I was a frequent customer with few complaints until last Sunday. On Sunday, I called in and placed an order. The hostess spoke to the chef and confirmed that the order would be ready for pick up in thirty minutes. Accordingly, I arrived thirty minutes later. Upon arrival, the hostess informed me that my order was being "processed." She did, however, ask for me to pay, which I did. She also told me she would bring me a water. Ten minutes passed, and I had not be given the water. I approached her podium and reminded her about the water. I also asked her for an update on my order. She said it was still being "processed" without actually checking. I returned to the waiting area. Another fifteen minutes passed, so I became impatient. I returned to the hostesss podium to inquire. She gave me the same response as before, so I asked her what "processed" actually meant. I was informed that it is their policy to bump take-out orders for those made by "customers." I asked her, "Am I not a customer? I have already paid for my food." She told me that she meant dine-in customers. I asked her if my order had been started. She said "no." I asked to speak to a manager, whom apparently was from the corporate office. He was very rude to me and seemed to be missing the point. He kept blaming the poor hostess, stating that she had misquoted the amount of time it would take. I told him that the issue was their policy of bumping take-out orders. He was unapologetic. In total, I waited 30 minutes in the restaurant. Moral of the story: Do not order take-out from this place. Management is rude and would rather blame their employees than take responsibility for their actions.

The manager is wonderful. Everything else was awful. It could be I just had a really inept waitress. I went on a Friday night for my birthday, and from the moment we sat down, it was just a terrible experience. It was ridiculously loud in there. The patrons had no respect for volume, which made talking to my guests impossible. The table next to us had 8 REALLY drunk people who kept shouting and throwing things and flailing their limbs about and smacking my guests. Ridiculous. The waitress was incredibly rude from the onset and never improved. We ordered maybe 6 rolls and a few nigiri orders. We got two appetizers and a noodle bowl of some variety. It took three hours for us to get our food. And our waitress NEVER explained the delay. We were not informed that the sushi would take a long time when we ordered it. It took her 2 hours to tell one of my guests that one of the fishes she had ordered was out of stock. Two hours. She was rude and noncommunicative, and we couldnt even fill in the time with conversation because it was too loud. We ended up getting half off the sushi because we talked to the manager about our experience. Hopefully he fired that waitress. She could have easily made the experience okay by simply warning us that sushi would take a while, and giving us updates. Oh, and to top it off, when the sushi finally arrived, it was soggy and warm. And way overpriced.

I enjoyed it the first time I went last year, however on my most recent trip I literally became violently ill within 30 of eating the ja ja men udon. I felt completely healthy all day and evening right up until after I ate dinner there. I must have stayed in the bathroom for about 20 minutes before I felt comfortable coming back to the table. I told the waitress about my "experience" and she seemed rather annoyed but said that she would let the kitchen know about it but didnt bother to let a manager know or have them stop by the table. Even thought multiple types of food poisoning can occur right after digestion....my waitress was clearly a medical expert as she offered this advice...."yeah I had it once in Italy and it usually takes a few hours before you can get poisoning. Im so sorry you got sick. I hope you feel better." Yeah me too. I would be feeling a lot better had a I not eaten there. I understand mistakes happen, and I wouldnt blame the restaurant as a whole for something like that. But for the waitress to assume that there must be something wrong with me and there couldnt POSSIBLY be anything wrong with MASUs food is unacceptable. If Im the manager of a restaurant I want to know if the customers are getting sick from our food....end of the story.

This restaurant is by far my favorite place to eat in NE Minneapolis. The first thing people should realize is that after about 6 pm (when Happy Hour is over on a side note) the place is more or less always packed and there is usually a wait. If you want to avoid loud and busy hours, then go for happy hour (2-6). Okay now to the full review. The place is decorated beautifully, but has a very approachable style that isnt stuffy. Dress is casual to dress casual. Their sushi is really wonderful and filled with fresh flavors, and the culinary experts that prepare it at the bar are completely happy to be transparent and answer questions if there is downtime (another reason I suggest happy hour, rather than late nights). We talked with several servers during our stay, but each was friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, and more than willing to answer questions and provide recommendations. Theres a lot of options for beer, sake, and other beverages. I recommend at least trying the bacon wrapped quail eggs and the shrimp sticky bun. Both are just incredibly fun to eat and offer a plethora of flavor. And finally, I didnt think it was possible, but their pork belly ramen is just incredible. There is a richness in flavor and texture that makes my mouth water.

My husband and I used to come here all the time when we lived in MN. The happy hour prices were a good deal and their sushi is delicious. We normally always sit at the sushi bar. There used to be an older gentleman that worked there, he was funny, charming and gave us wonderful service. We ordered six rolls that visit and he was astonished that we finished it so quickly. He made us some of his own specialty rolls for us to try because he saw how much we loved sushi. At the end of our meal, he gave us dessert. It was a fried green tea ball with some sort of sweet bean in the middle. Ive never had anything like it before and I cant ever get it again. Its not on the menu and Im sure it was his own specialty. Im lucky that he was kind enough to share it with us. Sometimes the happy hour can get crowded so its best to come early. Besides the sushi bar, there are several other bar tables. The pictures on the walls are beautifully taken of japanese women. The decor is cool, it has a trendy atmosphere. Ive never had problems with service at the sushi bar. We sat in the main eating area one time and the service was quite slow. I wish there was more of a variety in their happy hour menu. Its been the same things for along time.

I stopped by Masu by myself, for a night out. It was absolutely lovely from the start. Sunny, my server, was incredibly kind and attentive. Without encompassing that "Im-attentive-as-I-want-to-be." attitude. The food was superb. The Ikura, was spot on. Also, the Dynamite (pardon me, it might be named The Firecracker) Roll. Also, the Seaweed salad; had this spin on it that was so subliminally adequate. The Double Precious martini. So good! Like drinking a fresh garden......Yeah.....On that level. (P.S.....Im going compleeeetely off of memory, here. These names could be wrong and I do apologize for that.) Regardless, my point is that, overall, you should eat here. The decor is outstanding. Extensive/progressive menu. Cheery bartenders. Collective hostess. Like I said, you should eat here. All the time.. And you should absolutely request Sunny as your server! :)
