I think the ambiance, staff and environment is great! I guess I ordered the wrong thing today. I Ordered the Brussels sprouts and the Sweet Potato Agnolotti. The waitress swore by the Brussels sprouts so I got them. Ive had grilled/fried/baked Brussels sprouts in other places but this was the worst. They were well seasoned but the veggie itself was fried too long. The table next to me ordered them shortly after I did and we had a discussion about them. It turns out that the Brussels sprouts are Over-cooked on purpose for some reason!? Grey Ghost Detroits chef fries them FOR TOO LONG! There was a burnt aftertaste that almost ruined my agnolotti. The sweet potato agnolotti was beautiful! I thought it was a great idea and I want to try the recipe at home. It had a hint of Mascarpone cheese so I enjoyed it. I literally got 12 bite-sized ravioli like pockets. It was a large plate but small serving. There was too much oil in and on them that made my stomach upset (but that’s just me). I wanted to go vegetarian that day and it wasn’t a good idea. There meats, however, looked wonderful and decently portioned. There burgers, ribs and birds looked well-seasoned and worth the money. This is a restaurant that is NOT for the surrounding college campuses. It is a great development to the flourishing business district in Detroit. The prices range from $8 to $50. The average is around $23 for prices. It’s not bad pricing but just know you pay for what you get. If it’s cheaper you can bet it will be on the smaller side. I give this restaurant 3 stars just because the chef really likes to char the Brussels sprouts and it made my mouth have a Smokey taste in it. I would go back just to get their meat selections for sure!

I sat down & was served a glass of water & handed two beautiful wood hinged menus. After carefully reviewing the menu, I ordered a Hamms. Jump back 12hrs. I had breakfast at Dueseks in Chicago. Incredible beer list: Goose Island BC Stout, coffee stout & barleywine. Everything was amazing. Then 3 floyds. Two amazing hoppy beers. If I werent so full Id have ordered off their food menu. Duck confit dumplings...& everything was well priced. An hour later we pulled into Transient Artisan Ales in Bridgeman. Delicous. They had several variants of their stout: Buckley. So good. Hours lager we pulled into Schramms. Exquisite. Then Cellarmens. More amazing mead. Then Standby: delicious cocktails. A perfect day, so far. Time to look for a last round. Grey Ghost had a pretty sweet website. Everything looked great. My Hamms arrived. My friend ordered a Repeat Offender...aptly named. It had aloe & smelled like plastic...or soap. Tasted about the same. We ordered the octopus corn dog & the yellowish tuna under the raw section. The corn dog was solid & spicy. Really creative. The tuna however was swimming in spicy salty sauce. Unbalanced. Tuna is a beautiful fish. It should be accentuated, not drowned. I dont know...a disappointing end to a delicous day.

Traditionally I believe that reviews are best left to the professionals. My experience at Grey Ghost was so exceptional that I felt the need to voice my opinion. I am very pleased that Detroit now offers a genuine modern dining experience. Im sure the menu is ever changing so to write about any specific dishes isnt important here. I will say that every bite of food was EXTRAORDINARY. The dishes were creative and well matched to the others on the menu. The kitchen staff is extremely talented. I look forward to new and exciting dishes on my next visit. The level of service is unparalleled. The entire experience was spot on with one little hiccup which was promptly fixed. You will not find service this good anywhere else in the city and unlikely this good anywhere else in the United States. It is literally WORLD CLASS service. I left with the feeling that there was nothing else I could have reasonably asked for. Kudos and a standing ovation to the entire staff of Grey Ghost for providing a truly exceptional dining experience so very much needed by the great city of Detroit.

I am all for approachable food with simple fresh ingredients, however I felt that Grey Ghost fell short in every aspect. My first issue is the poor service. My husband and I ordered drinks, appetizers, a main meal and waited 20-30 minutes in between each for a waiter to show up to put in our next order. Why didnt we just put in our whole order at the same time? When I stopped a different server to bring up the fact that we had been there for 1.5 hours without ordering our main meal, he had an attitude. We started off with the sweet potato disassembled soup which was in fact delicious. The fried bologna was mediocre. One big problem I had was that the fish that I ordered and the steak that my husband ordered didnt come with any sides, just one heaping portion of protein that is unnecessary. I felt that my fish itself was cooked well, however the kungpow sauce tasted like it was from a local grocery store. We did order sides the cauliflower that were quite delicious. Overall it was a VERY expensive meal for mediocre food and bad service. I will not be back.

We had high hopes for Grey Ghost. We traveled from Orchard Lake for brunch. On a positive note, there is a very impressive bar selection and super creative cocktails. The place was packed and each table was diverse - showing the real Renaissance that is underway in the neighborhood. This being said, perhaps it was a bad Sunday for the kitchen, but the problems were many. More than once (along with other tables), we asked if the music could be turned down a notch or two. The response was, "its up to the chef". It is problematic when the waiters have to ask their guests to repeat themselves. We thought that at least the coffee cake (which was delicious) would arrive to hold us over. Over 35 minutes later it arrived. We received the quiche as another appetizer shortly thereafter and it was also delicious, but COLD. In short - decent food, amazing cocktails, but slow and somewhat unresponsive employees.

We went to the gray ghost on a Sunday following a performance at the Detroit Opera House. I strongly encourage you to make reservations. Although, we did not have reservations the hostess did her best to seat us initially at the counter and then as the table cleared to a more comfortable setting for our group of six. Three of us ordered the flank steak so clearly that was a winner. The pepper jelly Quail was delicious. The New York strip was tender and cooked to order. The pork schnitzel was mildly disappointing, but the puree served with it almost made up for what it lacked in flavor. Our group ordered the peanut butter and jelly sundae, the cranberry crumble pie, and their smores doughnut. I would easily go back for the smores doughnut. Our group also had ordered cocktails over the course of the meal and they were served well-balanced and full of flavor I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Great people! Interesting flavors. 4 of us enjoyed NY Strip, Scallops, Pork schnitzel and Pork Belly (really a deconstructed Reuben). Fried baloney appetizer, PB&J dessert and a very nice cabernet/merlot blend from Greece. Everyone on the staff, including the chef and bar tenders were both professional and pleasantly friendly. Couldve been hipster, but the people made us feel welcome. Eclectic menu, with great flavors. Brussel sprouts - best ever. Mushroom side - smokey, some good flavor, but texture not my favorite. This probably will be one of the Detroit restaurants we return to regularly for a great meal in a relaxing, friendly place. A fun evening.
