit this restaurant or any run by this ownership group again. We will stick to places like Proof, Centro, ROCA, Flemings, ETC.

Baru is an event unto itself. Dont expect to come here for a quick bite before the show. This is a place to linger and savor a meal with friends, a slow food establishment of the best sort. The food is exceptional, as is the service. The chefs 4 or 6 course tasting menu is a marvelous adventure every time (honestly it is the only thing Ive ever had), definitely make the time to enjoy it. The servers seem to love what they do, and are eager with explanations and recommendations. It been a little over a year since I first visited Baru, and there are still many familiar faces on the staff, I take that as a very good sign. The only down side is the wine list, while larger than average, it is very traditional and very expensive. I recommend you bring your own bottles and take advantage of the corking service. You simply will NOT find a six course menu of this caliber for $70 in any other city in the US, an amazing treasure in little old Des Moines.

Decided to eat here for my spouses birthday celebration with another couple. Decided to do the 4 course all table menu. Total bill was over $175.00 per person with the food and wine. While the food was all very good, the service was extremely slow--waiting up to 30 minutes between two entree courses. With the last course, one of our dining friends didnt even want to eat it by this time (we talked him into taking it home with him). What also bothered us was the fact that our waiter never once came over to apologize for the slow service. It took us almost 3 hours to eat 4 courses. They didnt compensate us for the wait until we brought it up to the manager. While some people may like to linger at dinner, we had dessert waiting for us at home. By the time we got home, it was late and no one really wanted to eat the dessert I had made.

One of the best restaurants in Des Moines. My fiancé and I love to explore new restaurants, especially beings hes a chef. This was truly a great experience for our anniversary. The atmosphere was elegant and peaceful. Our server Allie was beyond wonderful, one of the friendliest most informed servers I have ever had. The food was plated so pretty that you almost didnt want to eat it. We loved everything we ordered and had the pleasure of meeting the chef who owns it and the wife who runs the front. We also learned that their son does deserts. Knowing this is family owned and ran means a lot. We love supporting our locals. We cant wait to go back and have a new experience.

This is by far the best french restaurant in Des Moines and one of the overall top restaurants. My girlfriend had the quail and it was beautifully presented and delicious. I had the lamb loin and it was beautiful and perfectly cooked and delicious. My only complaint about the lamb was that I like a deep raunchy lamb taste when I eat lamb but thats a personal preference and not for everyone. This lamb tasted like a beef fillet with slight lmby taste. Foe grass was excellent. I like my foe grad so rich most people would only be able to take 1 bite and Id say this was half that level of richness but so good

I almost hesitate to post a review, because when people find out how great this place is, theres going to be a month-long wait for reservations. However, they deserve to be that successful! This place has wonderful food! Ate there last night and had 3 courses of perfection. Every course was beautifully plated--colorful and visually appealing. And the food tasted just as good as it looked. Service was stellar--attentive without hovering and plates cleared quickly without feeling rushed. We will definitely be going back to try more of this mouth-watering cuisine!

Absolutely fantastic food and amazing service. Probably tied for the fanciest place Ive ever eaten. have specialty dishes that change regularly and are very unique. The night I went, they had actually imported camel from Morocco and it was phenomenal. The final course was a perfect passionfruit cheesecake that was the perfect ending to the meal. I think I will actually have to go back and rate all the other places Ive been to a star lower to compensate for this place. That being said, you pay for what you get, so bring your credit card

Value, flavor, service and variety - this place has it all. Some consider it expensive and I did until I tried it. The $66 chefs choice 6 course tasting is way worth the money. With the amuse-bouche and other bonuses courses you get 9 different servings! Each has depth and flavor and is satisfying. While I could order things I think I would like - always get something I know I like with a bunch of new things every time I select the chefs choice. This is the best place to eat in all of Des Moines!

For a year my wife and I had been wanting to go to Baru 66. We finally brought ourselves there and with high expectations. We became very ill. We were both feeling it before we left the restaurant which was 3 hours later. It was the only meal we had together in two days...you tell me? It was either the escargot or the way under cooked creme Brule. I wanted to experience what Id read and been told about Baru 66. Our waitress was outstanding though

My wife and I decided to go "top drawer" for dinner last night, so we stopped at Baru. It was a slow Thursday night for the restaurant. We both ordered the 3 course dinner, which is priced reasonably for the quality you receive. The service and the food was outstanding. The wine was good, although quite expensive. Overall, a really enjoyable experience.

I have stayed here on many occasions and wish I could always stay longer. Wonderfully clean and nice staff. Sherry the bartender is magnificent. Excellent at conversation and really knows how to treat people to make them feel special. Drinks are good, strong, and made withg expertise. Great location to just about anywhere you want to go downtown
